Qatar Airways to begin flights to Eritrea

In yet another move by Qatar Airways into underserved markets, the Doha-based airliner is preparing to start direct flights to Eritrea, according to Simon Teklesenbet, an official working with the Eritrean Embassy in Qatar.

Due to Eritrea's strategic location, Qatar Airways is also said to be interested in turning Asmara into a regional hub, according to an unverified reports circulating online.

Qatar is no stranger in Eritrea. Over the years, the country has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on villas, resorts, hotels, roads and renovation projects in the Red Sea State.

With nearly 110,000 tourists visiting Eritrea annually, the country is increasingly seen as a profitable market by regional airliners.

Similarly, Turkish Airlines, which recently sent its first resident ambassador to Asmara, has also said it will start flights to Eritrea by the first quarter of 2014.

  1. Turkish and Qatar airliners will be competing against Luftansa Airlines, Eritrean Airlines, Massawa Airways, NasAir Eritrea Airways and Egyptian Airways. This will mean cheaper prices for the consumers.

  3. If 5* Qatar airways set a base in Asmara which is a shrewd business, that would be the end for Ethiopian Airlines. So far the latter managed to remaine profitable by the virue of Zero competetion.

  6. Qatar Airways provide really good service. Lufthansa will finally be forced to reduce its prices or it will be pushed out of the Eritrean market.
