Pictures of Development Projects in Eritrea

The following images showcases some of the less talked about development projects in Eritrea of late. Keep in mind, there are more projects underway, but due to lack of information, we have to wait a while before we hear or see images of them.

Newly built library at the Eritrean Institute of Technology in Mai Nefhi. Four laboratories and a master plan campus are also being/going to be constructed as part of an expansion project for the school. Another similar project is also underway at the Hamelmallo Agricultural College in Hamellamo that will feature new laboratories, lecture hall and office complex buildings as part of its expansion.

A high school worth of around 35 million Nakfa has been inaugurated in Sembel district of Asmara on 26 April. According to Mesfun Mehari, from the office of infrastructure in the region, the school has 48 class rooms, 4 laboratory rooms, 3 computers rooms, a meeting hall, library and teachers’ office, and can accommodate 5,000 students.

A mobile tower has been built in the Mai-Aini sub-zone of Eritrea. The citizens of the region now have access to mobile coverage. Hopefully, this is a sign the government is ending its outdated policy of limiting mobile subscriptions to its citizens for shortsighted reasons. Studies show increase in mobile subscribers have higher impact on business productivity and GDP per capita in countries with low levels of penetration levels. For instance, if Eritrea were to increase mobile subscriptions by just 10% (38,000 more), the average yearly growth of GDP per capita would be 1.4 percentage points higher.

A new hotel worth 15 million Nakfa was inaugurated in Debarwa in early April. The hotel, which is owned by  Petros Gebresilassie, resident of Saudi Arabia, comprises 10 well-furnished rooms, a restaurant serving both foreign and traditional cuisines, cafeteria, hall and others. It has also created job opportunities for 20 nationals with 10 morepotential posts in the future, according to Mr. Tesfom Gebreyesus, hotel manager.

Construction of a cold store near the town of Alebu is 60% complete, according to the Ministry of Information disclosed. When completed, the cold store will have the capacity to stockpile around 2,000 tones of agricultural products such as fish, meat and vegetables. Plans to construct similar projects in Massawa and Adi-Guaedad are slated for the near future, the ministry reported.

  2. Cry cry my beloved nation..it is sad after 20 years we are talking about 2 plus story hotel and a library as millstone development strides...
I wonder why eritreans are leaving the country in droves!

  3. This is just the tip of the iceberg of Eritrea's progress, a progress that continues in spite of the various efforts to derail it. Despite all the obstacles in its way Eritrea continues to progress and develop. The absence of ships carrying food aid in the ports of Eritrea is one of the great testaments of the progress of Eritrea.

  4. I agree with you Yacob. It is uncountable it is all over the country starting from individual, family and community based micro and macro developments which includes in all sector development.
I am not an economists, but I know my country very well from west to east from south to north, and I appreciate all progress have been and still on track.

  7. this is you call development???? what kind lucky gov of Eritrea. when I see the development in Tigray it is significant you can see 3 universty a capacity of above 50,000 student attend that means 2 time the capacity of Sawa but this is Universty not militery camp like Sawa and above 40 college and 300 MW Tekeze hydro power, 120 MW Asheguda wind power electricity this means 4 times the total capacity Eritrea. With all this the people of Tigray not happy with their gov, they are openly criticism the government but in Eritrea...............................

    ReplyDelete
  8. Perhaps the people of Tigray are more astute than you and know that what you refer to, is nothing more than a pie in the sky, a myth fabricated by those with a vested interest. You pride yourself in having Tekeze but suffer electricity shortages. Have you stopped and considered what the 50000 university students will do once they finish their sub standard education? We believe in quality and not quantity. Your nation is one that peddles the double digit growth fairytale and at the same time raises its begging bowl to catch the scarps thrown to it.

  9. Dear Madote,
It's about time to let know this ill wisher that this Eritrean site run by true Eritreans. I don't think that's fair to your regular visitors to put up with his bs on every topic. He needs to be checked from demonize the people of Eritrea and spreading his psychological war on Eritrean's site.

  10. Aye sami. This is the crux of the matter. First of all, U blood sucking vampires are supposed to work for the WHOLE of Ethiopia and the ethiopian people and not only for your miserable killil and qomalat people. Secondly, everything U´ve built comes from aid money which Eritrea rejects. So let´s sum this up:
Eritrea builds for the whole population and country without aid money and U build ONLY for yoiur killil with aid money and U´re to tell me, that´s a better model?

    ReplyDelete
  11. things are relative as you say there is a shortage of electricity but imagine during durg time only 5MW diesel generator in Tigray but now 420 MW hydro and wind power with small amount of running cost but in Eritrea during derg time there is 60 MW diesel generator and now 120 MW diesel generator with high running cost. when we look education it is true there is low quality but during derg time there is no college lets alone university but in Eritrea is different.

  13. If you are happy about things in Tigray good for you. This is an Eritrean forum for Eritreans to discuss Eritrean issues . I personally could not care less if the streets of Tigray or Ethiopia were paved with Gold. Eritrea marches on, regardless of the obstacles put in its way, achieving real tangible goals for the betterment of Eritreans.

  14. Hi Sami why do you want to compare yourself with Eritrea.I have been to Tigray recently and there is nothing there except the usual dusty roads and prostitution. You call this development?Dinkem alech demekech!!!!and yet most of the Tigrians who resides in Addis and other Ethiopian cities construct the buildings but they don't have any intention to come to Mekele and live.No body.why because there is nothing in Tigray. So don't dare to compare yourself with Eritrea and its people.I am not Eritrean but that is the truth.

Look when I thing about tergaru before they are poor and illiterate than as but after I cross to Tigray it is different the people of Eritrea is much poorer, illiterate than Tegaru and I feel sorry for my country so lets face the truth. if it continue like this finally we are going their servant. by deny the truth you can not change any thing.

I am really discouraged when I hear such criticism from our people. Comparing us with whom, why? This leads to envying. Bad habit! If we try to be competent that is what is needed. For everything there is cause and effect. We have to ask what is the root cause and we can minimize our short comings.

Guest, you can't handle different opinion? we must remember this is an open forum, all are given equal space, differences of opinion are part of freedom of speech. I know freedom of speech is not in your dictionary even though you live in a land of freedom of speech. Not a single day I ever wished ill to Eritrea, but I show sympathy to the oppressed toward my people who are suffering in endless national service, suffering in Ethiopian refugee camps, Sinai desert, Libya ans so on. Someone should be soulless not to have sympathy. I have seen the harsh life in Eritrea when I visited the country last year. I don't blame the people who want to get out and try to live the comfortable life you are living. If you were on their shoe, I'm sure you would not say what you are saying now.

    Peace brother!

  19. Go and stay in Tgray then. We are happy with our hardgained sovereign state and its development brick by brick by the brains and sweat of landsmen unlike Tgray who snatch handouts from here and there and flash with big empty institutions like the "International" Mekele Airport with NO passengers:)

Who cares about the bloody Tgray afterall.

You and Where is Z Cruise learn from this discussions or make your move to Tgray if that is pleasant for you guys. One lazy criticer less, is better for Mama ERITREA !

Why? yes as one Eritrean I want my country is in better position than any other country in the world, But what I wish and what happen very different. Look what Madote tell as about Eritrea development and compered with what going on in Tigray take one example there is one project Welikayit sugar factory it have a capacity of 480,000 tone per year. to build this factory it needs more than $600m and they borrow this money from China. why like this project not happen in our beloved country? we have the man power, land(Gash barka is better than Welikayit area). why?

Then I would like you to tell me what is development? After that, I would like you to tell me in what sector have we developed? The past 10 years I have been to Eritrea 3 time. The last time was a year ago. As far as I can witness, things are getting worse every day in terms of everything.
So please tell me where is the development.

Few words taken from the letter written by Bishops Mengsteab Tesfamariam of Asmara, Tomas Osman of Barentu, Kidane Yeabio of Keren and Feqremariam Hagos of Segeneiti.

    - the country iss "desolate" because so many people had fled or were in prison or the
    - "There is no reason to search for a country of honey if you are in one."
    - There was no-one left to look after the elderly.
    - "all those who are arrested should first be handled humanely and sympathetically" and then be presented to court for trial.

This is what I call facing danger without fear.
I am very proud of these Bishops. It is about time someone with guts stand up for his people.
    GOD BLESS YOU!

  33. Eritrea has exhibited one of the fastest economic growth and poverty reduction in the world. Several factors underpinned these improvements-First pragmatic leadership. Second a wide reaching network of infrastructure that enables efficient and effective implementation of economic reform policies. Third equitable land reform with targeted investment in agriculture brought significant increases in agriculture yields and poverty reduction in rural areas. Eritrea has been able to sustain this progress for the last 23 years, thanks to the effective adoption of self-reliance.

As things were better during the dergue or after dergue, well for those sacker Eritreans it was a wonderfull life but for true Eritrean it was a hellish experience, where our livleyhood was oblitrated by your friends in the south of our border.

Blaming others but ourselves has become the norm in Eritrea. Blaming Agame, CIA, UN, AU and others for our own failure is dirty politics invented by DIA. As to smugglers, indeed time will tell. The government of Eritrea is doing the right thing by asking for an investigation at the UN level, but you have to understand that we, our country Eritrea, is so low in the diplomacy world no one wants to listen to what we have to say.

  52. Good point for a change, and really nice you quated the Mhret. With no modern equipment, the italians built you say is the only visible construction in Eritrea. Good, one it tells you it was built by Eritrean manpower, not caterpiller, and two it was built in a short period of time, so the Mhret, you might not understand but is telling you, in no time Eritrea will build all that Eritrea needs. PIA said something about a "white elephant" and this too might skip you but take your time.

  53. Forto Sawa, most of our grandfathers passed away, our fathers are close to retirement age or in retirement. Hmmm who is left in Eritrea today?? You and i know the answer to that. Over 3000 young people are on the run every month and do the simple math to figure out how many have abandoned the country the past 10 years. The next question is why are those people running??
The next next question is why have you run? Why are you living in western country?
Forto Sawa please cut that shit! I see every day many HGDEF supporters smuggles their brothers and relatives out of Eritrea.
If people have decent living condition in their country (I am talking about Eritreans), they wouldn't run away. The second Eritrea is run under constitution where every one is equal under the law, I will pack my bags and move there. I am confident I am able to do a lot of things there.

  57. You are right the old are dying and those that are old and retired are sitting ideal, and the 3000 a month was indeed revised after the opportunist realized a 1000 a day for the past twelve years in a row will put those leaving Eritrea way out number that are In Eritrea, that is out of a ~5mil Eritreans ~3mil would have left, so though they realized they were not talking about Ethiopia with 90+mil people. Doing the math will leave us with only 500000 and some so by your own logic there is indeed no need for those question you are raising.

    ReplyDelete
  58. ̈Doing the math will leave us with only 500000̈
    ONLY??????
Well let me break it down for you. Lets say 0,5% of those 500,000 were in medical fields, and by doing the simple math, 2500 in medical fields have abandoned the country.
Again let’s say another 1% out the 500,000 in technical and engineering fields left the country, and that means 5000 people in technical field have left the country. The list could go on. Even if the farmers leave the country, it is a big impact to the economical and stability of the country. It takes years to produce a doctor or engineer. So now tell me who is going to build the country if you don’t have human capital. The root cause of all of these is there is no rule of law, justice, constitution, freedom to live under constitution…..

    ReplyDelete
  59. Where its glaring lights have blinded you, otherwise its a legit question in context. By the way the 500000+ i mentioned above are armed and capable, that is EDF, if you catch my drift. As far as living in the west is concerned why long to leave it? Aren't you content and enjoying a constitutionally operated system? Why go to a place that lacks it? If you ask me its a contradiction, just as the system you defend and advocate for, which is founded and perpetuated by exploiting the poor and the disadvantaged. Eritrea refused to accept the norm and knows its riches both in resources and human capital. So learn from can do people, y'KaAlo will move a mountain if it obstracts his view. 76. if this is a joke it is ok, but development projects shown are very miniscule and not really considered development projects by today's standards, a hotel in dibarwa you must be joking....it is laughable..

  77. Yacob do not forget that people like fihira work in the parking lots and they say they are doctors or engeeners when they go back home. The Lexus that fihira talks about is a car that is always parked in the parking lot where he works. By seeing it a lot he convinced him self that he owns it. Poor dreamer.
