Eritrea has the fastest growing economy for 2011 - Economist

UPDATED ON 12-16-2010
It was originally reported here that Eritrea was predicted to have the 3rd fastest growing economy for 2011 by the Economist, however, this report was slightly inaccurate and we deeply regret our errors. According to the Economist 2011 report, Eritrea is to have the World's fastest growing economy in 2011 and not the 3rd fastest. All sources have been updated.

Eritrea predicted to have the World's fastest growing economy for 2011

According to the Economist, Eritrea will have the World's fastest growing economy in 2011. In "The World in 2011" publication, the Economist states Eritrea will have a 17% economic growth, which will largely come from its lucrative mining boom. The report also highlighted Eritrea will open a newly constructed cement factory in 2011. To view the entire list of the Top 10 fastest growing economies, visit here.

Editors note: While Eritrea's economy is largely being backed by mineral and a strong agriculture sector, and both Qatar and Ghana's economies are being backed largely by oil and gas, it raises questions about Ethiopia's overall statistics. Many credible analysis have stated Ethiopia's double-digit growth figures are being cooked up by the Ethiopian regime for domestic political consumption. For example, the highly credible Financial Times reported a few months ago that Ethiopia's double-digit growth claims of recent years is being supported by "dubious statistics" and these same fabricated figures are "bandied around by development experts".

In Ethiopia, the same is almost true but with a disturbing caveat. It is an open secret that the double-digit growth of recent years is supported by dubious statistics. Yet the same figures are bandied around by development experts arguing that a trade-off between growth and civil liberties is inevitable.
Financial Times, August 9 2010, by William Wallis

Just a few months ago, the prestiges Oxford University, in collaboration with the United Nations, published the top 10 poorest countries in the world, and their findings contradicted the Ethiopian government's claims of double-digit growth. Their findings show as of 2010, Ethiopia is the 2nd poorest country on Earth (UN/OU). According to the report, 90% of Ethiopians are living In Poverty, 39% of them are Living on at least $1.25 a day and 61.5% deprived of adequate schooling (UN/OU).

  1. Wow. You can't even accept good news about Eritrea without bashing Ethiopia. Yall are the most pathetic people on Earth, it's sad but true.

Ethiopia's economical growth is supported by all international economy hubs. The growth is due to a growing investment in the agricultural industry, as well as a rapidly growing service sector. Ethiopia also started at a very low point, so this growth is expected to carry on for a while.

Eritrea's new found wealth could be a blessing or a curse, depends on how "Eritrea's DERG regime" decides to use it.

  2. This is FANTASTIC News! Let's hope that the economic growth is sustained for many years to come!

  3. This report must have been written by a dump economist who lacks the ability to understand and interpret economic facts. How wld u contradict with ur self; on the one hand accepting what the Economist reports and on the other hand claiming this fact is not true for Ethiopia.

  5. There's no doubt that Eritrea's economy is booming thanks in large part to it's massive amounts of Gold deposits and heavy investments throughout the country.

Ethiopia's economy on the other hand is for the most part, fictional. Much of Ethiopia's economy relies on aid and remnants from the diaspora, both of which consist of 7 billion dollars in total annually.

I see the Ethiopians are butt-hurt about Eritrea's progress. It's expected of you clowns to think Eritrea's economy is not going to progress with all the gold, minerals, fisheries, and small manufacturing goods Eritrea produces. Keep bluffing about your economy, its your people who will pay for it at the end.

  7. Pathetic.. just pathetic! why do you have go so low. Couldn't you just report Eritrea's economic progress and let go of Ethiopia...its not our concern what happens in Ethiopia and what they do with their economic figures...

  8. If we are able to do all things by ourselves we may not need assistance or learn better ways from others. But we shall never be able to do all things with no assistance.Even the great countries with highest economic powers.First let us know and understand who we are and our capacity then search the better ways for development...also we need to think for the next generation. No one can clap in one hand.Let us catch hand to hand crate peace and love then work hard and bring changes to our nation and people like others do.If we talk should work to achieve our goals.

  13. I don't understand why are all these Ethiopian folks hate about Eritrean economical growth. Not even 10%, much more will happen soon in Eritrean economy. It's not even hard to imagine that Eritrea will grow economically with all the natural resource and hard work people that it has.The most exciting thing is that the growth is not with aid from any international like other countrs, it's just from hard working and dedications. So for these people who really like to hear good news abour Eritrea this is the time, and i am 100 % we will see much more very soon , and for these peope who hate about Eritrea development and growth, Go and KILL urselves.

  14. It is a good news for Ertiria. But i don't understand why the eritrians hate ethiopia so much. Ethiopia economy has been growing more than 10 % for the last 7 years. And it will continue to do so. Just to go around addis and other cities is enough to see what is happening in ethiopia. Do the eritirians know that we are building express way from addis to nazerate, rail way around ethipia (2000 km) . Please be positive and try to change ur country, leave ethiopia alone.

  15. its a good news that eritrea's economy will grow fast in the next year but i didn't understand most of the contents in this article, becouse it talks more about ethiopia being poor and on a lowest economic growth.please lets be reasonable for what we talk about, anyway whoevere wrote this artcle, fuck yourself for your dumest thought ever.

  16. I DONT GET IT!! If the article is about the growing economys of the world, then why are some of you complaining about the facts written about Ethiopia. If The Economist is saying that Ethiopias economy is reportedly growing with this and this much BUT the The Financial Times are at the same time stating that the dubbel-digit growth as of recent years has been supported by "dubious facts" in Ethiopias case...then how can you choose to only believe in the "good news" WHEN THEY HAVE EQUALLY CREDIBLE SOURCES?! Dont you think it's relevant to the topic at hand to atleast mention that much?! You make it seem as though the the writer of this article is making this stuff up him/ herself, did you not think for one second that maybe, just maybe there might be something to the story when both the Financial times findings and Oxford University's findings go hand in hand with eachother?!. Please use your heads before you start attacking someone, its very childish..and this is coming from an 18 year old eritrean.

  17. Ertria and ethiopia are both the poorest countries in the world. No doubt about it. But, I beleive ethiopia is in the right way to reduce poverty and improve the lives of the people. Some of the facts are:- this year 3 new cement factories will start production, we are undertaking massive expanssion on the energy sector, like Gilgel Gibe 3.... This and other facts shows that the GDP in Ethiopia is growing. NO Doubt about it. Actually it will take many more years of hard work to allievate people out of poverty. At least the country in the right WAY.
This is the first time Ertria has been mentioned to grow with double digit. If it is true, it is a good start. But, the question is what are they going to do with it? I am sure Issaiyas will buy more guns and aircratfs that spending it to reduce poverty. If the new found wealth is not managed properly, it might been a cures that a blessing.

  18. What do you mean "if it is true" that Eritrea is growing. It is Ethiopia, not Eritrea who is being accused of having fake growth. Besides if Ethiopia is heading in the right direction, could you please explain to me why your economy has had dubbel digit growth for the last couple of years but you are still the second poorest country as of 2010?!..Not even Eritrea is that poor and like you said it yourself, we havent even had dubbel digit growth before and still it is Ethiopia who finds itself being listed as the second poorest country on earth..so please do explain, I would genuinly like to hear it. Either way I am happy for both countrys as long as the money are invested carefully and wisely for the benifit of our people.

  19. Funny Anonymous December 22, 2010 12:21 AM! Ethiopia is in the right path but you ain't sure about whether Eritrea(yeah this is the proper way of spelling my country) double digit growth is true or not. Don't you think you are using double standards here?
Let me enlighten you with a couple of things about my country:
1)President Isaias Afwerki(again this is how you spell the president of my country) might be a lot of things but he is not stupid by a long shot. What do you think he is doing with all the manpower that he has? Do you honestly think that he is keeping all this manpower doing nothing for 10 years? If VOA has reported during the withdrawal of Eritrean forces from Tsorona that the amount of hard work that went to the trenches were enormous, what do you think he could do with more than 300,000 young people withing a period of 10 years?
2)You are sure that President Isaias will buy more guns and aircrafts than(that's right not that)reducing poverty.
Hmmmm!!! May I ask how you are sure about this? Do you know him better than Eritreans like me who were/are in Eritrea? How could you make such assertions when it is clear that Eritrea has now an embargo that prohibits the government of Eritrea from buying any kind of weapons? (I seriously doubt you even follow the current affairs let along being sure about the President of a country whom you know very little about).
(3)Here is the "sad" but true reality of Eritrea. We might not have the most democratic government in the world, but if push comes to shove, we will pick it 1000 times over than any other government that you guys have. At the very least, our government doesn't shoot us arbitrarily like you guys used to do and wish you could do again.
    (4) As much as you are sure about the path of Ethiopia is right, I guarantee you that Eritrean progress that is mentioned here is not at the very least surprising to me. You know why. Because I was there when it was all happening. The building of roads, building of dams, building of water breaks on every conceivable hill, helping farmers on weeding with there farms ... It was only a matter of time before this hard work starts to show up.

FYI, currently the government of Eritrea is putting all its might on Education. So don't be surprised if you see the number of educated Eritreans going through the roof in 5 to 10 years!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Funny Anonymous December 22, 2010 12:21 AM ! You seem like a bright person but
    1) You "know" what ISAIAS if going to do with the "new found" wealth? I am rather intrigued by this statement. May I ask how? Could your "knowledge" be based on the stereotype that you got from the media? If so, do you think it is reliable?(hint: the last time you guys knew about what Eritrean people want, we had to go through 30 years of war to tell you that over 99% of us disagree).
2)You are sure that Isaias is going to buy guns and aircrafts.
Are you sure about that? Isn't Eritrea under arms embargo? Do you even follow on the current affairs?
3)I also sense your skepticism about the double digit that Eritrea has scored.
I wonder why? If you are sure Ethiopia is on the right path, then it stands to reason that the prediction of the study is not that far off reality. FYI, I wasn't even impressed with what Eritrea has got.(But again I know what goes on in there as I came to the west not more than a year ago).
Dude, you should be able to differentiate between propaganda and reality. I think it is about time for you to know that presence/lack of democracy doesn't dictate the economic achievement of a country.

Let me start why ethiopia is still the poorest country while growing double digit in the last couple of years:-
    1. Ethiopian economy start from a very low point
    2. The population of ethiopia is more than 80 million. In which 85 % are small scale farmers.
So, in order to see dramatic change in the people income, the country needs to grow with double digit for more than 20 years. But there is still some changes , let me give u example. The per capital income of ethiopia befor 6 years was 120 dollars, this figure grows to 320 dollars in 2009( Check BBC country profile to confirm). I agree that, we are still the poorest country in the world, even if the pci grows to 320. That is why i said, we r in the right path but need to work very hard to be miidle income country in the next 10 years.
Let me give you one more example:- Ethiopia is the 5th largest economy in sub saharan African in 2009 with 35 billion dollar GDP(according to the world bank). This doesn't mean that the counrty is rich. When you divide the GDP with the population, you still find a small figure (that is the per capital income).
Bottom Line:- It is good for the region as well as Africa if ethiopia , eritrea, sudan, Somalia..... manage to grow their economy. It will open more opportunity for every country to do bussines with each other. Most of all the people in this deeply troubled region will be benefited. This has to be the goal, liffting the people out of poverty. I am ethiopian, who have many eritrean friend here in addis. I am happy to hear all the good news about eritrea. Wish you good luck and a Happy new year

  22. I dont buy your explanation, if Ethiopia really did grow by 10% or more every year for the last couple of years and that money was spent on infrastructure, schools and healthcare like in Eritrea they would definitively not be the 2 poorest country on earth today. If Ethiopia really were heading in the right direction, then you would have spent your money on these things. Even though Ethiopia is a very big country with a very big population, your country was not destroyed like Eritrea was from the war. Eritrea started from a much lower point than Ethiopia (economically) after the war. Still Eritrea repaired itself without outside help and continue to grow by herself. If Ethiopia really did grow so much all these years, and you were "heading in the right direction" why havent you built schools and healthcenters all over Ethiopia, why are you instead of getting a healthier and stronger population, recieving more and more aid as if things are getting worse. You say that 85% of ethiopians are small scale farmers, yet Ethiopia has done relativelly very little to update its methods concerning agriculture so to make it more efficient so Ethiopia can feed its own people. Today Ethiopia recieve more aid than any other country, wich I honestly think would be the main reason for why your economy is supposedly growing. If Ethiopia is heading in the right direction then you should need less aid, not more aid. From what I have heard you have really great land, were it is very easy to grow just about anything, yet you have bigger food shortage problems than Eritrea. I could go on forever but I just cant believe that Ethiopias regime cares about ALL of the people of ethiopia when they have becomed so depandent on the US that they even went in to Somalia for them, risking thousands of Ethiopian lifes. It just doesnt make sense. A country that is heading in the right direction shouldnt still have people starving to death after over 7 years of dubbel digit growth.

  24. WHY IS ETHIOPIA EVEN MENTIONED IN THIS ARTICLE??? What kind of obsession is this?? As the 1st commenter said, you people really are the most pathetic people on earth. You can't even accept good news about Eritrea without bashing Ethiopia. And you talk about Ethiopia being poor like you guys are are the richest nation in the world. Yeah I'm sure the 2.6 million eritreans dependent on food aid dont mind going hungry cause you're doing the more important job; sit on the computer and bash ethiopia instead of helping your own people who are in desperate need. Oh I'm sure they'll be soo proud of you!

There is no other explanation for this except for a deep-rooted inferiority complex that drives you to compare yourself with Ethiopia in every occasion to feel like you're good enough. But you'll never be satisfied so you do it for the rest of your life. How sad.

  25. @Anonymous, December 23, 2010 1:54 PM I understand that u are wacthing only eritrean media, that is why u have a biased info about ethiopia. Let me give some facts based on ur questions
    1. Before 10 years we used to have 2 universities (Addis Ababa Uni And Alemaya University), now we have 23 universities and 10 more are under construction.
    2. in 2010 around 90 % of ethiopians have access to primary schools.
    3. We have been building roads around ethiopia. This year we start a brand new express way from addis to nazeret.
    4. Before 3 years ago we used to produce 700 MW electric power only. In 2009 we are producing 2000 MW. Now we are builiding GG 3 Power station which have a capacity to produce 1800 MW alone. All this shows we are in the right way.

I just mention few of the development we are doing. Those are facts, in which you, the financial times or the Economist megazine can not change it.

I had been trying to help u to have a better information about ethiopia. Try to gather information from different sources and have a better understanding. By the way 2/3 rd of eritreans are under UN humaniterian aid. What does it mean for you?

That is the problems with u, u guys love to talk bad thing about ethiopia without solving ur oum problems.

  26. Wow, the anger...Bashing Ethiopia?! I guess in a sense you are right, but at the same time, I do feel as if what was written about your country was true. I apolagize if I made you feel as if I hate Ethiopia or ethiopians. Let me clearify that I do not in any way hate you nor am I trying to make Ethiopias achievements seem smaller than what they are. Clearly this is a very sensitive subject for you. If you were trying to help me get a better view of Ethiopa, then thank you, ironically I was trying to do the same thing. Ethiopias government to me is a criminal one led by the US and from what I understand, it only caters to a small portion of the Ethiopian people. Now, why do I write this?! So that you will understand where I was coming from when I was "bashing Ethiopia" like you said. I was just trying to point out facts that contradicts to the statement you made about Ethiopia heading in the right direction, since I dont beleive it is. I simply dont believe it is possible when the interests of the US comes before the interests of the people of Ethiopia whenever Ethiopia has to make decions. I was trying to help you open your eyes..that was it. I do not want to get into an argument about it if it is going to make you angry. And btw, 2/3 of eritreans are not under humitarian aid. Please dont lie, or at least post a credible source. Finally I'd like to say that I hope that whatever growth that is reported to come about for both Eritrea and Ethiopia comes true in 2011, and that it is spent wisely. At the end of the day we cant choose our neighbours and we are better of helping eachother.

  27. the funny part is the economist doesn't write about ethiopia the way you read above. its edited. what the economist wrote is the ethiopian and eritrean economy are among the fastest economy in africa and world.
may be u should go and read what the economist wrote.

  28. wow...it is such heartbraking to see peoples from two pooorest country fight over expected growth rate. That is the exact reason africa is hundred years behind. I am ethiopian. I am happy to hear the good news for both my country as well as Eritrea. Why do you hate? The growth of one doesnt hurt the other. Many of you around here doesnt seem to understand what 10% growth mean. It doesnt mean this countries will get out of poverty next year. It takes many years of such sustained growth...even to make it to middle income country. Rather than hating, lets wish the best eachother. Lets make our region a better place for the generation to come.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I read what the economist wrote, and it was not them who wrote about Ethiopias growth being fake, it was the Financial Times..maybe you are the one who ought to go back and read the article again. And we were not "fighting" about expected growth, we were merely discussing it. It was your fellow Ethiopian here who got so angry about it that I asked him to just leave it alone. And yes, I agree on the fact that not being able to discuss our different opinions without getting angry and fighting is a big reason for why africa is behind today. So hopefully, next time around he wont be so quick to attack someone when they do not agree with him. I said it before and I'll say it again, I wish the best for both countries but just because I dont agree with or think differently from you it does not automatically mean that I am "hating"..ok?!

  32. I hope both Ethiopia and Eritrea prosper. The beautiful people of that region have suffered for far too long! Shame on all those who sit in the comfort of their western homes and discuss the fate of their brothers and sisters in vain. I agree with the last person's comment. It's time to start raising together instead of tearing each other down. The Chinese, Indians, America...rest of the West don't care where the boundry lies (btw Ethiopia and Eritrea), just how they can get access to our land and natural resources...if you don't believe me look at the rest of east and central africa.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hahah you guys are ridiculous, have you read all of the comments - if not then I would advice you to do so before you begin to voice an opinion about what has been written. If you cant have a civil conversation - discussing different opinions - without telling people to "tame their fangs" or " shame on all those who sit in the comfort of their western homes and discuss the fate of their brothers and sisters in vain" .. then how will you possibly ever be able to learn from others. Why are you so afraid of an opinion thats not your own. And to the last person, if your so against freedom of speech then what the hell are you doing surfing the internet, and on top of that you even have the audacity to have an opinion aswell, even though you dont think such things should be allowed if you happen to live in the west, wich I bet you do..lol. And oh yeah, exactly what is it that we are not excepting about reality, I'm pretty sure no one has yet to claim Ethiopia or Eritrea to be a superpower in the comment section, so what exactly is it that we are not seeing about "reality".

    ReplyDelete
  34. Are you retarded? The "reality" is that people of the horn are destitute.Instead of working together to get out of their misery they
brag about how unique and blessed they are and ignore the humongous fact the truth is quite opposite to their claims.Pitful they are!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, the truth is that I am in fact retarded, so retarded that I really don't understand how you can call Eritrea and its people, wich is a part of "the horn" destitute when its just about the only country in the whole of africa that isnt so far up in debt to the west or any other part of the world that it has no chance of ever paying it back. And the part about not "working togheter to get out of misery" is just laughable in Eritreas case..seriously do you know nothing about her and her government. Eritrea is the very definition of success through teamwork. While the majority of africa is caught up serving the interests of the west while robbing their own people of their natural resources, education, healthcare ect ect, Eritrea is busy making its own path, where it serves its OWN people. I really could go on forever about this but I have a feeling that I'm talking to deaf ears in your case, you seem to have alot of resentment towards horners as a whole. If we are so pitiful I suggest you spend your time more wisely then surfing our websites, reading our news..it cant be very healthy with all that built up anger of yours.

  48. If you all could just give yourselves a 'time-out' session it would be wonderful. Do you really have any idea what it means to see one African nation on the list of a growing economy. Don't you have any sense of humanity to oppose or contradict when the poor gets prosperous. When your neighbor is getting rich, be assured that you will be influenced and will partake of its riches-if not directly then indirectly. You're so short sighted to be filled with the hatred inflicted by the nonsense politics. I am Eritrea, and even if it was Ethiopia which was on the top of the list, i would still be happy, because i am so sick and tired of hearing about the poverty of Africa. Your darkened heart is dragging you far behind. It's true that Eritrea and Ethiopia have fought for ages, but all these wars were not fair, the people of both nations don't deserve war. War is the enemy of human prosperity. If you are proud of being Eritrean because it's has got on the top of Ethiopia, then you must be foolish, and the same with Ethiopians. The few years we have enjoyed independence and peace, any Eritrean could go to ethiopia to fulfill his dream, and the same with Ethiopian. Why do you want to inherit the hatred to your kids, have you gained anything from that yourself? So whether Eritrea is scoring 17%, or Ethiopia, or somalia, you should really feel proud and positive, otherwise you are a narrow minded person brainwashed by the nonsense politics....wouldn't it be wonderful, me as an Eritrea, to think of going to Ethiopia or Ghana or any other country in Africa, because they have showed a tremendous prosperity. Please don't entertain a retarded thinking of any sort, think good things for yourself and for your neighbor. "love thy neighbor as yourself"

  57. Any one can say what ever he wants to say,but it's true what's stated on the article and i am witnessing what is happening about the economy ,because i am in side the economy. But i am a little bit not happy with what the article say about Ethiopia, the reason is just because i hate speaking about my neighbor's -ve while i am doing something +ve.And what i want to say is no matter what the Ethiopian economy looks like and,no matter what any outsider say's, about us or our country let's just keep doing what we are doing and what we have been doing. And the Ethiopians it's good for you if u r having a good economy right now,and it wold be best if it lasts long too.Because at the end of the day nobody can refuse the fact that having a good and strong economy in Eritrea ,Ethiopia,Sudan,Djibuti or even in Somalia it's for the good of the peoples of the horn of Africa. And changing the image and name of this region in terms of it's economy and politics.
