Western Woman Tells It Like It Is On Eritrea and Ethiopia

Eritrean miners having a lunch break at Bisha plant

By Linda Lynn Harris

Eritrea was never a part of Ethiopia; however it was illegally federated with Ethiopia in 1952 by the super powers during the end of the colonial era in Africa. Eritrea gained its Independence from Ethiopia after 30 years of war in 1991 and referendum conducted in 1993. Since independence Ethiopia has claimed a land that belongs to Eritrea in 1998 and a border war broke out between the two Countries. Both Countries agreed to go to arbitration and signed what is called “the Algiers agreement" in Algeria. The agreement would implement the delimitation and demarcation of the border through the establishment of the EEBC (the Eritrea-Ethiopia Border Commission) composed of lawyers selected by Ethiopia, Eritrea and one by the United Nations. The most important aspect of this agreement was that the decision of the EEBC would be final and binding. This agreement was guaranteed by the United States, United Kingdom, United Nations, and African Union among others. After the EEBC ruled in Eritrea's favor, Ethiopia in defiance of international law refused to accept the ruling and continues to occupy Eritrean sovereign land until today, 13 years after the decision of EEBC.

Since then Ethiopia has made several military attacks in different parts of Eritrea and Eritrea has retaliated. In response to the statement made on this page by a contributor to Seeking Alpha “Eritrea is now considered a state sponsor of terrorism" I want to clarify that there has not been any evidence of this statement or accusation. The monitoring Group which is mandated to investigate this issue has reported in their last report, the fact that after 5 years of investigation there is no information linking Eritrea to Terrorist in Somalia, in fact they informed Eritrea is a marginal player in Somalia.

The Sanctions were imposed in 2009, with the help of the United States specifically Ambassador Susan Rice (previous Per. Rep.of the U.S. to the United Nations). Ethiopia was able to have Sanctions imposed on Eritrea under the pretext of support for terrorism but the real reasons for sanctions was to deviate from the decision of the EEBC. This conspired action by Ethiopia and the U.S. has clearly been revealed on Wikileaks as well as the recently leaked communication from the Ethiopian Government to their diplomatic staff in different parts of the world.

Today Eritrea is the only truly peaceful Country in the horn of Africa and one of the few peaceful Countries in the region in general. It has a truly unified and harmonious society that identifies themselves as non-other than Eritreans despite the composition of the society which is 50% Christians and 50% Muslims and 9 different ethnicity.

The border war with Ethiopia has negatively impacted investments in Eritrea and hindered economic growth. However, while it has a long way to go in the area of economic development, Eritrea is a unique country that enjoys an independent economic policy, with investment and trade at the center of it's economic development plan.

Bisha mining has been a very successful project in Eritrea. Given Eritrea's high levels of natural resources, peaceful environment, its economic policy, and government's commitment to a corruption free environment, it has enormous potential in attracting large number of investors.

  1. Linda:
You have clearly summarized the status of Eritrea in a single page.
I will vote for you to be the first lady as the Secretary General of United Nations.
    Thank you.

  2. I would just add that: "Given Eritrea's high levels of natural resources, peaceful environment, its economic policy, and government's commitment to a corruption free environment, it has BECOME A TARGET OF ITS GREEN-EYED NEIGHBORS TO THE SOUTH!

  4. Thanks indeed Linda for your testimony, there is an old eritrean say: "Hasot endahader yefokes, Haqi endahadere yequlaeh"..False or lie fades over time until final disappearance, while Truth shines"
As then, still we hold the truth and by culture, we stand fair against all odds.

  5. Truth is not wanted in this world. The recent Human Rights Approach
reporters had tried to prove from 400 Eritreans refugees that there is
human rights abuse in Eritrea. I would advise our own Eritrean
citizens to follow her example and work for the betterment of their
people and think Rome is not built in one day and the Germans have eaten
their shoes in the past to build the present German. Our tolerance
would pay a price and in this case our Martyrs would not be deceived.

  7. Dear madote, what was the original title of the article?

  8. We told them “come and see us”.

They came, they saw, and the found the truth as clear and pure as the spring water. They came, they saw, and they found a can do people marching forward to the Promised Land unshaken by the barking of the toothless dogs. They came, they saw, and they found leaders who are still in trenches defending and building the “Promise” of SEWRA. You bet, the came, they saw and what they found out was Eritreans at “work”! Yes, they came; they saw, and found a nation and people rising from the ashes like Phoenix

What a contradiction, in the middle of region which is on fire, what they found out was country of peace, harmony, and unity. Here are countries all around Eritrea burning down to the ground due to wars and uprisings, and here is Eritrea as peaceful as “MEDRE-GHENET”,

Why all these good things about Eritrea? The answer is simple and as straight as an arrow. It is the people of Eritrea. Just take a look. If it is not the Eritrean toiling day and night to build his home; it is the Eritrean defending Eritrea politically, diplomatically, and militarily. If it not the Eritrean from within Eritrea defending the truth, it is the Eritreans in Diaspora, the Eritrean ambassadors, trashing the sworn enemies with such maturity, sophistication, and “can do” spirit. And that is why “truth” has prevailed for all see. Yes, the came, they saw, and they found the “truth” about Eritrea. As they say, you could never and ever bury to the truth.

Stay on course Deki Ere, and never get the toothless barking dogs from the streets of the West are still out there barking. Stay on course Deki Ere, and never forget the “hyena” is still out there waiting for you to doze off before he makes his move to kill.

By the way, if you see passing by, please call me SHAEBIA for it is a badge of honor I wear proudly.

    AWET NIHAFASH!

    LONG LIVE SHAEBIA!

    ETERNAL GLORY TO OUR MARTYRES!

GLORY TO THE BIGGER THAN LIFE ERITREANS WHO ARE STILL THERE BUILDING AND DEFENDING THE HALAL MERIET

  9. Finally, after almost 20 years we hear from a western lady Linda Lynn Harris the truth (but real truth) as black and white. God bless you Linda, this will be a lesson for those who suffer to create a new dream each and every single day. Mrs. Harris's report is a bitter pill for all enemies of ERITREA. Again ERITREA is the master of all challenges whatever the reason might be. LONG LIVE ERITREA.
    Thank you Linda

  10. If Eritrea is the perfect place as Ms. Harris has described in her article, why are Eritreans leaving the country by the thousands every month, risking their lives and organs to get out? Just because you scribe a long article in eloquent English arguing "the sky is pink" , it does not make or mean the sky is really pink. Wake up, people!!

  11. Linda wrote this as a response to a recent SeekingAlpha article in which they wrote lots of outrageously false and demeaning things about Eritrea.

  12. It is you that needs to wake up. If you want to REALLY know why are Eritreans leaving the country, READ the article again. I can see that you didn't understand it. I assume you are an honest person.

  13. Can the world take a look of this statistic? Where is ERITREA right now comparing other neighbouring countries? Who fulfilled in Africa the UN millennium goals at this point and time? Without any foreign aid Eritrea succeeded its programmes and goals. All Eritrea's enemies need to answer a lot of question. GOD BLESS ERITREA.

  14. Thank God we have people like you, Linda Lynn Harris

  15. Dear Linda,
I think your article should be written by Yemane Gebreab, the Friend of the Tyrant. All the words and content is exactly what he described about Eritrea. Your article started with flawed information that says'' Eritrea has never been part of Eritrea''. Historically Eritrea was part of Ethiopia before the Egyptian and Italians colonised Eritrea but Eritrea deserved to be independent by the UN and African Union Charter that says ''for the sake of Peace all African countries should respect colonial boundaries''. By this declaration Eritrea should get its independence from the British instead of federating with Ethiopia.
Secondly you praised the economic policy of Eritrea. Does the Eritrean Government has an economic policy? In Eritrea there is No any Policy document in ANY SECTOR (tourism, foreign affairs, agriculture etc .... they just work by trial and error and changing all the time. There is only directives that changed every time may be every three months.

You also praised that there is corruption free Environment for investment. Are you kidding me? WE do Not know the Finances of the country since independence. The people of Eritrea do Not know the budget of its own country and besides the people Do Not know the income from the Bisha mining company. Not only this all PFDJ companies has Never audited in the past 24 Years and even before independence. So how do You justify that Eritrea has a corruption free environment for investment. Eritrea do Not have enough investment from its own citizens or other investors because 1- No Constitution means No Guarantee 2- Corruption 3- No Clear investment policy at all.

One more thing - in the Algers agreement the two parties agreed that the EBBC ruling is final and binding However in the same agreement it also states that during the implementation if any issue arises it should be solved by Dialogue. So dialogue is Not Ruled out in the Algers Agreement. With regard to the links between GoE and Somalia Al Shabab group It was clear that GoE was more somali than the Somalis themselves and we witnessed the Islamist Union leaders were operating from Eritrea.. It was Not a Secret.

Therefore I advise you before you write an article like this this you need to have all the required information if you are Genuine blogger or otherwise you are paid by the Tyrant.
    Good Luck!!!
