The Coming Ethio-Egyptian War

With over 1,100 military aircrafts, Egypt has the largest and most sophisticated air force in Africa

The Coming Ethio-Egyptian War

By Bereket Kidane,

The unilateral action by Ethiopia to dam the Nile for hydropower generation and the adverse effects it will have on Egypt has been described by experts as anywhere from “causing significant damage to Egypt” to “potentially catastrophic.”

Anytime you play smart with nature and make changes to the landscape, it always has unintended negative consequences. It happens every time. Guaranteed!  At the very least, it never works out the way you imagined it. Leaving aside the merits of damming the Nile on the Ethiopian side, the net effect will be to reduce the waterflow to downstream states, namely Sudan and Egypt.

Can Egypt, which literally depends on the Nile for its life, live with the adverse effects of damming the Nile, which could literally threaten its survival?

When survival is at steak all bets are off. There are no rules when it comes to survival.

In 1979, Egypt’s former President Anwar Sadat had said, “The only matter that would take Egypt to war is water.”

Since the Fall of Hosni Mubarak’s government and the Arab Spring uprisings, Egypt has been engulfed in political turmoil and too distracted to deal with the threat from Ethiopia but once the construction of the dam is finished, Egypt will have to face the consequences of its reduced share of the Nile’s waters. Reduced water flow to Egypt will no doubt lead to water shortages and all kinds of political, social and economic instability.

The likely scenario is that Egypt will eventually have to send jets to bomb the dam rather than continue to live with chronic water shortages and social instability. According to emails obtained by Wikileaks, Mubarak had detailed plans to launch airstrikes from Sudan on any dams built by Ethiopia. For now, Egypt doesn’t have Sudan’s support since Sudan is now supporting the Renaissance Dam due to its internal vulnerabilities but the Sudanese are usually fickle allies when it comes to supporting one side or the other in a conflict and it is difficult to imagine them saying No to Arab and Muslim Egypt if Egypt needs their air bases.

Egypt’s political situation is stabilizing again with the takeover by the military and the military regime has been raising the ante lately. With the election of Abdel-Fatah el-Sisi, Mubarak’s plans might be dusted off the shelves and put to use. The military brass of el-Sisi knows full well that water shortages will lead to food shortages and  riots in Egyptian cities.  Egypt has no water source other than the Nile. It’s completely dependent on the Nile for all its needs.  Therefore, it  will do whatever it can to preclude social and economic instability stemming from water shortages, even if it means going to war. When it comes to survival there are no rules.

  1. We will poison the Nile if Egypt attacks Ethiopia.

  2. Then it is going to be the end of your Agame land

  3. Agame are soooo stupid. Ethiopians will get rid of woyane during election for this reason alone. All a game knows is how to start wars, how to lie and steal. Beggars can't lead.

    ReplyDelete
  4. As for the Sudanese, all you have to say to them is Muslims will be dying because Ethiopia decided to deny Egypt its historical right to the Nile and they will say, "Allah Akbar! Let's go get them."
But Bereket is right. This will threaten Egypt's survival. Future wars are expected to be fought over water not oil. This could be the first of the water wars.
I don't think Weyane's rag tag army is a match for Egypt's military. Egypt's military is built to fight Israel.

  5. One thing I've learned from visiting Eritrean and Ethiopian websites is how foul and disrespectful Ethiopians are.

First of all, you would need nuclear waste to do that, and I doubt you'll find a country willing to give you that. Secondly, if Ethiopia dares to do that, then Egypt has every right to destroy your country, and break it up into little states.

    ReplyDelete
  6. If Ethiopia completes this project, then Egypt will have no choice but to destroy this 5 billion dollar dam. Sooner than later, the Ethiopian government will come to find out this dam project will be the most expensive miscalculation it has ever made.

  7. What is this fascination Agames have with poison? It's like their weapon of choice. Agame women have killed Eritrean tegadelti by putting poision in their drinks. That was a despicable thing to do. These people have an unhealthy obsession with poison.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I believe poison has been a favorite method of assassination among Ethiopian elites for quite some time. It's a sign of cowardness if you ask me.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Nothing scares Weyane goons more than Egypt. Meles Zenawi's scam dam was the insurance policy to make sure his TPLF would be out of power after his terminal liver cancer put him in his box. To fight a country their own size is unthinkable and unfair for Ethiopian bigwigs, this is what scares them. At this point, it's not a matter of if Egypt will strike Ethiopia; it's a matter of when.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Wow, you're a typical Weyane loser.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Well, am with Egypt in this one cuz innocent people will die b/c of greedy Agame. and we all know Egypt is going to win if the water war started cuz we few Eritreans destroyed Ethiopian pathetic army what do you think Egypt the same size of Ethiopia will do to you Agametat. it will be the great catastrophe of woy'ane. bye Woyane may u all rest in pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  12. When somebody threatens your survival, you have no choice but to strike with everything you got.

  14. Egypt's army is built to fight Israel. It could destroy Ethiopia in a couple of days.

  15. Hey doomsayers, if you have any war of your own just do it. Ethiopia and Egypt will never go to any war. War can not solve any issues both countries might have. If, by accident, any war breaks though history will repeat itself. Egypt never won any war with Ethiopia. It lost every war with Ethiopia. This time will not be different. The difference is that any war Egypt might wage against Ethiopia will be critically detrimental for the very existence of Egypt. Egypt is at the mercy of Ethiopia already. That is why diplomacy is the only option for Egypt.
I have a question guys: Can some one tell me when was the last time the Egyptian army won any war? I can not remember one.

    ReplyDelete
  16. yup i know. it will be the end of woy'ane.

  30. God owns the universe, sky, water and earth. He gives to mankind for good stewardship. If rain falls on Ethiopia, it is for a reason. Thus, the people of Ethiopia are to use the water for good which includes feeding their citizens. God would also like Ethiopia to share their resources with neighbors. Yet, some neighbors feel that water belongs to them without rain...a very selfish idea. For many years, Egypt has taken a majority of water when Ethiopians have had starvation. Egypt did not help with the water or food as a good neighbor should...so you Askari people needs to stop ..nile is a gift for ethiopia not for ur sing-a-poor or egypt so just like we started ,we will finish it ..but I hate eartrians ,god plzzz destroy them plzz...Tplf 4ever ..

  47. You can't even have an intelligent discussion, can you? The question at hand is that how can one decides unilaterally to tamper with other's survival without their concent and agreement? Ethiopia (in this case woyane) cannot decide on its own to mess with the Nile (Egypt's life line) just because it feel like doing it. This is arrogance....

  49. Sudan will never side with Ethiopia in a conflict with Egypt. All this talk of 'we support the dam' is simply lip service. Sudanese people look down on Ethiopians. Just go to Khartoum to see how they treat Ethiopian maids, and Ethiopian migrants.

    ReplyDelete
  50. ... and when was the last time Ethiopia won at any war without the Eritreans or foreign help? please just one war? although i believe its the right of Ethiopia to build the dam and use as much even all the water that falls on her land, as i see it just like the other upstream countries its asset, and the fact that every time this water leaves these upstream nations its steals the wealth of the land. but lets get some points clear you have never fought or defeated the Egyptians in your whole history, it was in fact the Bahri Negash that stopped them from claiming up hill, it was as always the Northern Kings that kept hold of the Northern gates secure, in short i understand that everything Eritreans do is somehow Ethiopian to your people but it was as always the Eritrean who not only protected your Ethiopia but it was also the Eritrean who defeated them in war (although they did take some of our Northern and Western lands -also Eastern shores they managed under the ottomans) ... however based on your points though there is one different between the past and now, Eritrea might not protect you, so history might not repeat .... p.s. i do agree your master will most make you sit in a table and you most likely have to 'sell' a large part of Ethiopian land (they would probably ask for the Amhara land and i know you would love to give them but most likely Somalia Ethiopia or Southern Ethiopia will be Egyptian territory - if they could get over their racist Arab nature but if not they would have a ready made baria

    ReplyDelete
  51. Jacob, the Mahdi's armies was under the Egyptians command (Sudan was under Egypt colony) when they defeated your emperor (Yohannes ), beheaded him and to this day his head is in the Museum of Khartoum Sudan.

  52. Try to avoid war at any cost; our problem with Ethiopia needs a political solution. All this talk and sympathy for Egypt on this form is nonsense; it is simply looking for another country to do the dirt work for us. When there are so much that we can discuss on our own internal issue why waste time wishing and hopping war to take place between countries.......As President Isayas has said it once " it is what we do inside Eritrean is what would change the Country" in long term when all this ill feelings gone forever the dam would benefit all people around the horn including Eritrea.

    ReplyDelete
  53. milli vanilli you are right and i personally will like to see the dam completed, would it benefit us or not is not my interest, let the be dam founded, no pun.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I don't know if the author has a war on the ground experience but from his repeated opinions he seems he has seen war on movies only and movies tell fictitious war where bullets don't hit the main actor. But living this aside, if you are politically savvy, don't you know that war between Ethiopia and Egypt will never happen, not because of the geographic location which will limit the war to be only with capable air force which is not convenient to either of them with the technology of the anti air missiles that are around the world but because these two countries are allies by proxy.

Enough dreaming and please wake up. Wake up and find your solution yourself without dreaming that Egypy, DeMHit, ONLF or Ogaden comes to your rescue.

  58. Hello PFDJ supporters!

You guys are under-estimating the smartest homo-sapiens (woyane) in East-Africa.
How do you think they stayed in power for the last 20+years?
Have you heard of mathematical theorem called Map-Re-Drawing?
Please don’t Google it, unless you are woyane.
They created havoc in Ethiopia by re-drawing the map of every province in Ethiopia. The plan against Egypt is simple; Extend the same theorem of re-drawing to the map of Africa! How will the Egyptian air-force find the new Gibe III Dam location in the new coordinate system of Africa?
Remember, Woyane are always marching one step back and two steps forward, although looking the other way.

    ReplyDelete
  59. kkkkkkkk it is funny No country want to war with Ethiopia. B/c Ethiopia knows all about war whereas Egypt knows war only in theory. that is why they don't think about war.
IT IS THE WISH OF ERITRENS!!!!!!!
If you want we can destroy asmara airport or presidential palace or any part of Eritrea land. You saw the evidence in 1998-2000 war.

  66. Oh man,
your history knowledge is almost null. The Mahdist movement was a Sudanese movement against the British led Egyptian and British forces in Sudan. It was not under any form of an Egyptian command. In fact, one reason for the Mahdist Sudanese to invade Gondar was because Emperor Yohannes helped a British led Egypto-British army encircled by the Mahdis around Kassala by giving it an exit corridor.
One more thing: The Ethiopians led by Emperor Yohannes had a clear upper hand against the Mahdis. The had managed to chase them from the city of Gondar and other areas to Gallabat( Metemma Yohannes town) in a matter of days. Ironically, Emperor Yohannes was killed by insiders. He was shot from behind by some agents of Minilik and Italians. Minilik and the Italians worked hand and glove to remove Emperor Yohannes. Remember that Yohannes was fighting against the Italians around Massawa at the same time.

  80. Indeed, both nations have a true cause worth of defending, but their dispute can be rationally resolved through diplomatic solutions, if both sides & other concerned parties to the conflict are utmost committed in order to keep their vital interest well alive & long lasting i.e in the true spirit of selflesness, mutality & cooperation. As for me War is very unlikely between Egypt & Ethiopia in any ways....since both apparently will have too much to lose from the endless war rather than any sustainable meaningfull gains at the end of the day except apossiblilty of temporary victory by either side in the aftermath.
    Peace to Africa!!!

  103. The picture on the article is misleading just as the article is. For instance the B-1 Lancer is only operated by the United States Air Force. Even Israel or other European Nations don't have one. So that but now days that is what I have come to expect from Madote's satire page.
Second, it is so sad to see you guys all getting giddy at the thought of Ethiopia waging war with Egypt. It is a fantasy that will never be. Sorry to bust your bubble. Please pay your 2%.

  104. i'm sorry maybe we live in a different world but the last time i checked in this world life is not fare. in regard to your example of oil rich countries, it just shows my point every oil rich country chooses who to do business with and who not to, even some time stopping the flow of oil just because they could regardless of its consequence (e.g. 1970s & 80s oil crisis), it is their proactive to do as they wish, i'm sorry again but its not a fair world. p.s. did not understand 1st part.... maybe if you have not already you should go and visit the Gash-Barka zone of Eritrea and tell me how you felt seeing all that rich brown water leaving Eritrea (although we have water shortage ourselves) so that these Arabs could look down on Africans and somehow view us as if we exist to serve them ... no that my water and if it was up to me i'll stop ever drop of water leaving my land (they could have my left overs thought)

  105. if you are claiming to be one of the opposition groups. i'm going to tell you about the opposition groups they have hands with the human traffickers. i know that because me and my sister went to libia to cross to eropa but the horror we saw was so bad. the traffickers they beat you they take your food water they do every bad things in the evil book to make you miserable, and the dessert the sea it was hell on earth. when me and my sister get to erop my sis went to swiz and i went to england then i met a lot good people here. but the thing that made me very angry is when guy frm this opposition group came to me and said join our group. i was angry at that guy i almost cried, i said where were you when we were in sudan or in libya dying. but when we entered to erop you try to play a saint. this opposition groups they only want power and wealth me am not with anyone but this so colled group they are selfish at list sawa make a man out of as. my sitster she is gud now thax to god. and to all who cares some of this traffickers are.\||\\\\ seifu wadie anseba, katro wadie 4asmera, wadie isake akrya gezawtu mefeletta hanti aienu zfeseset hanti agru hankas, butsue amlak and medhane wadie teseney kaa halafieom. aziome kulom hade chanfer eyom. and fsh blenay ms rafee zbhal amharay. aziome kltieom kaa bhade yserhu and this guy name abdel rezek he work alone. this kind of people and the opposition groups are responsible for the suffering and death of our people.

  112. Hey agame boy,
I know you will feel proud to marry an eritrean, that will make you feel equal with people who are superior than yourself. But That's not how we feel marring your kind.we think it's a disgrace and down right shame to mix with your race .

    ReplyDelete
  113. Noway ! I know tgray people because Im dooed to live side by side with them. As of your logics you mean the closer neighbor is your good friend. But not necessarily, because the worst enemy attack his closest neighbors before he goes far to attack the others. Thats what woyane did to the people at Zoba Debub, they killed our people, ruined our mosques and churches, stolen our animals and now they are smuggling our young to their camps to make the refugee flow grow in numbers for their interest and we also have daily information how they are taking care the refugees. We know lots of them rooten in Mai Aini, Indabaguna in their graves. These people are born posinous!

    ReplyDelete
  116. The thing that shocked me about this opposition groups is they know so much because they have hand in all the bad things that happening to us.their mind only have a heart for the money not for human beings. i know this guy here his with this opposition groups, his name is berhe they call him melhas he said shaebia put a hit on medhane (wadie teseney) not to kill him but to capture him, he said shaebia wanted him so bad because he have a strong linked with the opposition groups in italy and specially in america. he was calling him anbesa or like his the man for getting away frm shaebia. but then he said shaebia cant capture him in america so they are going to take him out for good if they find him because they cant get him back frm america and take him back to Eritrea because his protected by the US government. and then he talked about how he is linked with the death of the lampedusa tragedy and the missing boat with 70 t0 78 people to cross italy. he said shaebia wanted to capture medhane alive so badly and show him on tv with all his secrets so everyone can see him but they didnt get their wish. but when he knows his all assets got captured in sudan he got a way. his in america now but his other assets in egypt got killed even thou his asset had a protcion by the US in egypt. he said shaebia murdered him he says. you can see this frm his action that this melhas his with the opposition for the money. he said shaebia murderd this guy. if someone is innocent i call it murder but killing a bad guy is justified. if shaebia killed him good. that berhe melhas guy was praising medhane like some kind of a hero and he said his doing good for the youth. he called him the smartes guy alive. he praise this killer the killer of our Eritrean people. if you hope death and cheers for evil and for other people to die. death will come to you. like what goes around comes around. the thing am telling you this is, this berhe melhas was tgraway born and grew up in teseney, eritrea,he have deep hatred not just to shaebia also towords the people. so he got what he deserved. he got in to a fight in a bar here in london he was stabbed in the face and abdomen he got paralyzed frm the knife wound by this guy called gash his frm barentu his name is samsom he is in prison sentenced to 5 years. so my advice to you all is don't get into argument with anyone out side of this website please. because some people got hurted beyond repair by their loved one loses they cant control their action so be careful, because you never know who's listening.and remember in the end we are all Eritreans. and our enemies they are laughing at us while we killed each other. bye all and God bless and sorry for the bad words about before.

  120. Guest (Asmareno) gotcha "himak keyari shim". You seem to mis understand me. My point is i did not said Adi kuala or guara is agame land but people leaving on the border are intermarried with each other, so Alec who claimed to be from Adi Kuala and Areza is most probably get Tigraway in his gene.
Btw ain't Meles Zenawi from Adi Kuala.

    ReplyDelete
  121. so what you are saying is,e.g- if i have a baby frm a japanese woman does that mean all the gurae people have a japanese gene. as the children of adam and eve and as african i would say we are the same race i would say yes. but you trying to pin that the agame are the same with Eritreans. it just tells you want to make us Eritreans close to your family tree. its just a shame. your tgrawnet is showing. i am really sorry you are just barking on the wrong tree. And why do you call me himak keyari shim? when i try to send you the message to you i send it to erena by mistake and when i delete it my name changed but the message remained. i've nothing to hide mate. but you seemed to be angry by that message. is it because the tgraway got stabbed and paralyzed by that brave wadie Eritrea. your tgrawnet is showing. your the one hmak your spitting bullshit you just want to pin it so badly. what a wast of time you are. childish behaviour you are annoying person. bye dont wait a reply frm me.

  122. I love tigray . Egyptians have already learned to know " who Ethiopians are" they have lost not less than three wars with Ethiopia. Egyptians get scared when they rear the word "ETHIOPIA."let alone coming to war, they don't even turn their face towards Ethiopia on the issue of abay.

    ReplyDelete
  123. what are you saying guys, eritrea & tigray are inseparable faces of a single coin. eritreans means tigrians . even though they are no longer together, the two are the same. i didn't expect such misunderstanding of facts form you. any way it is your worst president, issayas who tried to figure a false impression on your mind on agroundless situation about eritrea & tigray. do yo know this fact.....a lot of eritreans are in tigray & a lot of tigrians also in eritrea .so the two are surprisingly the same . but i'm so sad about those who try to mislead the relation of eritrea & tigray. no matter how hostile eritreans are with ethiopia, the relatoin ship of eritrea & tigray is undeniable. please impregnate your mind the real story of the two.reunion of eritrea & ethiopia will be inevitable in the future after the death of the dictator , essayas afewerki who is holding back eritrea instead of progress. read the following ........eritreans = tigrians

FYI, the whole African continent it behind Ethiopia on this one..Egypt, let alone to start war, it can't even afford diplomatic war against Ethiopia now. Eat your hearts out PFDJ and keep MIKIDAM to Egyptians who call you ABED (slaves) !

  126. My dear, I don't believe you know the meaning of "guts", any how...., Egypt will not waste time fighting pathetic empovrished Ethiopia. Rather it will just unleash one Tomahawk Missile to pulverize the so called "Millennium Dam". That's all. Case closed !!!!

we have no qualms with Ethiopia or Ethiopians but you, we know that you are no friend of ours nor are you Ethiopians. As to the rest we are waiting what to.call them, their preferance of course,

    ReplyDelete
  130. No single country in africa can defeat ethiopia. ethiopians defeated us in the war 1998-2000. In 1993 we defeated the dergue. but we must be careful not to think that derg AND ETHIOPIA ARE NOT THE SAME. y the way, Ethiopians always defeated eqypt. in 1982 weyanes helps to defeat derg,.
