Eritrea: 18th Bi-Weekly Newsletter Released

President Isaias Undertook a Working Visit to Egypt


President Isaias Afwerki conducted a working visit to Egypt from 08-10 September 2014. The visit which was held at the invitation of President Abdulfatah Al-Sisi aimed at enhancing the existing bilateral ties and partnership between the two countries.

During the visit, the two Presidents held in-depth discussions on ways and means of reinforcing to the highest level the existing ties between Eritrea and Egypt in economic, social, political and diplomatic domains.

Moreover, they reached understanding to increase the exchange of trade and investment between the two countries and exchanged views on the contributions of Eritrea and Egypt in regional and international fora.

Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and Mr. Yemane Ghebreab, Head of Political Affairs of the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) were part of the delegation.


President Isaias Held Talks With Japanese Delegation 

On 15 September 2014, President Isaias Afwerki received and held talks with a Japanese Government delegation headed by Mr. Minoru Kiuchi, State Minister for Foreign Affairs.

After delivering a message from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Mr. Minoru Kiuchi commended Eritrea’s cooperation with his country in international affairs, and expressed conviction that Eritrea would support Japan’s endeavors to secure a seat in the UN Security Council.

President Isaias indicated that Eritrean-Japanese cooperation in the domains of education and vocational training, as well as in different sectors connected with private investment need to be accompanied with concrete steps.

In connection with Japan’s bid to join the UN Security Council, President Isaias underlined that Tokyo should play constructive role in the UN Security Council in line with its influence.

The two sides also agreed to promote constructive engagement in various domains.


Eritrea Participated in the Emergency Meeting of the AU Executive Council on the Ebola Epidemic

An Eritrean Delegation led by H.E. Ambassador Araya Desta, PR of the State Eritrea to the AU and UNECA, participated in the Emergency Meeting of the Executive Council of the African Union on the Ebola Epidemic, held in Addis Ababa on 08 September 2014.

The Meeting expressed solidarity with the countries affected by the epidemic, and renewed the pledge to extend the necessary support for the countries to tackle the current problem and to find a long-term solution to the epidemic. National Leather Value Chain Strategy Launched 

The Ministry of Trade and Industry of Eritrea launched the National Leather Value Chain Strategy which was devised in cooperation with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the Eritrean Leather and Allied Industries Association.

Speaking at the launching ceremony held on 13 September, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture, indicated the significant role that hides and skins as well as related products can play in enhancing the nation’s export revenues.

Dr. Mwinyikione Mwinyihija, Executive Director of the COMESA Leather and Leather Products Institute, on his part elaborated on the efforts that the Institute is exerting towards attainment of the goal.

The Chairman of the Eritrean Leather and Allied Industries Association commended the encouragement that the Government is extending to promote the development of the industrial leather and allied products sector.


Eritrean Finance Minister Visited Sudan’s Currency Printing Press

Eritrean Finance Minister, Mr. Berhane Habtemariam, visited the Sudanese Currency Printing  Press (SCPP) in Khartoum. 

The Deputy Manager of SCCP and the heads of departments briefed the Minister on the work  carried out by the SCCP.
