The Curse of Having Tigray as a neighbor

The Curse of Having Tigray as a neighbor

By Bereket Kidane,

In Deuteronomy 27:17, the holy bible tells us “Cursed is he who moves his neighbor’s boundary stone.” To say having Tigray as a neighbor has been nothing but a curse to Eritrea is an understatement.  It is enough to make you ask God, “What did we ever do to deserve a neighboring enemy like that?”

It was Tigray’s attempt to push its boundaries north into Eritrea that has been the cause of all of the complications Eritrea has experienced in the last 15 years. This week marked the 12th anniversary of the signing of the Algiers Peace Agreement. The current leaders of Ethiopia who hail from Tigray, in whose name an expansionist war was fought to cure an inferiority complex, show no sign of leaving sovereign Eritrean territory. But it doesn’t stop there.

If one considers the opportunity cost alone that has been lost to Eritrea and the region over the last 15 years is incalculable. The fact that Tigrayan leaders were willing to risk it all and gamble everything the Ethiopian State had as long as it meant that they could take Eritrea down with them is a very telling sign of the depth of the inferiority complex that they are afflicted with.

Having failed to militarily dismantle Eritrean sovereignty, they now seem to be pursuing a long-term stealth agenda that is aimed at reversing Eritrean sovereignty. It is hard not to notice how Tigray seems to be co-opting Eritrean culture and symbols wholesale in the hopes of deliberately blurring the differences and staying close enough to the Eritrean heartbeat until the day Eritrea is weakened enough through sanctions that Tigray can walk-in and have its way with Eritrea.

If it were possible to change your geography, Eritreans would do it in a heartbeat. How nice would it be to trade Tigray for another Sudan that deals with its neighbors in good faith and doesn’t suffer from inferiority complex?

Tigray is the bane of our existence! God put a curse south of our border.

  3. Thank you Bereket for writing about this important issue. One day, TPDM/Demhit will transform Tigray into a good neighbor, and the inferiority complex TPLF leaders place on the minds of its followers will be a thing of the past.

  4. July 9, 2013 — Ethiopian opposition sources in Eritrea have provided Durame.com with exclusive pictures of the Tigray Peoples Democratic Movement (TPDM), a democracy group that is widely regarded as having the largest number of rebel fighters in the region.

Established in 2001, TPDM was founded by the late Fiseha Hailemariam Tedla, who was a senior Ethiopian official before defecting to Eritrea. He was the chairman of the group until 2008, when he was assassinated by a lone gunman paid by the Ethiopian regime.

After the demise of their founder, the group elected Molla Asgedom as their new chairmen. Under his rule, TPDM has flourished, going from a rag-tag rebel group numbering in the few hundreds, to highly trained and formidable fighting force numbering in the tens of thousands.

According to US embassy sources, "the group strictly guards its leaders' names for fear of reprisals against their families in Tigray.....the TPDM does not recruit recently escaped Ethiopian Tigray soldiers in Eritrea, but rather recruits disgruntled Tigray youth from within Ethiopian Tigray."

With over 4,000 Ethiopian refugees entering Eritrea each month, TPDM's membership has increased significantly. When asked about the number of fighters in their group, opposition officials declined to specify exact figures but did state it was over "tens of thousands of fighters".

In late 2012, TPDM formed an alliance with five democracy groups: the Amhara Democratic Force Movement, Ethiopian People's Patriotic Front, Gambella People's Liberation Movement, Benishangul People's Liberation Movement, and Ethiopian People's Justice and Equality Front.

  7. I would normally blame God for it, but today is Good Friday.
Let us hope one day Allah/God will re-program them to be good neighbors.
Otherwise, it is going to be a long wait for plate tectonics that is going to create the east coast of Africa. When that happens, let hope they will be an island by them selves.
Happy Easter to all, including woyanes :)

  8. bereket, your writing just a shame. One can not be a tigrigna Eritrean without having a tigray root. Have you read a single hostory book in your life. Stop your nationalistic mumbo jumbo and read history to know the fact without tigray you have no identity at all. By the way I am an Eritrean who feel blessed to have tigrayans and ethiopia as my kins and neighbour.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Why should we train another rebel group from Tigray only to come back and bite us in the ass later on? Isn't that what we did TPLF?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Is there anything we can do to make plate tectonics happen? I think there is stuff you can do to cause earthquakes. May be we can start fracking? Fracking supposedly causes earthquakes. Something to think about. That may be the only way in the interim to separate ourselves from a terrible neighbor like Tigray until the continental drift happens.

    ReplyDelete
  11. We're not against Tigrayan people; just their regime. This is an important distinction we should be clear on. Yes, many Tigrayans have some issues such as Tigrayan elite's inferiority complex towards Eritreans. But I think these issues are a direct manifestation from decades of poor governance.

Today, under TPLF's watch, Tigray has been turned into an African version of Afghanistan, where village loyalties supersede their own ethnic and country identities. Many of the Tigrayan fighters who fought for the betterment of Tigrayans during their struggle are now either refugees in a neighboring country or homeless in Ethiopia. All the development money that should have been spent on developing Tigray, is now being siphoned up by TPLF bigwigs in Addis Ababa on lavish homes. This is why tens of thousands of Tigrayan youths are flooding into Eritrea to join TPDM/Demhit.

So we should avoid alinating Tigrayans who want to change the status quo. Many Tigrayans know it's against their interest to be on a war footing with Eritrea because it's their Tigrayan economy that suffers the most, while TPLF bigwigs live it up in Addis Ababa, completely detached from the harsh realities of the common Tigrayan living in Tigray.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I disagree! There is no difference between Weyane and the average Tigrayan. Very little difference when it comes to Eritrea!. They all have this grand illusion of "Greater Tigray." That is at the source of their problems with Eritreans. When was the last time you saw Tigrayans protesting in favor of demarcation and against the occupation of sovereign Eritrean territory? Can you tell me when and where they have done that?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I am glad Eritrea is GONE!!
we can not live together under any circumstances!
we have been doing much better with out you guys.
The past 12 years has been the best for Ethiopia.
BTW i encourage anyone to read this:

Eritrea and Ethiopia: Beyond the Impasse
    http://www.chathamhouse.org/publications/papers/view/198954

Ethiopia needs NO LONGER Eritrean ports!! how sweet it that?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Please be rational. We need to think not only of the past but also of the future. In the first place, we should not confuse the mistakes leaders make with the will of the people. More often than not, there is a big difference between the two. As far as I am concerned, the people of Eritrea and those of Tigray in particular and the Ethiopian people in general are strategic allies.

You talk about inferiority complex. I am not sure how much you know about the subject. I am sorry to be slightly impolite without my wish. But, at the moment, it is not the people of Tigray who are suffering from inferiority complex but unfortunately those of Eritrea. There is a simple explanation for this. The pride of the Eritrean people that was once as high as Mt. Everest has been demolished by the wrong policies of Esayas Afeworki and his self-serving cabal. There is scientific evidence to suggest that Esayas has been blinded by the psychological condition of narcissism - in which a person thinks only of his/her own self interest regardless of the consequences to others.

Therefore, your blame of Tigray for the lamentable woes of the Eritrean people is largely misplaced. We should not let Esayas Afeworki escape Scotch free. Otherwise, there is no hope. He is the chief architect of our misery, and he should be accountable and dealt with accordingly.

Blaming the Tigray people is a red herring - and a diversionary tactic from the main culprit - who is clearly known to many by now, excluding those who are deliberately trying to obfuscate and hide the truth. .

    ReplyDelete
  15. I respectfully disagree too. Since the late '80s, Weyane has been hijacked by corrupt bandits who have put their interests above their neighbors and their own citizens in Tigray. No sane Tigrayan would hold animosity with its most important economic link (Eritrea). But that's what TPLF bigwigs did. As a result, Tigray has been turned into a failed state within a larger failed state (Ethiopia).

If this wasn't true, then how can you explain why Tigrayans represent the highest percentage of people fleeing not just from Ethiopia but from the Horn of Africa? Hundreds of thousands of Tigrayans have fled to Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Djibouti, Somalia, Europe, America and Australia. These people are fed up with the status quo. They are fed up with watching their leaders use aid money that should be going to Tigrayan people but often ends up in Chinese banks of a few TPLF elites.

In a little over a decade, TPDM/Demhit is now considered the largest rebel group in Africa. The bottom line is Tigrayans have been protesting with their feet and their AK-47s. So get used to hearing the name Mola Asgedom (TPDM Leader), because he will be the new leader of Ethiopia if TPLF leaders continue to neglect and abuse Tigrayan peoples' suffering.

  18. "Scientific evidence?"! How was that done? Ethiopian underestimation of Eritrean ability to analyze and understand never seems to end! You think you are going to have us side with you by using "scientific evidence?"

Issaias Afworki is a far sighted, selfless leader of whom some reasonable Ethiopians have intimated to me that they wished their leaders were like him and his colleagues!

Talking about pathology, it is those who call themselves Eritrean opposition who are sick. No Eritrean collaborates with those who are working day and night to reverse their sovereignty and independence unless they are sick. No scientific blah blah, but a huge dose of logic!

While I have no means of knowing your nationality, I called you Ethiopian because you are furthering the Ethiopian leadership's hatred towards Eritrea and its leaders.

Why are our people immigrating to all directions?
Why is our country without constitution?
Why are we under one president for 20 years
Why are the people who gave us all they had are in prisone without trial
Do you know many people are in national service for over 10 years? (Do you know how it feel to see your friends, you left back home, still under national service for over 10 years?
Right now, Tigray is not my problem. My problem is the ruthless and cold blooded criminals who are leading Eritrea.

  52. Kidane, you have never understand the verdict if icc in holand, it is eritrea who invided ethiopia not ethiopia.
regarding the complex of of inferiority I think eritreans from kebessa like you have more complex of inferiority than Iigrians.
Eritreans servive like europeans on the poverty of Africans than in thier proper work. Look now how the europeans indificulty econommicaly than the other world they underestimated for years and years.
Eritreans underestimated ethiopians spescilly Tigrians, because they have complex of inferiority.
Eritreans has been colonised 60 years under the italians, they have nothing execcept Asmara, built for themslves not for Eritrean. Since you are selfish you are still proud of something you have never done. Ask all the doctors and engineers of eritrea where they studied, the answer is in Ethiopia thanks ur brothrr Haile Seladie, . You eritreans have been given more privillage from Haile Selsie thanall Tigrians, Gonderians, Afars, Somalians unfortunatlly you have never used it.
You kebessa people you are not intelligent and you lack wisdom , infact you are completly ignorants like you. I would like to give you one example, you have been imigrated to the civilized world more than 60 years equal to the palestinians. Do yu now how maney doctors, lawers, scients have the palestinians.? The ansewr they are many, how about the eritreans who immegrat and borne in the civiized world, nothing . Most eritreans was learning kuran in Egypt Cairo lnstead of other subjects . You see Mr. Kidane before you write such stupied Article you have to study your aguly history then you will talk about Tigrians. You have to say about yourself if you are fit to be noughbor of the tigrians or not.
You are fit to be noughbor of Rashaida and other Arabs to sale our organ and make us slaves. How much the Egyptians paid you to write such miserable aticle. ? No one can chit any more the real eritreans from thier Tigrian brothers, the nearst brothers are Tigrians, if there is some one ignorant like you will think and write .
I think contrary ,you eritreans have comlex of inforiority not Tigriand, because they have been under european colnialism they are still ignorants and kdemt nothing eles. I am sorry to write such words to insult myself but it is the reality.
you are like Eplf for its complex of inferiority militraly they are continue to say we teach you , we teach you etc.
Who is the teacher and who is the student. Are not or was not all chequar Dangs, weather Eritreans or Tigrians. Myself I have seen the complex of inferiority shadushy werar by saying we composate them in the battle of Shire, we help them to occupy Addis Abeba
It was wise to eritreans to say we was collabrating instead to complicated the situation . My friend you have ore complex on the eritrens than Tegaru and you don't merit to be thier noughbor not thrm to be declassified as noughbor of the eritreans Kebessa. Don't provock enrmity between prople, if you want to critisise the regime of ethiopis and Tigray regim because they have thier owen government thst is ok

Hence, we must stop pampering them once for all. If Tigrawot don't like the color of our eyes, we must flex our arms to teach them a final lesson like their predecessor regimes.

  93. If you are real Geologist, better to come up with some constructive ideas than destructive. First of all you should differentiate between Tigrians leadership and Tigrian people. Do you know they too (the people of Tigray) are also suffered by their leadership? Then if you believe in what you are saying, why do we allow 40, 000 DEMHIT soldiers in our land?? Are they the next "take overs" of Eritrea?? Is that why the few elite in the government making our people leaving the country so the DEMHIT will take over the millitary?? Think about it.

  115. Eritreans are loving, caring and God fearing people - meaning, they love any fellow human beings. That is a fact and a given thing.
    This implies,
    - Eritreans by nature, do not hate any one, be it Ethiopian, Tigrayan, Somali, Djiboutian, etc.
    - And as a principle, Eritreans, do not hate, (for the sake of hating) Ethiopians, be it Tigrayans, amhara, etc..
    - Asking for justice, or fighting for your independence and also fighting for and defending your sovereign land (badme or any place, be it tiny land or a huge state), should never be equated for hate.
But, let me stress one thing here - Eritreans hate the "WOYANIE" , they also hate the past successive Ethiopian rulers (Derg & Hileslassie), their arrogance, brute force and for the atrocities they committed on the Eritrean people
When we say "Woyanie", we mean the "Woyanie as an institution", we don't mean the civilian people of Tigray. We hate woyanie, but not the Tigray people as a whole.
The only problem I have with the Ethiopian people (As people) in general and the Tigray people in particular is because they never seem to care or never seem to show or voice any concern when their successive leaders or governments seem to repeatedly violate Eritrea and the Eritrean people.
Particularly now, while on one had they claim they elect their leaders, and while the Tigray people been fighting alongside the Eritrean people against Derg, now they are quite and are letting their leaders, the Woyanie, violate Eritrea with out any objection (Ageb) form them.
You never hear any Tigrayan, say "Hey, we went to court, the court decided, we have to abide by law. Justice is justice, let us get out of Eritrea and mend relationship". You never hear them say that. Actually they seam to cheer their woyanie - and are projecting arrogance about it.

  119. Dear Kidane, all crackheaded people.
Tigrian do not have an inferiority complex. But EPLF and so called ""educated Eritreans" wants to be what they really are not at all. They want to be Arabs even if Eritrean has more Christian than Muslims. They consider themselves Italian, though they are black and have never seen the face of their Italians masters while they were serving them. They consider Eritrea like mighty superpower though they could not even defend their territory against a 6 month trained Ethiopian force. They assume that they are educated though the people of Eritrea was better educated during the Imperial time than after " Liberation", and are among the worst illiterate and uneducated people in Africa.

Your idiot leaders started the border war on pretext of Badme even though the world knows the reason was the country was in economic calamity due to lack of feasible and reality based economic plan which suits the people of Eritrea.

Thousands are dying fleeing the country because they can not live in utopia life.

What kind of illusion have you guys got ? Instead of blaming your idiot dedicators you want to blame Tigrian who fought for your freedom. You guys have to come to your conscious. Wake up if you are not Esayas's banda!!!!!

To add on what I have said above. It's a fact that colonized societies always get into crises it could be either self hate like how we see Asians trying so hard to lighten their skin, you also see some colonized societies loosing their self confidence and live thinking that white is better than them at the same time they look down on their fellow African brother thinking their are special and might even think they are different and the sad part is this gets transfered to generations that come next. What is special and what has one got to be proud of being fucked in the brain by a slave maker honestly. One can only be proud to keep his own history and his own identity. That is why Eritreans will always blame ethiopia and they can never free themselves of oppression cuz they have been weakened by colonization slaver. It kills the spirt it's like being raped. Am sorry Eriteans your suffering will go on and on you have not learned yet that you are still ethiopian and still African. No you are not Frenej and no you are not special, you are not more attractive or intelligent no you are the same and almost indifferentialable from any regular ethiopian yes 20 yrs has past you where your whole nation is going back in time and no ethiopia or tigray is not the cause but your raped colonized slave mentality that won't be easy to clean and I think totally hopeless. No you are not heros you are not freedom fighter you are feri a bad one for that matter that is why you die and sink in ships trying to run from one man. And yes he is a hero cuz he caught you all by the balls cuz he is tigrean sorry dudes
