Letter to President Obama on his controversial trip to Ethiopia

Letter to President Obama

Dear President Obama,

I am writing to express my deep concern over your planned visit to Ethiopia amidst worsening
human rights violations and political repressions.

As you may know, the TPLF-led ruling junta has recently declared to have “won” 100 percent of all parliamentary and regional seats. Ironically, this cruel electoral joke that has never been seen in any democratic elections, has only revealed that they have completely hijacked the whole electoral process and installed oppression as an institution. It is another testimony to the fact that the brutal minority junta has completely shut out the majority from democratically and peacefully participating in the political process of their country.

Against the backdrop of this shameless tyrannical travesty, I fear that your visit can be counterproductive as it can be misconstrued by the TPLF-led regime as your administration's endorsement and seal of approval for the sustenance of the crimes, atrocities, abuses, extrajudicial killings, torture and corruption that they are committing with impunity.

Scores of journalists, bloggers, activists, religious, political party and civil society leaders, as well tens of thousands of ordinary citizens that have never committed any crimes, are languishing in hellish jails across the country. As a result of the land grab policy, millions of poor peasants are being displaced to give way to corrupt oligarchs and their local and foreign business partners.

A cursory look at the annual U.S. State Department human rights report can even reveal a litany of disturbing atrocities being perpetrated against defenseless civilians. “The most significant human rights problems included: restrictions on freedom of expression and association, including through arrests; detention; politically motivated trials; harassment; and intimidation of opposition members and journalists, as well as continued restrictions on print media,” the report reads.

“The government continued restrictions on activities of civil society and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) imposed by the Charities and Societies Proclamation (the CSO law)....Other human rights problems included arbitrary killings; allegations of torture, beating, abuse, and mistreatment of detainees by security forces; reports of harsh and, at times, lifethreatening prison conditions; arbitrary arrest and detention; detention without charge and lengthy pretrial detention; a weak, overburdened judiciary subject to political influence; infringement on citizens’ privacy rights, including illegal searches; allegations of abuses in the implementation of the government’s “villagization” program; restrictions on academic freedom; restrictions on freedom of assembly, association, and movement; alleged interference in religious affairs; limits on citizens’ ability to change their government; police, administrative, and judicial corruption; violence and societal discrimination against women and abuse of children; female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C); trafficking in persons; societal discrimination against persons with disabilities; clashes between ethnic minorities….”

All these disturbing facts are excerpted from the text of your government’s human rights report. If the United States is indeed sincere about reporting and documenting the disturbing crimes of the ruling elite, it beggars question why your administration is silently rewarding the terrorists with aid money and diplomatic support.

I understand that the United States is cooperating with the ruling junta in Ethiopia in the fight against terrorism. As far as Ethiopians are concerned, I can assure you that the TPLF and its surrogates are the only terrorists in Ethiopia that have total disregard to their own constitution and laws. Using the so-called anti-terrorism law to terrorize journalists, activists, dissidents and ordinary citizens that raise their voice against the regime’s oppressive and unjust practices, they have practically criminalized free expression.

Mr. President, during your visit to Ghana almost six years ago, you had declared: “Africa does not need strongmen, it needs strong institutions.” It is for this very reason that visiting Ethiopia, where strongmen are playing the devil, sends the wrong message to the remaining evil dictators and corrupt tyrants across the world.

I firmly believe that the long-term interests of the United States seriously compromised when it forges alliances with tyrants known for their wanton disregard to human rights, individual liberty and dignity.

It would, therefore, be prudent to reconsider your travel to Ethiopia, which can be misinterpreted
as a blessing to the brutal regime which is committing crimes against humanity with direct and
indirect support from the United States.

Mr. President, I would like to urge you to cancel your travel to Ethiopia, which has been turned into a giant prison because it will send a much better message that being seen shaking hands with criminals who hands are soaked with the blood of so many innocent people. If cancelling your travel is not an option for whatever reason, please help Ethiopians by delivering a strong message in support of human rights, individual liberty, justice and democracy. All political prisoners must be freed unconditionally. So many children, moms, friends and loved ones are tearfully waiting for their release.

Mr. President, stand by the oppressed people of Ethiopia. In the end, when the dictators face their inevitable fall, we are the ones who will sing your song: “Free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty we are free at last.”

As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

I appreciate your attention.
Best regards

  6. Is this the beginning of the days when all Ethiopians will stand up to save their people? It is time for the Ethiopians to save their people from the Deki Mai Lamit, the Weyane. May be it is the time for the Ethiopians stand in unison, if Ethiopia is to be saved as united and peaceful country. If not Ethiopia is the next African country ready and set to be "Balkanized". Let us hope the Ethiopians have the wisdom to save their country from being the next "Yugoslavia". Let us hope such a protest is the first step..

  8. I can't believe the man who keeps telling us "it is the right thing to do" is doing the wrong thing by shaking hand with the terrorist woyane! Either it is lack of experience or lack of knowledge, or doing the wrong thing by the people will come to haunt this president. I am deeply disappointed in voting for him. President Clinton always listened to the people.

  14. the most wishful, ignorant & funniest "comment" ever ! It's good feeling to witness our enemies are like leaving on Mars.. completely oblivious to their physical environment .. expecting WEYANE to go as a result of a fake demonstration in DC and when the host country is the best friend and ally of TPLF ? .haha it can't get funnier .. . my question is , if you are so desperate... why the "king maker" Shabia unleash its Yekalo & Warsai Serawit , overrun Tigray in less than a day ..arrive at Minilik Palace the latest two days later and hand over the government to one of those liberation fighters in ERitrea ? won't that be a short-cut and simplest solution to achieve your objectives Shabia goons ? Deep inside you all know WEYANE won't go away in the near future .. this is all just አልምትኩም ብዮ አልዋሽም type attitude.. said & written for self consumption !

    .
Visits by US official to African House Niggers is nothing new. I have included a list of Ethiopian officials who visited USA starting from "His Majesty Haile Slassie" (aka Tefferi) .
Tell us what the poor people of Ethiopia benefited from all Haile Slassie & the Chiwawa Meles visits to USA. Tell us a single thing Ethiopians benefited as a direct result from all these visits, besides billions worth of military support you received to colonize a country about 1/20th the size of Ethiopia that you failed miserably in 1991.
    .
Please Do not include the recent 100% democratic election victory by HaileMariam, the 99.6% Meles' victory, the name people of the world associate Ethiopia with (greatest ever famine of 1984), the 80,000 Aids Abeba residents eating trash for survival, the 100,000 Ethiopian poor young girls generating Woyane's economic boom, the Al-Amoudi export of young girls to Saudi Arabia as the main export overtaking coffee, the sale of Ethiopia's fertile land to Arabs, Indians for 99 years at a magnificent world market price of $1.00/ Sq-Mile/ 1-week !!

  20. Zed,
Don't you think they should fix the image of Aids Abeba before expanding tourism?

  21. That is what success is too them.., they are like a little seeking its fathers approval of a job well done. The countries leaders themselves are followers. You can hear them at there woyane meetings repeating the phrase "alem meskira" over and over again... as if that is what will matter the next day when half the country is in prostitution (us state department don't be mad at me) and the kids are eating from garbage trucks (see youtube). Its completely disheartening that it is a black man from the white power structure that will come to see if the "serfs" have been doing a good job. Once again after the master comes to check his servants they will say "alem meskira". Yet everyone knows whats really going on no matter how much properganda is pedaled. The same conditions and diplomacy happened between mubarak and usa. He used to think to himself that "the world" supports him (alem meskira) but he should have been concerned if his people support him (seb de meskirelu).

  26. Very interesting contrast, Eritrea government is accused of human right violation and crime against humanity by the world community. Eritrea, Eritreans and their supporters are trying to stop one of the leader of the free world rom visiting Ethiopia. I just found it funny how people's worries and concerns are unmatched.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't understand why you guys are worried about. The visit can be a gain or loss for Ethiopian people which has nothing to do with Eritrea. One more thing, your leader was visiting Saudi Arabia, it was the high light of your countries diplomatic mission and we were blinded with a photo of your leader and the Saudi King holding hands like kids in grade schools. That image was so important for you guys, it was in every Eritrean web sites for two weeks. Now, the free world leader comes to Ethiopia , you guys have to belittle the visit as if it is not important. Do you guys really understand what is going on in your mind? You guys seem lost, have no direction, no logic at all, no sense of reasoning. I really don't care if Obama comes to Ethiopia or not but his visit to any country has political, economical, and diplomatic implication. If you don't see that I think you should see all visit by any state leader to or from other countries in the same degree. If you do that at least I admire you consistence.

    ReplyDelete
  28. In Africa there are more than 50 countries. All have similar problems. Your reasoning emanates from hatting or accepting someone or countries. Africa's problems are not related to which countries African nations are deal with, African problems are chronic problems that needs fundamental fixing. We, Africans always blame our problem that we can't fix on white people to run away from our issues. For same strange reason we like to stigmatize our problem on other races, particularly people who have been under colony do this stigmatization a lot. God help us.

  29. Around the world, 946 million people still go to the toilet outside. Eritrea is top of the list, with 77% of its population practising open defecation, a practice which can lead to the contamination of drinking water sources, and the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentry, hepatitis A and typhoid. A huge global effort has been focused on reducing these numbers and new data from theWHO/Unicef Joint Monitoring Programme, which has measured the progress made on access to drinking water and sanitation since 1990, shows that there have been improvements in certain areas.

Eritrea’s neighbour Ethiopia has achieved the largest decrease in the proportion of the population practising open defecation, from 92% in 1990 to 29% in 2015.

  30. Ignorant Shabo goon, every one gains from being friends with the USA.. even your ex foreign minister now incarcerated in an unknown location , Petros Solomon said " when America sneezes even Europe coughs" ...
next to the $billions TPLF's Ethiopia gets every year from the US & other US dominated institutions such as World Bank & IMF, there is a priceless diplomatic support USA extends to allies like ETHIOPIA.
Among many others for instance, thanks to US diplomat support, Ethiopia was able to colonise Eritrea for over 50 years and use its ports for FREE. and most of all it has enabled WEYANE to ignore EEBC 's decision to hand over Badme to Eritrea .

If Obama's visit to Ethiopia was not that important it wouldn't have become a sensational news across the glob on all major news outlets.. and this same website including yourself wouldn't have been whining like a badly beaten dog day and night since you heard this shocking news of Obama's visit to your "arch enemy" ETHIOPIA.
Sofar, among 54 African states only five important -, Ghana, Senegal, Egypt, South Africa and Tanzania have been visited by Obama and Kenya & Ethiopia are his latest additions to his historical trips to Africa.. And by design or default mama ETHIOPIA will be his last VISIT in Africa as head of state !! BASTA

  31. Under colony like ethiopia? there is no bigger one in Africa brother. You guys carry this air of arrogance with the fake history great britana has given you. While your actual history is just as rich. In the case of Eritreans we are saying white man just leave us alone and take your slave with you. That is it., we don't blame anyone for nothing even after years of bombs/napalm/cluster bombs we never seek 1 ounce of reparation from ethiopia but ethiopia after such ignorance and human rights violations for over 30+ years continues to occupy our lands and not leave us alone. This will inevitably end in the disintegration of ethiopia because your neighbors will all see that an "intact" ethiopia is a danger to everyones sovereignty in the region.

Let us talk about the social achievements that makes Eritrea the shining example of Africa, the envy of the world where all the people are eating off golden plates with their stomachs full every night.
