Eritrean ambassador insists her compatriots’ claims of persecution are an invention

Hanna Simon, Eritrea's ambassador to France

By John Cordina

There are over 300,000 Eritrean refugees – and thousands more seeking asylum – across the world: a significant proportion of people from a country whose population is only around six million.

But representatives of the Eritrean government will invariably dismiss claims of persecution, arguing instead that those who leave are simply doing so for economic reasons.

Hanna Simon, Eritrea’s ambassador to France, who was recently in Malta to attend a conference on irregular migration, was no exception.

When asked by The Malta Independent to comment about the claims of persecution that led to her compatriots seeking – and obtaining – humanitarian protection in Malta and elsewhere, Ms Simon was dismissive of their claims.

“Each of them will tell you that. Each of them tells the same story… that they have no freedom, that they are being persecuted. Have you realised that,” the Ambassador retorts after a brief pause.

“Let me tell you, all those ‘refugees’ are economic migrants,” she maintains, highlighting the fact that her country is one of the poorest in the world. In fact, despite its much larger size and population, its annual GDP is less than half that of Malta.

Ms Simon even claims that the number of people cited as having fled the country is inflated. She insists that the asylum policies of various governments were not only encouraging Eritreans to claim asylum, but were also encouraging others from Ethiopia and other neighbouring countries to falsely claim to be Eritrean to claim a place in Europe.

Of course, such an assertion implies that these “false” asylum seekers would be able to convince those assessing their asylum claims that they truly hail from a country they have not actually lived in, even though such entities – the Office of the Refugee Commissioner in Malta’s case – specifically seek to identify those making false claims of persecution to live and work in their country of destination.

In her comments to The Malta Independent, however, the ambassador does acknowledge that her country’s harsh national service is contributing to the departure of many Eritreans.

While men and women alike are ostensibly expected to serve for 18 months, the reality is that national service, which includes military service, lasts for an indefinite period.

But in any case, Ms Simon defends national service, and even the fact that people are serving for much longer periods than they should.

“The country has a right to prolong national service. People must understand that we are barely six million people facing a country of 90 million; we have to prepare the people to defend the country,” she maintains.

What Ms Simon is referring to is Ethiopia, which annexed Eritrea after the Second World War and stripped away the autonomy that the former Italian colony had been promised. A war for independence, which broke out in 1961, lasted for 30 years before Ethiopian forces were ousted from Eritrea when the Derg regime ruling Ethiopia at the time collapsed.

Relations between the two countries are tense – an ongoing border dispute saw them go to war between 1998 and 2000 and Ethiopia still occupies the border town at the heart of a dispute, even though international courts awarded it to Eritrea.

“We are working on getting national service back to 18 months, and working hard to push the economy forward, but the international community has to let us work and help us,” the ambassador maintains.

Ms Simon insists that not only are her country’s concerns being ignored by the international community, but Eritrea is also being unfairly targeted.

The country is under UN sanctions, primarily due to its apparent aid to the ash-Shabaab Islamist terrorist group in nearby Somalia – a claim it denies. At the conference, the ambassador had argued that sanctions punished people, rather than countries, and that the “baseless sanctions” her country faced were contributing to emigration.

Ms Simon also dismisses claims of religious persecution in her country, although this is cited as a factor contributing to the creation of refugees by the UN Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights. The country only recognises four religious groups with a long-established presence in the country – Orthodox Christians, Roman Catholics, Lutherans and Sunni Muslims – and members of various minority religions, including Jehovah’s Witnesses, are reportedly subject to persecution and arbitrary detention.

"The asylum policies of various governments were not only encouraging Eritreans to claim asylum, but were also encouraging others from Ethiopia and other neighbouring countries to falsely claim to be Eritrean to claim a place in Europe."

Indeed this agenda is waged by those so called op-groups with their handlers. in-order to lure the youth out of Eritrea. and the hyenas from the south are using this to their advantage.

  4. Dear Hanna,

I see some contradiction in your statemet."“false” asylum seekers would be able to convince those assessing their asylum claims"
If so, what is the number of the seekers? 300,000? or 500,000?
If they are spending more than USD 10,000.00 person all the way to Europe and some more then was it not better to have a small private business if there was a freedom in Eritrea?
The funny thing is the accused is which is the regime in Eritrea and the loud speakers of the tyrant like you are answering on behalf of the Eritrean people which are the victims.
It is like a man who punishes and abuses his wife and when the court asks the wife if the husband is abusing her, the husband replies that she is not abused. The one who should answer is the wife?? Which is the same for Eritrean people in this case. Is that not Hanna??
Regimes are not for ever but history is forever therefore it is a shame for you!!!!

  6. It is you who are contradicting to yourself Mr. or Ms Wedifre. Ambassador Hanna has make it clear saying as " the number of people cited as having fled the country is inflated.
She insists that the asylum policies of various governments were not
only encouraging Eritreans to claim asylum, but were also encouraging
others from Ethiopia and other neighbouring countries to falsely claim

But you hypocrite preferred not to understand what she has said.

  12. You need to cut the ambilical cord from Ethiopia. Don't keep "meowing" "Ethiopia too" every time something bad is said about Eritrea. Stand up as an Eritrean. You're not an Ethiopian and you will never be. Eritrea and Eritreans are now in charge of and are responsible for their destiny. Leave Ethiopia out of it. It muddies the water and not for a good result. Dragging Ethiopia into every Eritrean problem that creeps up as an ugly sore, does not make the sore better, less uglier or make it go away. It is futile. Ethiopia is gone. Ethiopia has moved on. Concentrate on Eritrea and Eritrean problems and come up with Eritrean solutions.

  13. Only talk and daily criying .....you can't change the reality in Eritrea by talking. Just build your nation first and block the migration to other country. The only solution is that. Otherwise you criying all year and blame the western Country, Ethiopia,Djibuti,Kenya..and so on

  17. So whats the solution Mr.know it all, do we have to loose up our identity to any passerby? Do you mean that Eritreans should let the legacy of our martyrs be used and abused by our enemies, so that they hit us back twice prolonging our misery through different reasoning as "Eritreans" ? We are a loughing stock to ugly doers, who infiltrate into our meetings and among our young refugees acting Eritreans. This will create tremendous confusion both nationally and diplomatically if not solved soonest possible. We should have clear policy about who is Eritrean by birth and/or obligations.

  20. I assume, we need to deal with the root cause of this problem. Yes, we were proud people. Yes, we paid unparalleled sacrifices for our cause. Yes, we are hardworking and meticulous people, reasonably to say. In my view, the majority of us need maturation and evaluate events, outcomes, etc, in different dimensions just for the sake of nation. We should do it. If we love our country, we need to be open and listen and digest the intricacies of nation building carefully and skillfully. Otherwise, we need to be careful at this unpredictable world. The most important is not to earn it, rather dealing skillfully on the HOWs and WHYs of preserving and developing it. We shouldn't allow cowboy politics to dominate in our midst. Otherwise, the country can be (let me repeat: can be) at stake for its survival. Please don't make a mistake on that. The trend is showing that apparently. WAHYO politics doesn’t help. PFDJ and its leader forgot it is now a different world. SMARTER GOVERNANCE IS A MUST FOR ERITREA. The avenue towards that
is just able, strategic and seasoned Eritreans should lead the nation. It is a mandatory right now before it is too late.

  21. I agree. Besides, stop threating people who are on the other side. The inquire commission members filed a complaint to UN human right commission that they have been subject to threats and intimidations from Eritrea and Eritreans. This was addressed right during the hearing. This is embarrassing to say the least. Now Eritrean government human right violation is reaching to UN staffs.

  24. "Able, strategic and seasoned Eritreans?" Where are they? If you believe that we have such qualification, outside the government umbrella, what are they waiting for? Why can't they act "carefully and skillfully" and PEACEFULLY to make a better change in politics of the country? Those who stand against the government are not any better as you grooming them with your golden brush otherwise we wouldnt have any Eritrean running to our enemies side of the border (with the experience and fresh memories of yesteryears on hand), we wouldnt see landsmen (?) who encourage the young to leave the country and make their way HAND on HAND with their killers, to end up on cruel smugglers mercy. We wouldnt see them encouraging sanction against own country. We wouldnt see them stand on the sidewalks screeming negativities (together with woyane gangs) when our people call on UN to make an end on the boarder ruling which is signed by both parties. We see them poping up websites and ethnic groups. If you call all those are "skilled" to lead the country, you are running towards headwind.

But, it is not working. What a strategic mistake by EPLF taking on Ethiopian people who are cousins of Eritrean people to make an enemy. Now the pill for your pain, hating Ethiopia, been used so often no one is responding to it. You better find something before you die. If you think hate is going to bring you love, may be it might work in Eritrea where people have become to hate themselves because of the way they are treated by their own government. I hope you heal soon, heal your soul, and flesh. Amen!!!!!!

I still remember the suffering I hade to face in your HIV/Hepitiets/scub infested camps been raped by your lawless security men. The price I had to pay will not give me back my life. I paid thousands of dollars, taken away my Eritrean ID card and my children from me, I still do not know their whereabouts. Do you still want me to love you ugly people? I do not say that it was worth in Eritrea than what I had to face across the border and I do not owe the government of Eritrea anything for my own actions of making a wrong decision to cross to enemyland. I sometimes believe that woyane have an agreement with outsider enemy to destroy Eritreans. I deserve the treatment because I betrayed my country without any shame.

Most courageous people who had bad experience in life most of the time turn around and make the best out of it to help themselves and others. But for most African people this kind of healing process never heard of, we rather be killed by the damage caused by our past bad experience than to forget and move on. I am not attacking you on personal level but I was just pointing out how hate can be damaging. By the way you most be the most beautiful person on earth because you referred all Ethiopians as an ugly individuals who have been referred as some of the most beautiful people in the world. 31. The discussion between y and Logic and the response below has given me interest. What I don't understand til now is how could a devastated country would stand on its feet before all the basic rights of people fulfilled? I believe the aim of the struggle was to liberate Eritrea from its oppressor. After independence the policy was designed to rebuild the country. Based on this schools are opened in every village. Health facilities are available in villages, road are constructed to allow women to give birth without problems. Children's right are Women's right most met i.e the necessary vacination is given to children under 5 and the death by far has decreased. Girls child education opportunity is satisfactiry. Women in Eritrea has all the opportunity to express themselves etc. To avoid water scarcity water dams are being constructed. Recenly there is a criminal law stipulated. I hope the revenue from our natural resources would help to adjust the standard of living of the people. Before all these are in place Weyanne open war and Erittreans started opposing the government. Some people take this advantage and are loughing at us as a result youth are fleeing and some highly skilled people are living the country and these are considered as huma rights violation. There is a saying Rome is not built in one day. The old Germans said we built our country eating... So why not our youth built their country? Why not skilled people stay home and be patient? I heard the debate in VOA Tigrnya and the two African journalists. One of the African journalists said when they argue it seems that they are talking about two countries. This a real scenario these days. We don't know each other. The difference is extreme. I wondered when I heard a debate between two young Eritreans, an opposition ex-fighter and Sheila. Enterefo the youth had very constructive reasons. I wish if everybody go back and remember what had been paid for this independence!

  34. Logic
    and Guestt:

    We
cannot hide our heads like an ostrich and deny the glaring existing condition of Eritrea. At this time and with its overall conditions, only its head is flouting above water. It is incumbent to consider this matter frankly and openly. We can then speak and criticize fairly, deeply, and objectively. It is far better for me to live and survive with only bread and water than being another cause of farther damage for Eritrea gained by a dear sacrifices of my brothers, sisters and fathers and mothers.

I understand your emotions but that should not be the manner if you love the country and concerned about its plight at this time and in this interdependent world of extra-ordinary socio-economic and techno-communication dynamics. I really wonder why you are trying to condemn and deny glaring facts and undeniable phenomena about the country. If we open the Pandora Box of PFDJ, there will be lot more details come out. Again, if we are committed to our country, we need to address those thorny issues. They are indeed critical determinants for the survival of the nation at this difficult time and complex world. Please don’t deny the developmental laws of nature and the scientific method of analysis. As the proverbial wisdom says: ‘ሓባእ ቁስሉ ሓባእ ፈውሱ”. If we want to ensure the sustained survival of our country, all of us should contribute and educate to raise the consciousness of the ordinary people who can be easily deceived by the awful PFDJ machinations. This challenge requests our prudence, wisdom, realism and consideration of conditions objectively. Do you wish Eritrea should repeat the mistakes and failures of others?.... I am sure you don’t. So we should accept the bitter and ugly reality and take serious popular measures to curtail it. It is unfortunate that we Eritreans are
starving of strategic, visionary and knowledgeable leaders and policy makers. Important and strategic decision making powers are in the hands of inept, narrow minded, probably sub-nationalism minded, vindictive and jealous individuals. What they say and what they actually do are antagonistically contradicting. Now, let me challenge you. Please evaluation the country using these variety of sustainable developmental indicators. You need to compare it with the required benchmark even at regional level.

    1. Macro-Economic Indicators
    2. Per-capital developmental indicators including Income
    3. Infrastructural indicators
    4. Socio-cultural development Indicators
    5. Technological indicators (very vital for overall development)
    6. Political development and Governance
    7. Sustainable and balanced regional socio-economic
    development.
    8. Entrepreneurial Innovation and Private Sector Economic Development Indicators
    9. Information Technology Indicators
    10. Social Justice and Human Right Development Indicators

Please compare these Eritrea's 24 years performance indicators with the reasonably nominated bench mark. Then you will find the reality. If you tell us only propaganda nobody will buy it including the ordinary Eritreans targeted for PFDJ brainwashing machinations as they are becoming conscious at alarming rate.

    ReplyDelete
  35. "Please compare these Eritrea's 24 years performance indicators with the reasonably nominated benchmark". Yr measurement are very sophisticated and where I guess this measurement fit to the developed countries. I think we both know our Eritrea's capacity very well. By any means yr standard of measurement doesn't suit our Eritrea. In the first place the 30years war had put the country into 0 level where everything has started from scratch and all were enjoying the air of freedom and were about to work together before the 1998 war broke. Did y forget the ex-fighters worked without salary for four years? Let me tell you one thing it was in 1994 a person told me the war is not yet finished and again in 1996 another person told me a story where our country and our independence is at a great risk. I loughed because we ve been awaring the people the importance of education, how to fight malaria and health dangers like hiv/aids etc. The rain availability is meagre and the land is defforested and dum was constructed to avoid water scarcity in order to tackle food security. That was why a foreigner once commented I think it was in 1992. He said Eritrea has human resources and needs a lot of amount of money to take out the resources. The development were on the way when the 1998 war broke officially. That time it was our Warsay who fought bravely. Before that the shrewed had started their homework to make us weak by deliberatly working first the war with Yemen, then Ethiopia and continued with DJ. After that the government learnt the provocation and continue doing its work then the fleeing of citizens in a large scale started. I admire y. Y r very good theoretically may be y studied economics but practically the reality in the ground is different from what y said. First the previous war had made the people mentally very backward and the agitation to make self-reliant was crucial to bring back the working mentality instead of waiting for food aid. That was why the NS were prolonged. Also education was not given a priority during the previous war. To the worst the fact in the ground are many had adhered to material interest instead of developing mental capacity.
One thing which worries me is to make Eritrea down it has been worked for the last 23 years. It started with our UNITY. They knew our weakness too. I don't know the word in English like it is a type of worms in Amharic 'meste'. Our UNITY was eaten like miste and our weakness is exposed i.e lack of tolerance and understanding each other. We should be cautious and come together instead of condemning and single out mistakes or else shortcomings. Yr profession is highly needed to feel the gap. Both of y and me are in the same boat. Our approach is different. Both of us think to our future generation in particular and at large to our country, Eritrea..

  42. This is a contuation of my response Alec you........his evil deeds. Take away the blinds from your eyes and see the reality, the reality his Reign of Terror is impacting on our people, who are escaping in droves to neighboring countries and Western countries. He is cleansing Eritrea of its people on many levels:

    1. Incarcerations and leaving them in perpetutty to rot and perish.

    2. Killing them straight with spray of bullets by killing squads.

    3. Rounding them up from schools , homes, streets to Concentration Camps, which he, euphemistically, name " national service". These are places where the people are psychologically and systematically handled to exacerbate their anxiety so they run away right into traps of his network of human traffickers to be sold for huge financial rewards.

    4. While the young and able are escaping to save their lives, the older people are dying of starvation, lack of medocine , depression , of the contaminated food and expired cooking oils they eat.

    5. The Birth Rate in Eritrea is fast dropping to zero because youngsters are either fleeing Isaias agewerki' s reign of terror or are succumbing to it .

    6. The Eritrean Orthodox Church has published for circulation among Eritreans abroad highlighting the destruction Isaias afewerki
Is inflicting on our people and way of life.

To all these and many other of his crimes, Isaias Afewerki is hiding his evil intent and deeds behind a mask of false patriotism and behind a mask of laying false blame on the western countries.

Last but not least, we must never forget that woyane and Isaias Afewerki are coordinating their evil deeds behind the scene. The case of ELF and Badme are few among the many examples that can shed light into the dark secrets.
Isaias handed over Badme to woyane on the eve of our victory on Ethiopian colonialism. The people of Badme were excluded from voting during the National Referendum. Many EPLFs complained about it but Isaias refused to listen. But in 1998, he launched Eritrean armed forces to seize the terriory by force under the cover that tegaru militia killed Eritrean Army Officers. Woyane responded by informing the UNSC about the invasion and declared war followed by the three year war.

On the surface, the handing of Badme to woyane by Isaias seems paradoxical on the surface but if you go deeper, by so doing , Isaias and woyane were burying a time bomb to plunge the unwitting Ethiopians and Eritreans in a fraudulent war in which Eritrea was not only destined to lose but also to be decimated in a drawn out no war no peace situation. The rancor of Isaias Afewerki against the UN Peace Keepers, the UN General Secretary, the UNSC, the USA and his support to the defeated Somaly Islamist etc. were all predicated upon exacerbating the Eritrean situation. And his usurpation of the leadership of the Eritrean government was designed to implement his evil intent unconstrained by anybody.

"Please evaluation (evaluate) the country using these variety of sustainable developmental indicators. You need to compare it with the required benchmark even at regional level.".....

Why on earth should a still new (25 years of age) country get compared to those 200 years of age who never had war and devastation ?
Why should we benchmark the arrogance, grid, and occupation of our enemies that put Eritrea 100s of years backward with our hardgained State of Eritrea?

Those you use as your rolemodels are the once who gained millions of dollars when freely used and abused the ports of Eritrea for ages while killing our economy, our most fruitful factories, agriculture, school system and Eritrean languages, hunged our well educated young professionals inside our country.

There is no any country at our REGIOn who suffered like Eritrea and survived against all odds. Never !

Every thing we do, we do it for us and on our own way for the reason, no benchmark is needed.

The reason I told you that you contradicting yourself is this, you cannot live on bread and water while dreaming to benchmark Eritrea with others.
Those who live on bread and water are working hard to make the ends meet and sweat with no retreat. No need to mention that those who see the best side of the story are the ones who achieve best results.

  52. "Anchewe tamechewe anche tarochewe." We ve said 101 times that no body hates Ethiopia. The reason given below and yr admission is a proof to your betrayal. Now and then, problem after problems are hampering the good neigboring. Y ve posted so many times ideas which makes apart instead of bringing us together. We forgive but we do not forget.

GET READY I WILL HIT YOU BACK WITH YOUR OWN WORDS :)

    YOU SAID....
you are criticizing me,….., because, I am criticizing the current regime - NOWAY I CRITISIZE YOU, BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ERITREA ! LOL LOL

it is PIA and his PFDJ are the only guardians and protectors of the country GIVE ME SOME OTHER NAME if you have any LOL LOL LOL

Please think twice what will happen 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, etc., from now - BRIGHT FUTURE.

if the next generation has the level of maturity, civility, prudence, I am really concerned about our future, whether we will be the real owners of our country.
-settlers who will be the future economic and strategic bosses of our country as a result of our.... failure…i,e to be servants of settlers in our own country - YOU MEAN ETHIOPIA?

PFDJ dictatorship and mayhem and the non-stochastic, and emotional support of many Eritrean PFDJ supporters like you will bring this inevitable scenario - SAWA, PFDJ, YPFDJ, NATIONAL SERVICE, ARE WHAT WOYANE ENVY ERITREA FOR ITS PURE AND ORIGINAL ERITREAN INNOVATION LIKE MOGOGO ADHANET :) LOL LOL LOL

Blind hatred even with our neighbors doesn’t help, REALLY ? LOL

Please don’t try to defend the weakness and destruction brought by the PFDJ mantra. WHY ARE YOU AFRAID OF PFDJ?

PFDJ dictatorship and mayhem and the non-stochastic, and emotional support of many Eritrean PFDJ supporters like you will bring this inevitable scenario - I KNOW, PFDJ IS UTMOST MEDICINE THAT KILL WOYANE DREAM

like it or not, investors, professionals, able settlers will come from elsewhere to compute with us, means we will be servants of them in our own country like what happened in several countries - U MEAN ETHIOPIA ?

Blind hatred even with our neighbors doesn’t help - U MEAN HATING YOU ?

pull ourselves out of this sad situation due to the failure of nurturing our maturation as people - WHY? IS IT BECAUSE WE ARE LAW ABIDE PEOPLE ?

As very strategic geographical location and hardworking people, Eritrea can replicate the radical and extra-ordinary success - AMEN TO THAT !

    LOL

You see guys woyane will come on different colors wearing ERITREAN MANTEL to dance among us, if we are not united to expose such EVIL neighbors, our failure is evitable. Those who trust woyane never learned from history yet, same as those who make their non-stop race to our neighbour on the south on daily basis. BE MAN ENOUGH AND ADMIT YOUR MISTAKES if you take the risk WILLFULLY ! No Eritrean is impressed of your excuses.
