Shock, Anger in Ethiopia over IS Killings

By AddisStandard

After the release of a video by Islamic State on Sunday showing what the group said was the killing of 28 Ethiopian Christians, thousands of Ethiopians have taken to social media to express their shock and outrages. Many facebookers have changed their profile picture to black following by updates expressing their anger. “Wee hours of the morning here and I’m still devastated, flabbergasted and absolutely heartbroken since hearing the reports of the horrific loss we suffered at the hands of a group of sub humans…” wrote a facebooker, Zecharias Etyopia. “This made my stomach turn,” said Goitom Gebreluel, another Ethiopian who shared the news on his facebook wall.

Meanwhile, many are expressing their frustration at the official response given by Redwan Hussien, government spokesperson, who said it was not clear if the victims were Ethiopians and that the Ethiopian embassy in Cairo was investigating the matter. “At this point we cannot be sure if the victims are Ethiopians,” Redwan said.

“They’re not Ethiopians. They look Chinese to me. Take a class in PR 101,” wrote Mesfin Tekle, another Ethiopian, in response to Redwan’s statement. Speaking anonymously a young banker said, “It is painful that the government is trying to turn our sadness into a propaganda material. No official condolence to the bereaved is expressed; I have never felt let down like this,” he said.

Redwan also took the opportunity to warn Ethiopians leaving the country using various means. “If this is confirmed, it will be a warning to people who wish to risk and travel to Europe through the dangerous routes,” Redwan told Associated Press. However, his statement hasa ngered many who believe the government at home is to blame for the mass exodus of Ethiopians in recent years.

The 29 minute video showed purported Ethiopians beheaded and shot gruesomely. It was released on the militant’s social media outlets and couldn’t be verified by an independent source.

The United States government condemned the killings in “the strongest terms.” A spokeswoman for the White House said on Sunday “That these terrorist killed these men solely because of their faith lays bare the terrorists’ vicious senseless brutality.”

The victims are believed to be migrants trying to reach Europe. The news came only a few days after African migrants (including Ethiopians) have experienced xenophobic attacks in South Africa, news of a boat that sank with hundreds of African migrant in Mediterranean, which many Ethiopians suspect is also carrying their fellow men and women and a civil war in Yemen that caught Ethiopian migrant workers trapped; many are believed to have been killed in Yemen.

  2. African governmnets always think first their powerbase and propogand before the well being of thier people. What the Ethiopian information mister said is similar to what Eri-TV did for year ago when over 300 Eritreasn were drowned outside of Lampadus, yes we were told that they were "illegal african immigrant" and even later when it was clear that those were Eritreans the president refused to declare day of mourning or went on to Eri-TV to send his condolences to the families. At least the Ethipian government is coming to their sense at the end is now declaing three days of mourning. RIP our brothers regardless of your nationality.

  3. Most likely at least some of the victums are Eritreans, as usual we dont have a governmnet who stand up for them. The so called government of ours didnt even bother to condemn this barbaic act leat alone to investigate if some of the victums could be Eritreans. If is fair to say that the maffia group in Asmara doesn't represent us.

  4. An Ethiopian facebooker Pieced these pictures to show 2 of those killed by ISIS were Ethiopians

They are named Iyasu YekunoAmlak and Balcha Belete, childhood friends both from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Cherkos Sub-city. RIP

  6. Ethiopians should stop breeding like rats, and creating this type of tragedy to their offsprings. In a span of 45 years, the Ethiopian population has grown from about 15 million to 100 Million. Ethiopia is naturally poor, technological backward country, how in the hell is it going to support this type of population ? Unless Ethiopia takes drastic measure to curb and cut its population, it will be a source of misery to its people, and a source of instability for neighbouring countries. Which neighbouring country in its mind will want to have economic or other type of integration if the they are breeding like cocrouches, and invading.

    RIP for the victims.

  7. Weyane is responsible for looting Ethiopia and driving Ethiopians off their land in droves and selling it to foreigners, in the process leaving these poor people desperately attempting to reach Europe/South Africa/anywhere else for a better life economically. Their military misadventures in Somalia is only further exposing their migrants to ISIS terrorist scum.

  8. Does injecting Eritreans and Eritrean government make the tragedy and the horrendous crime less painful to you, my friend? ? Can you find in your heart some human decency, if you have any, at least for once and let these people let rest in peace instead of playing 'Eritrea too'. What a psychopath!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Are you isis supporter ? please, brief . Why did you try to mask the isis crime against human being? You are deflecting the main issue to another non related issue. I think you are on the brink of madness indeed.

  10. What a very sad and heart breaking news! Why are their pictures on line? Is it fair to paste it in facebook? Who ever paste it why on earth make their families scared? 'Kedetu wedematu' while our sorrow has deeply hearted us because of the perished Eritreans , again these ISIS victims, SA victims ang again 700 people are drowned yesterday. What is going on? In the past years we used to hear 'semenetyawe she'. Is it really the end of the world? I have no more word to say. My mind is blocked. Please GOD give us yr hand and let us live in peace!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yohannes, these individuals are immigrating because they have no future in Ethiopia. That is the root cause. We can condemn ISIS and fight it but it is not going to solve the problem, those who escaped ISIS are drowning in the sea ! We should treat the cause, not the effect ! If it takes putting a chemical on the country's water supply to reduce fertility, let it be, the government should take measure to this effect.

Britain is rich naturally, and advanced technologically. But they make the scarifies to control the urge for many children in order to give better life for the few. Birtain's population has grown from 53 million to 63 million in 55 years, while Ethiopia's has grown from 15 million to 100 million !!!

  12. Dan, you are a cunt. You use a tragedy to vent your anger, hopelessness and misery for what has become of your still-born Eritrea. Stop the hate, shut your trap, roll up your sleeves and pull out the sewage you find your country and people. Stupid Anbeta.

    ReplyDelete
  13. No Anbeta, it is YOU and the likes of you that have no future. You're dispersed through out the world losing your heritage, culture and religion and becoming servants and toilet cleaners in the wealthy western world.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The Ethiopian government did not deny the victims were Ethiopians, they wanted to confirm the real identity of the victims before making official comments. That's how a civilized society and government conducts itself. As for Issayas, he has yet to officially recognize that those that drowned off Lampadusa were Eritreans.

You play "Ethiopia too" every chance you get. You can't deny that. Everything you post about Ethiopia is bad news. You have nothing nice to say about Ethiopia. You fought 30 years to get your independence yet you're still hating Ethiopia. An Ethiopia, admitedly that did not accept Eritrea's independence is now extremely grateful to have gotten rid of the parasitic cancer known as Eritreans that had been infesting Ethiopian society. I hope soon every single Eritrean will be plucked out of Ethiopia and dropped off in the sand-box you love and cherish known as Eritrea.

About your being a civilized society- well...what can I say except advising you first reclaim your dignity, extricate yourself from handouts and stand like a normal human being with your two feet instead of your knees and then, only then you can pound your chest about your civility!

  19. Why Ethiopians are leaving their country is not my business and there are 90M ethioians to discuss it. My concern is why Eritreasn are leaving Eritrea?. 34. My solution is for us diaspora Eritreans to demand the end of this worthless and endless national service and timelimit it to 18 montehs. BTW ask yourself people have been in the service for over decades to defend from what? There wont be any full invation from the Woyanes of the simple reason that USA doesnt want to have two fully failed state which can be used as terrorist base. Hence what is the defence to have all the adult population in the national service for ever?. The only reason is that the mad dog knows pretty well a big population of youth in the cities means revolt or revolution to his one mane rule.

  47. What is the "our kindness" you're refering to. What did you do? Who wants anything from you, kindness or otherwise? You're ignorant and rat-brained. Eritrea is still-born. Eritrea has not gone anywhere in a quarter of a century of independence. Not a single development of significance has taken place. 25 years later, the world equates Eritrea as "North Korea of Africa" "Pariah State" and "Failed State". Where's the great economic, political and social achievements you fought 30 years for? Where?? When Ethiopians were executed by ISIS, the government of Ethiopia, which in itself is not perfect or ideal by any means... after ascertaining that the victims were indeed Ethiopian declared 3 days of nation mourning. What did PIA do for the over three hundred that drowned off Lampadusa?? NOTHING!!! He and his goons called them "African Migrants" and did everything to distance itself from the victims. Issayas did everything to imply that the victims were Ethiopian and not Eritrean. You bled like no one in history to install a vicious, leadership in Eritrea to destroy what war had not destroyed. So please do tell all... what is your "kindness" you're refering to?

  48. Dan, , I think it would be best to spray DDT on every corner of the sand box baptized "Eritrea" by the Italians and get rid of the filthy Anbeta that keep annoying Ethiopia. I think that would solve the problem of the Horn of Africa for good. That is the root cause of everything that happened to Ethiopia. The filthy lecherous parasitic Shabia and its followers. If DDT does not take out all the filth, it might be good to carpet bomb. We can then look to other solutions if this does not do the job. <--- Do you see what a stupid, inhuman, primitive and a sniviling slime that you are?

Why has the Eritrean government come out and condemn this horrible crime against its own people, when the Ethiopian government has stepped up and is doing everything it can? Someone answer this....

    ReplyDelete
  51. MammoQilo (curious you use an Amharic name...) It seems to me the only way you can comprehend any idea or issue is through the narrow prism of Ethnicity. Because that is the only way Eritreans can handle Ethiopians. By disecting them in to ethnicities, each ethnic group can be brought down in size both econimically and politically to atlease some comparison to Eritrea. That said if the definition of my ethinicity is the only way you are able to comprehend my postings - here it is. One of my maternal great grand mothers was Eritrean but that was at the time Eritrea itself did not exist so in essence she was Tigrignya from Hamasien. The rest of me is a mix of everything south of the Mereb. Which is what Ethiopia is. A populous, econimically and militarily increasingly more and more powerful nation. The anchor that holds the so called Horn of Africa in a stable sphere. I'm an Ethiopian. Pure and simple. Also, along with many many Ethiopians, I am grateful for Issayas. If it was not for his narrow mindedness and egotistical immaturity, Ethiopia would have been screwed. A smart, cunning and calculating Issayas would have delayed the independence of Eritrea until Eritrea had sucked dry Ethiopian resources to built an Eritrean Industrial base that would have been undeniably in control of not only Ethiopia but the Horn of Africa both militarily and econimically. But alas, much to mine and every Ethiopians' hindsight delight, he miscalculated and declared a premature independence and a few years later caused the deportation of 50% of Eritreans residing in Ethiopia. I really should get a bumper sticker that reads "I LOVE ISSAYAS AFWERKI - SAVIOR OF ETHIOPIA!!"

    ReplyDelete
  52. I have no reason to have a complex. Ethiopia has rid herself of the bad image of a starving poor nation to one that is slated to be a middle income country within 10 years. I've lost nothing. But it does please me to see the enemies of Ethiopia defeated. I just enjoy putting in check those who spew stupid fabricated hateful and wishful thinking with historical and current facts. That is all. Don't get me wrong, EPRDF is no angel, but atleast it is under EPRDF that Ethiopia has witnessed economic, political and military resurregence.

    ReplyDelete
  53. DOGALI , I DOUBT IF IT TAKES THAT LONG FOR EMAMA ETHIOPIA TO ACHIEVE THE MIDDLE INCOME COUNTRY STATUS; THE WAY THINGS ARE GOING ,ANOTHER 3 TO 5 YEARS WE WILL BE THERE.THAT IS WHY OUR NEIHBOURS IN THE NORTH ARE CRYING.DIA IS NOT SMART,CUNNING AND A POLITICIAN ;BECAUSE OF HIS ACTIONS THEY ARE NO MORE COFFEE EXPORTING , NEVER EXPORT LOGS OF WOOD TO SAUDI, NO MORE TEFF FROM GOJJAM AND MORE.THE LAST DAYS OF DERG THEY CORRUPTED THE CITY COUNCIL OF ADDIS AND MOST OF ADDIS ABEBA WAS PARTITIONED TO ERITREANS WITH PLOTS OF LAND AS BIG AS THE ADDIS STADIUM.THANK HIM WE GOT RID OF ALL THAT. HE USED TO VISIT HIS CONCUBINE IN ADDIS BEFORE THE WAR BROKE OUT AND WHILE DRUNK HE USED TO COMPLAIN THAT AFTER 30+ YEARS OF STRUGGLE THEY (SHABIA)IS LEFT WITH A PARCH LAND THAT IS ERITREA PROPER AND EPRDF HAS THIS BIG ,VERY RICH ETHIOPIA.LET THEM TALK ETHIOPIA WILL ACT AND WE WILL SEE WHAT THE NEXT FIVE YEARS WIIL BRING.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Indeed Issias is a savior of Ethiopia for he killed and buried once and for all your delusion of creating your own 'independent' state. Indeed you should also be thankful and grateful to him for 'aiding and abetting' you in 'discovering' your Ethiopianess.

Having said that, it would be dishonest of me if I fail to confess my disappointment in you for omitting from your list how democratic Ethiopia is. Yes I wouldn't contend with your assertion that Ethiopia is the most populous. Hell with Nigerians, right? Economically? No reason for me to question your GDP numbers since you had me at 'the most populous'. No need for me either to believe my own eyes the thousands of kids who scavenge in Addis dump sites. In my defense though, I admit, Dedebit maths is way over my head. Militarily? The last time I heard, being wary of your firepower, Eritreans have been hiding behind Susan Rice's skirt for the last 15 years. But hey, I heard you guys have good imaginations. I was even impressed with your Airforce's accomplishment in a feat that equates only Hollywood's when it destroyed Bisha ...

I digressed. Yeah, about your being democrat. We had even a testament to that from one US State Department officials, right? That would by itself is a reality...Aderba Kadarba.....BOOM...the Genie grants your wish and becomes a reality, just everything else you claim.

Hell with all those stubborn realities called development indices that your woyane-led Ethiopia keep adorning at the bottom every year, not to speak about your IQ being higher only Nigerien. I didn't say that. The people who have been whispering in your ear how strong militarily, economically and politically you are are the same ones who say those things. Please don't prove them right with your vituperation, acrimony and bitterness, not to mention non-sense scribbles!

    Should I say more!

    Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Look at you! You have finally taken your real job at pro-Eritrea sites boldly! Like all propagandists of Ethiopian origin, you have finally taken your assigned role without the need to hide your intent!

Don't get me wrong, I am not against Ethiopia reaching a high income level. We would be better off if Ethiopia is prosperous--not that we would benefit from it, but perhaps you would finally leave us alone. However, you should wish for all the neighborhood and beyond to prosper. Otherwise, the events of the past week or so that took place in South Africa will repeat in Ethiopia. Ethiopians would be even worse than South Africans when it comes to xenophobia! Look at the lies you have written about Eritreans, to understand what I mean!

It is shameful to repeat of you to repeat the pre 1998-2000 war propaganda of Eritrea as an exporter of coffee exporter, which at the time your Weyanes claimed made Eritrea the 13th top coffee exporter while Ethiopia was the 3rd! Any one with a tiny little bit of thinking capacity would have concluded that 3rd and 13th is impossible as Ethiopia by itself would have been the largest exporter in the world!

Listen, with the relationship that the two governments had before the war and the future that was envisioned, it would not have been a surprise for Eritrean INDIVIDUALS who have always lived in Ethiopia to take up coffee exporting as a business to wherever. There were many Eritrean coffee exporters ever since Ethiopia annexed Eritrea! If that is what you are talking about, check your sensibilities again!

When are you going to learn that economic development and growth does not have to come only from citizens? This is not the first time you have made an unreasonable comment on trade. Why are you not complaining about Starbucks now? Compared to Eritreans, Starbucks is more powerful because it is a large coffee buyer and therefor has the power to lower coffee prices and it is backed by your bosses (from their country)! Racism? The White Man is always better? What are you going to say about the Chinese and other foreign nationals who are contributing to the Ethiopian GDP right now? It is not a zero sum game, wake up mister!

By the way, I contend that the reported high rate of growth of Ethiopia's economy is because of the about the $4 billion added to it every year. These are numbers that will just be added in addition to what the NGO's bring and the trade and tourism that is encouraged by the favorable relations with Europe and US. After accounting for whatever goes back to those giving you aid, the remaining should be useful if used properly!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ethiopia never annexed Eritrea;first federated to by the then un and the union at the request of you the highlanders.Yes the coffee exporters were Eritreans, and there was nothing wrong if they did it from Ethiopia, but smuggling it out of addis in the middle of the night, then reexporting it from Eritrea as if it is grown in eritrea and off course collecting the payment in foreign currency and paying the ethiopian farmer in NAKFA.Yes there are all sorts of people from different countries,Ethiopian of eritrean origin too who are in the business and no Ethiopian has any problem no racism!!!!,but the way it was done then was shameful. Did you know eritreans had a hawala office in addis then ,where they pay in Birr in addis collecting the hard in europe and america, and the foreign currency used to go to Eritrea. The high rate of growth could be a result of anything ,I admire you for being truthful and admitting that there is one contrary to all that say otherwise and mostly from our northern neighbours.I wish you take a couple of days and visit Ethiopia ,you would witness the change like i do travelling to Asmara. You said something about Ethiopians being more xenophobiic than others ,shame on you ,you know how many Ethiopians of Eritrean origin are still in addis running profitable business and none care.leave you alone if we prosper? What is that statment supposed to mean? Gasha let me assure you , i may not be representing a100% of ethiopians but my intellegence guess is ,a majority of Ethiopians have completely forgotten if there exists a country called Eritrea. It is your likes who are trumpetting it.We have a lot to do and are busy trying.
