Ethiopia: TPLF’s Diplomatic Move Towards Greater Tigray

Ethiopia: TPLF’s Diplomatic Move Towards Greater Tigray

Amanuel Biedemariam

On February 9, 2015, Peace talks between the Ethiopian government and the ONLF resumed in Nairobi. According to the head of foreign of affairs of the ONLF Mr. Abdirahman Mahdi,

“The objective of their talk with the Ethiopian government is to end the conflict of the region and to get the Ogaden Somalis for their right of Self-determination.”

This raises many questions. Why now and why negotiate when the stated objective of the ONLF is self-determination? Why negotiate before a major national election? Is this a move towards some bilateral relation with the ONLF if agreement is reached? A ploy to stall, or is to confuse the Ethiopian people?

However, the biggest and most significant development took place in Tigray. On February 18, 2015, the 40th anniversary of the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) was held in Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray Regional State. According to Ethiopian News Agency (ena),

“The celebrations were attended by President Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan, Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia, Prime Minister Kamil Abdelkadir Mohamed of Djibouti, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda of Uganda, and Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission. Prime Minister Hailemariam and, senior government officials earlier laid wreaths at the cemetery at the Martyrs Monument to honor those who died in the seventeen year struggle against the former military dictatorship.”

The minority apartheid regime monopolizes all aspects of the nation’s governance and has long-denied the opposition political space. After the 2005 rigged elections, the people of Ethiopia have given-up on peaceful democratic transition. As a result, there are many opposition groups waging armed struggle. In the North, Tigray Peoples Democratic Movement (TPDM), on the South the Oromo Liberation Front OLF, in the East the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), in central Ethiopia Arbegnoch – Ginbot7 for Unity and Democracy Movement (AGUDM) to mention some.

The people of Ethiopia have long accused the TPLF of trying to create an independent Tigray state. According to Article 39 of the Ethiopian Constitution that the TPLF wrote and instated,

“Every nation, nationality and people in Ethiopia has an unconditional right to self-determination including the right to secession.”

This means, based on the constitution when the regime chooses it can declare independence. Ethiopians have long accused that the TPLF accords disparate advantage to Tigray. They accuse the regime of creating a de-facto nation within a nation. They accuse it for diverting major resources into Tigray.

The minority regime has been building roads, international airport, stadium (capacity 60,000) and rail way systems that link Tigray to the world independent from the rest of Ethiopia. In the capital city of Tigray region Mekele, they built a diplomatic row to house future diplomats and facilitate diplomatic activities. Key aspects of Ethiopian military and air force is firmly established in Tigray.

In Africa it is not customary; in fact it is unheard-of to see leaders of states honor a revolution that is specific to one region inside a nation. In this case a country that is home of the African Union, Ethiopia.

The agenda of the TPLF is the independence of Tigray (Abay Tigray). The leaders of Sudan, Somalia and Rwanda know the regional, ethnic and religious diversity Ethiopia offers.  They also understand issues associated with it and have firsthand experience on how these regional and ethnic differences can tear-apart a nation as in Rwanda and South Sudan. Hence, it makes one wonder of the thought process and the reasoning for accepting such an invitation and the participation at the presidential level.

By inviting the leaders to celebrate the 40th year anniversary of “Tigray People’s Liberation Front” in Tigray, the TPLF conducted a de-facto diplomatic relation with these countries. The question, is this a last move towards the independence of Tigray?

Conclusion

The TPLF used the 40th anniversary of the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front to introduce the idea of independent Tigray guised as “Tigray Regional State.” This is dangerous move that has no chance to succeed. It will also increase the tension in Ethiopia and throughout the region. Few from the minority clique have benefited in the name of Tigray and at the expense of the majority. This has now created resentment and mistrust which is a recipe for disaster.

Hence it is incumbent upon all peace loving people to ensure the future stability of the region through cooperation and campaigns to undermine the dangerous minority clique and stop it on its tracks.

  5. Y know when I heard the news eventhough I cannot clarify like him but something came into my mind. I said to myself why are those people there. Our case was finished in 1991 i.e religion and awraja differences were deafted and fought for independence. We shouldn't have been involved in such a chaos if the present Ethiopian leaders stick on the objective at first hand ruling Ethiopia as one country with no religion or else ethnic differences. I think the above issue in my understanding has impact in relation to what is mentioned above.

  6. Do you guys know that Tigrai is much smaller now than it was before 1991? Before 1991, it had an area of more than 100,000 square kilometers. Now, Tigrai has an area of of less than 60,000 square kilometers. Open your geography/history books( if you have any) and you will the fact written there. You are just bullshitting. No one of you can disprove this statement of mine because it is a FACT. But, I hope that the administration in Tigrai will seriously start claiming Tigrais historic lands and Tigrai will be represented by its real map and not just by the fake map which is in use now. The current map represents much more smaller Tigrai than the REAL Tigrai. How many reductions should Tigrai undergo? In 1889, Tigrai lost almost half of its land mass to Italy( I mean the now so-called kebesa Eritrea). In the 1940's, it lost much of its fertile land to Wollo and Gondar. In 1991, its area was decreased by almost 40%. Come on now!!

PIA's did with esat tv, the only lion we know in all the continent of monkeys or donkeys, sorry for being obvious).

  8. After every thing is said done and after breaking up Ethiopia like Yugoslavia, Abay Tigrai is where the Weyane dream to land. While the rest of the balkanized Ethiopia could go their separate ways in peace, there shall be no peace the Abay Tigrai of Weyane; for the Amhara are to come back to reclaim the land taken from them by Weyane. Therefore, get ready to see the Amhara heading north to reclaim their land.

The Amhara are going to reclaim their land, which is half of Begemidir, which includes HUMERA, WELQAIT, TSEGEDIA, TSELEMTI.

That is not all, the Amhara are going back to reclaim their land from Wollo, which include ENDA MEHARI, RAYA AZEBO, ALAMATA, WEFLA)

Add all this land, the "Abay Tigrai" they are dreaming of shall pushed back to original boundary; that is, reducing the size of Abay Tigrai to half. Take a look at the map above and what they got it half and that half is something which has nothing to offer.

In short, this way or that way, "Abay Tigrai" is dead on arrival. The question is do the Weyane have the wisdom to stop an unwanted war with Amhara. One thing shall be true, this way or that way, Abai Tigrai shall only pushed back to the pre-1991 boundary. The only way left for Tigray is to stop this suicidal mission and accept to live with Ethiopians.

The Abay Tigrai of Weyane, watch it for the Amhara coming to reclaim their land.

  10. Because of the land stolen from the rest of the Ethiopians, the the current map of
Tigray represents much more LARGER Tigrai than the Tigrai of pre-1991. That is fact you could not hide.

In any case, get ready for the Amhara are coming back to reclaim their land stolen in broad daylight by the Weyane. And that is for sure to come,.

By the way, the Afar of Ethiopia are also coming back to reclaim their land. After pushing back the boundary of Tigrai to the pre-1991 boundary, what you will end up is Tigrai with the rocky and barren land of Agame, Damo, Hawzien, Wuqro. Temben, Endirta, etc.

That is the Tigrai you have had and that is what you will end up, unless you went back and ask forgiveness from the Ethiopians.

Mr. Jacob, could you tell me as to why the Tigrawot are cruel and merciless? We know Tigrai is the definition of "MARIAM TIHABKUM". But does being "poor" make you hateful, mercriless, and much more bad things and behaviors. These and much more bad attitudes are the one we see from Tigray. Could you try to explain what drives the Tigrawot to be this way? I just want to know what drives you,

By the way, how long are you to repeat the false history written by you and the Amhara about Eritrea and Ethiopia. Get use to it and accept it, there was no such a thing called Ethiopia prior to 1890. Both the Eritrea and the Ethiopia we know were created at the same time and the Ethiopia you have is the creation of colonialism. Do not forget both Eritrea and Ethiopia were carved at the same time. Therefore, it time to rewrite the 3000 years of sham and none existing Ethiopia history. At very least burn all the false history written about Ethiopia by the Amhara and you.

  12. Like I said below, you won't find the answers. In fact, you are not looking for answers. I have said it before, I will say it again: Ethiopians are very limited in your knowledge about Eritrea. The little you know is gained from the propaganda your governments have been feeding you for years (since about the 1940's). You try to put that "knowledge" from propaganda with some elements of "facts" taken out of context and write and say nonsense. Add to this the deliberate attempt to debase Eritrea and Eritreans and you have nothing to talk about except the childish "Let's make them mad!" non-communication!

    ReplyDelete
  13. You seem to be pro-justice, if you are so concerned for civil Eritreans who lost their hard gained assets why don't you use your very logic for civil Ethiopians who lost their assets in Assab and spare years at Shiromeda, Janmeda ....? You see I am against any injustice but Justice is universal and for all. So Tola speaks what many Ethiopians think of. The way forward is to heal the wounds of all. We understand that Eritrea and its people are not our enemies but Shaebia is a sworn enemy , only its demise is good.

  15. For TPLF the 1998-2000 war with Eritrea was it's greatest strategic blunder. That put the end to the aspiration of Abai Tigria project.

  16. The minority apartheid regime monopolizes all aspects of the nation’s governance and has long-denied the opposition political space.

Is the PFDJ regime different than TPLF regime in power share between the ethno-religious diverse groups and in dissent political space?

  17. Eritrea is the land of Mahberawi Fithi, that is the land of "equality, fraternity, equally, liberty, social, gender, and ethnic tolerance". That is what Ethiopia needs to live in peace. But from what we see and read, Ethiopia has been balkanized beyond repair and the only thing left for the Ethiopians is to go their separate ways. That is Weyane have done so far and they are heading to the finish line; unless you the Ethiopians stopped them

The questions is, what is you as Ethiopians doing to save your country from being the next Yugoslavia. The answer is up to you as for Weyane the are heading to the finish line- to leave Ethiopia balkanized.

By the way, do not forget after Ethiopia is balkanized, the Amhara are coming to claim their Begemidir and Wolo lands.

  18. I don't think the article cares about how big or small Tigrai has become. The article is trying to insert an assertion that one region is taking another region's property idea so that regions start fighting each other. This is an old tactic over used in history; its application is outdated. If you think the readers of this article are stupid enough not to understand your assertion then you might be the only intelligent person on earth; Congratulation !!!! After all Eritrea's main goal is to divide Ethiopia to see weak Ethiopia in the longer ran so that Eritrea can prosper on expenses of Ethiopia. You see how your motive and your concern in this article contradict each other. Get real.

  19. all those colored in lands are occupied by people who speak tigringya and have been living there for hundreds of years. Would it not make sense for them to fall into tigray rather than gonder? And to claim that tigray is setting itself up to become independent is based on no fact. Shouldn't it be more of a concern if anything to address the issues and future of Eritrea and not Ethiopia?? This website has completely lost me. All this website update just to speak on Ethiopia

  23. Well, someone interfered in the establishment of the independent court that should have decided about the claims on both sides. That commission decided that both countries should pay up and Eritrea has said it will pay the $10million--the difference between what both countries should pay.

For the record, those Eritreans displaced from the Eritrean land near the boarder areas which your government is still occupying lived in make-shift shelters for several years. The government (Shaebia) has settled them in new areas.

We do not have any hatred towards the people of Tigray, either. Why don't you tell your government to leave the occupied territories so that the HEALING can begin? Situations are changing in the region. Both nations are better off making peace!

As for Shaebia, Shaebia is here to stay!
