Five Eritrean Men Arrested in Connection with Lampedusa Tragedy

Italian police arrested 5 men and issued warrants for 4 more in connection with the Lampedusa drowning incident that left 366 migrants dead in October of last year.

The five Eritrean men arrested were Tesfahiweit Woldu, 24, resident of Agrigento (Italy), Samuel Weldemicael, 26, resident of Agrigento, Salih Mohammed, 24, resident of Agrigento, Matywos Melles, 47, resident of Agrigento, and Nuredin Atta Wehabrebi, 30, resident of Agrigento.

Authorities said arrest warrants were issued for Yared Afwerke, 24, resident of Agrigento, Shamshedin Abkadt (Ethiopian), 29, resident of Milan, Ermies Ghermaye alias Ermiasnato Ghermay (Ethiopian), resident of Tripoli (Libya), and John Maharay, resident of Khartoum (Sudan).

The men are being charged with number of crimes, including crimes of conspiracy, aiding and abetting illegal immigration and residence, and human trafficking, according to reports.

Police said they intercepted thirty thousand calls after the wreck to build a case against this dangerous international human trafficking organization composed of 11 men of Eritrean, Ethiopian, Sudanese and Libyan origins.
