Ukraine Condemns Eritrea for visiting Crimea

Ukraine Condemns Eritrea for visiting Crimea

Yesterday, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press statement protesting the visit of senior Eritrean officials to Crimea which came at the invitation of the Russian Federation. The statement said:

MFA expresses its strong protest to Eritrean side over not approved by Ukraine visit on June 5-6, 2014 of Minister for Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea Osman Mohammed Saleh to the temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

Ukraine considers that visit as an unfriendly step, blatant disregard of international law by Eritrean side as well as a flagrant violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and domestic law, of the UN Charter and the UN General Assembly resolution "Territorial integrity of Ukraine" adopted on March 27, 2014, that may have deeply negative effect on further development of Ukrainian - Eritrean relations.

We call on the Eritrean side to respect strictly the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and to comply with the international law.

The irony here is it's Ukraine that seems to be uncomfortable with respecting international law. For many years, successive Kiev administrations have disrespected Eritrea's sovereignty and territorial integrity by supporting the belligerent regime in Ethiopia and turning a blind eye to its occupation of sovereign Eritrean territories.

More concerning, it was Ukraine who sold 200 T-72 tanks worth over US$100 million in one of the largest contracts signed by the country's arms exporter in more than 15 years. This contract was delivered despite extensive protest by the Eritrean Government, and with the knowledge of these weapons were likely going to be used against the Eritrean people.

So it's long overdue that Ukraine looks itself in the mirror when feeling the need to lecture nations about the virtues of adhering to international law.

  1. Ukraine can screw itself, as it is already flirting with NATO. What is good for the goose is just as good for the gander. We will not forget what it did by way of helping the dying Weyane last another day. Eritreans are magnanimous and we may forgive, but NEVER forget any crimes committed against us.

  2. First off all Crimea was never Ukraine's territory, Thanks to Nikita Khrushchev a Ukrainian born former USSR president who awarded Crimea illegally to Ukraine on February 1954.

  3. Thank u Madote Very Insightful article.

    1) Eritrea as an independent nation can and will stand, visit or acknowledge any country it so wishes. Especially like this ones where we can send a double and triple message.
    2) Ukraine as its stated in article has sold lethal weapons to our enemy. Granted the tanks are mostly old, mostly useless scrap metal standard tanks but still it did what it did. So Yes Screw Ukraine and their protesting Eritrea's visit.

Most importantly though this visit as a whole is a symbol that Eritrea is a respected Member of the new Order including Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela, etc who in reality have won the fight against Imperialism and Corporate dominance.

  9. Visiting Crimea means provoking Ukriain. Provoking ukrain at this moment means provoking EU and US, provoking EU and US at this time meand tightening the rope that in on our neck. A leadership who has respect and concern of its people wouldn't do such move but as I said before - I don't expect to get a honey from a fly.

  10. The Tigrinya proverb goes "TsiblaliE MeAkora zykedenet midri kedenet", which implies, Eritrea had never been independent, it is colonized by Rasputin like Tembiens! How come Eritrea the one which does not acknowledge even its subjected refugees play diplomacy? Disti, berrad hibey could not make it! It is a failed regime! We were told by the same regime that Russia was the enemy of Eritrean people for it supported the Dergue - it was presented as a crocodile - it is a shame to see wedi berrad dancing with crocodiles again! Shame shame shame!

  12. Where is Z cruise,,, actually in am glad you brought the issue of provoking , you see what you have just done to yourself? Exposing your cowardic stand . You are so coward that you still hoping a mercy from EU, USA or else. What kind of message do you think this will send to the whole world especially to the US? I don't know if it concerns you but I would like to remind you that it is because of the US blessings that the puppet government in Addis ababa had ignored an international law in respect to illegal and in lawful occupation of sovergin Eritrean territories. The law is the law my friend if the US want everyone to respect the international law they should have done so ten years ago in Bademe.

  14. "negative effect on further development of Ukrainian - Eritrean relations", very interesting comment. The Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group claimed that Eritrean MIG 29 where getting serviced in Ukrain did Ukraine provide the Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group with some information that upset Eritrea? may be Yes may be NO.
Further more what was the role of Ukraine and Russia during the 1998 war with Ethiopia?I might be wrong but as far as I know the Ukrainian where providing training for Eritrean pilots and the Russians where supporting the Ethiopians with pilots, trainers, advisers and both of them done it for money.

  15. Ukraine and its conflicts none of our business. Russia, similar to the western countries and China, has only own interest in mind not that of Eritrea. If Ethiopia wants to buy military hardware from Russia, the I am sure that Russia won't object to it too.

  16. Kunama zmesl AmbasadorJune 13, 2014 at 3:16 AM

That was exactly, what I was thinking. Well Eritrea may use Russia's support against sanctions and to do something about its dilapidated military hard ware / economy.

But the question is again... what will be the next Ethiopian move on this matter? What about EU? US? Ukraine etc...

What about if Ukraine takes it to the next level, so that it does not only condemen but also accusses Eritrea on relevant EU, AU and UN bodies and other podiums vis- à- vis Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Will that improve the image of Eritrea?

On the other hand is it only a matter of Birds of the same feather
flock together :) South Ossetia, Crimea, Abkhazia and Eritrea? (by the
way do the Russians believe Eritrea is on that neveau?)

Too many questions but nowadays the Grand question is **Where is your Brother Caine?**

Bros war is not good at all .I agree with u .u sead we got what u wanted we could have got it will out a war . its not war what we gave us its from court that we got it if u think that we got same thing if u had responsible gaverment we wouldn't suffered thise much . we eritreans started the war the court asked us to pay a compensation to Ethiopia higdef agreed to that .what I seas up is all true .Ethiopian army enterd and attacked higdef army several time what dose it shows u weakness lol but Ethiopia has no interest to go to war they are battling a poverty war they are rebuilding their country .the reason they cannot withdraw from Eritrea territory is there have to be normalazation relashion acourding the international norm .then dialogue .it was not a border war because the border proplem was there since 1991 why we invaded them with tanks 1998 . so there should be a political solution .Ethiopia will not lose any thing from cold war since Ethiopia is big and can use 3 ports as we wittnes its economy is boasting .its we are suffering as we all see .its not a matter of immotion leader ship needs wisdom not immotion higdef leases lucks wisdom that is why they ended with shame. Sanctions. Exodus hunger no rule of low and normal life we are declining like we never before .as u call me tigraway I would have been proud to be the one but unfortunately I am eritrean but God forbid I am neither symperizer of higdef or higdef

  21. Even if what you say is right, what you saying is that every shop keeper whom i bought my apparels is my friend? buying amd selling is not making or loosing friends just a mere transaction b/n two parties, and diplomacy is another kettle of fish.

  22. The Ukrainians did not sell the fighter planes to Eritrea they only provided Instructors either way even if they had sold they wouldn't not do it out of sympathy but pure cash it was simply business.

    ReplyDelete
  23. First off, where have u been for last 8 yrs??? Eritrea can not buy any sizable weapons...due to the sanction .
Secondly: wht am saying is Ukraine Gov , which is illegitimate by the way, is a puppet for the imperialists which are our main roadblock to living peacefully. Ethiopia is nothing but a small puppy while the controllers r those who put the now gov party in power in Ukraine. So either way Ukraine isn't considered friendly in my books.
Most Importantly : I am proud of our Gov honest and unbiased stand, same with India, China, Russia who all have openly accepted Crimean.

Its People like who rather give up their Soul and sell out their ppl and country for a swiss bank account and bring chaos to their country. Wake up man.

  25. It is a bit more than a business. you don't get many countries who sells you arms as well as experts. rumor has it Ukrainian and Russian fighters engaged in both side of the fight as mercenaries.

at the time Russia refused to send flight instructors to Eritrea because it was giving the same service to Ethiopia and didn't want to engage in two side of the war. So Ukraine stepped up. Dear wake up that is what we call friendship in diplomacy, it doesn't mean you go to date and cinema hand in hand.
