Eritrean-American Nat Berhe Says NYPost Misquoted him on Ethiopia

Eritrean-American Nat Berhe Says NYPost Misquoted him on Ethiopia

When the the New York Giants drafted Nat Berhe, Eritreans were excited and proud to see a confident young man who is proud of his Eritrean-American roots make it to the NFL. However, after the New York Post published an article about Berhe, which quoted him saying some controversial things about his origin, some Eritreans didn't know what to make of it. Berhe allegedly said:

“I’ll be the first Ethiopian player to play in the National Football League,” said Berhe (pronounced Bur-HEY). “That’s huge for me and huge for my family and huge for the people in Ethiopia. It’s a big feat. Not a lot of people from East Africa are in the National Football League. I look at it all the same, Ethiopia, Eritrea, it’s all the same, just different name.”

The quote left Eritreans a bit disappointed and puzzled. The title says he's the first Eritrean to be in the NFL, yet the article contradicts the title by quoting him as saying he's the first Ethiopian. Even more troubling, the alleged quote about Ethiopia and Eritrea being the "same", just different names didn't sit too well with Eritreans. Annoyed by the quote, many young Eritreans took to Twitter to make their voices heard.

But was that what Berhe really said?

According to Berhe, who responded to a private Facebook query of Seble Ephrem from London, this was a misquote. He said:
"I said I was Eritrean because I am. I said the support I've gotten from East Africans generally and Eritreans specifically has been great. That was it."

Berhe also took to Twitter to add:

His older brother, Tam Berhe, who recently graduated from law school, says it was a misquote, too. He says his brother didn't say Eritreans and Ethiopians are the same, rather "he meant the support is the same." And when asked about the claim that Berhe allegedly said he was an Ethiopian to the reporter, he explained "he was obviously misquoted."

To be fair, Berhe has been vocal about his Eritrean-American identity, which supports his and his brother's claim that it was a misquote on the reporters part. Misquotes do happen in the media more often than we think, particularly when the subject is about countries most Americans have limited knowledge on.

At any rate, this incident should serve as a reminder that not everything we read or see in the media is true. It should also serve as a reminder that we shouldn't rush to judgement or criticize people based on a quote, especially when it contradicts their actions. As the old adage goes, actions always speak louder than words, even misquoted ones.

  1. We should not be surprised with the misquotation; the Secretary of State, Kerry, did it with the 2014 Boston Marathon winner, Meb Keflezgi. He said that he was of Kenyan origin. And it may not be a real and honest misquotation. Nevertheless, we must never give to such nonsense undue importance.

  2. A lot of people don't know Eritrea. Eritrea is a new small country. when a lot of people think of east Africa the first thing that comes to mind is Ethiopia. It is not meant to offend Eritrean people when people are mistaking Eritrea for Ethiopia. The football player was trying to be political correct when he was giving the interview. We Ethiopians are going to like him if he is a good player, a good person. We, all Ethiopian, wish him success in the NFL. We understand the political correctness he tried to emanate , which is a sign of maturity

  3. There is something going on to discredit Eritrea and Eritreans. It should only make us stronger. No one can win by telling lies. The truth always comes out, and the cream always rises to the top. Let's just keep on winning Eri. When they can't bit us, they will join us.

  4. He is half Eritrean and born and raised in America.

The sooner you meet the reality that significant percentage of those born in the diaspora will loose connections to Eritrea the better.

Our government does nothing to entice folks like Nat Berhe and others like him to visit Eritrea. No one wants visit a country that is associated with factual human right abuses.

Nat Berhe has indicated "I have a policy, I do not venture into discussions of politics, world affairs or religion."

He is only 22 years old so leave him to focus on his NFL career.

  6. The New York Post is a tabloid with no journalistic standards. They do this all the time. They deliberately misquote people or attribute quotes that were never uttered. They have done it to everyone. Honestly, I would expect something like that from The NY Post. That is just what they do.
Having said that, Nat Berhe is Eritrean obviously and he even tweeted wondering whether he was the first Eritrean in the NFL. He is half Eritrean and half black American so there is no way that he could be Ethiopian or think of himself as Ethiopian. Let's leave it at that and wish him all the best! If he happens to receive good wishes from Ethiopians and wants to acknowledge that, that is absolutely fine.
Most of all, let us all wish him success in the NFL and good health. He has made us proud just by making it to the NFL because it is not easy to get selected.

  8. 1, The first question a foreigner would make to an Eritrean is if he is an Ethiopian.

2, The first question an Ethiopian would make to an Eritrean is if he is from Mekelle(Tigray).

CONCLUSSION: Eritreans will never be recognized by anybody as citizens of this artificial land called Eritrea as they have an Ethiopian blood in their vessels. lol

  9. This is good lesson for Eritreans who call themselves for HABESHA :)
For me all they call themselves HABESHA are from nomansland with lot of complex and identity crises. HABESHAS will always remain in between without any rights in both countries. Make sure you are either Ethiopian or Eritrean not to regret your choice later on like those tgray people who try to be whatever calling themselves Natsnet, luwam, Haben and so on to Eritreanise themselves and some of them try to call themselves some oromo names infiltrate to those tribes with no shame, unbelievable LOL

  12. Eritreans are HABESHA. Someone who denies must be sick or must have some kind of subtle and stealth goal. May be to dismantle the very identity of the the people. Only some crazy OLFites, ONLFites and SHABIAS say this. The rest of the people( ETHIOPIANS, ERITREANS) identify themselves with pride as HABESHA.

  13. Noway ! Thanks to my fallen heroes I am PROUD ERITREAN !!!!
So why I should I identify myself as a mixed race with their killers ???

I guess you've been absent from the country and it's affairs for quite sometime my friend...We're proud of Nat as an Eritrean-American...we're happy that he's happy but beyond that i think it should be upto Nat...anyway he's still young and he's excited to be in the NFL, we're ( Eritreans) all happy and excited...and let him enjoy his life and career..good luck Nat.

  15. No, actually, he was misquoted. He said so himself, why would he lie? After all, whose more credible here: Nat Berhe or a quote from a journalist that probably doesn't even know where Eritrea or Ethiopia was prior to this article? But I understand, seeing that you are Ethiopian, this is a bitter pill for you to swallow, so continue with your elaborate theories as to why he would state he isn't Ethiopian when he ISN'T ETHIOPIAN!

The only time he doesn't talk about bashing Eritrea and its government is when he takes time to defend Ethiopia and the Ethiopian government. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, it's.....

  18. We are proud of Nat Berhe!! We love you and will be supporting you 110%! Thank you for clarifying who you are! A lot of Ethiopians were using these misquotes to attack the Eritrean identity and Eritrea's sovereignty! So thank you for ending their hate parade. =)

  20. His father name is Berhe Asfaha, his brothers name is Tamrat, his name is Nathaniel. I honestly do not care one or the other if he is Ethiopian trying to use Eritrean name or his father is a Eritrean who believes in Andinet hence his son Nat saying that. And if it is the NY Post "misquoting", then we all know that Geopolitics are even Present in the NFL (SADLY, whatever or whomever Nat identifies as, it won't matter just like many of us in Other Professions and our interactions with Westerners and Foreigners are Misidentified either through Callous Neglect or Indifferent Concern, or Intentional Offensiveness, we shouldn't let their Small minds bother us. It is upto Nat to do what is right for him and if he believes whatever he believes, then we will respond accordingly:

    1. If he believes, he is ethiopian then please Nat do not mention Eritrea or Eritreans.

    2. If he says he is Eritrean, then he needs to Always Remind and Inform anyone who mentions Ethiopian or Ethiopia in question in the Future. Whoever interviewed him and the Editor who wrote that "misquotation" ie "direct journalistic scamming" on this Nat individucal, should face some repercussions and Nat should take it up and infact Never Interview with the NY Post or any News media which Misquotes him!

  21. Actually for your number 2,

Ethiopians ie Amharas and Oromos refer to Tigrayans as Komata Tigray and to Eritreans as either "Anceba or Hammasien"..

Amhara are smart enough to recognize a person with Lice on their head like you Agames and a person with a CLEAN Head like an Eritrean, even though they are limited in their knowledge of our Awrajatat, they atleast recognize a Komal infested Agame versus a Clean Headed Eritrean!

In addition, Amhara/Oromo, know Eritreans work and do not beg like you Komal infested Tigrayan Agames!

You are just hoping." are you for real? what planet do you live in? i advise you to stop chewing that hallucinogenic drug ... every Agame when i first meet them, they always tell me that they are from Eritrea but now as i know how to spot them i don't let them get away with it.. it happen to me on daily bases in Europe, also experienced it in America, Canada, Egypt, Uganda, Debai ... and its always funny when i point it out to them and tell them to stop lying, then they start talking about how we are the same, we are brothers.... no never Gold is Gold it can't be anything else but Gold, and cloth is just cloth it could never by the rules of the universe be Gold... of course you could create an illusion of Gold by painting it, but it will always be just a low grade imitation = Agame!!

  26. No difference in external features between Ethiopians and Eritreans at all. Only a forensic doctor after an autopsy would tell the difference between a Tigraian and an Eritrean. Eritreans have one kidney. That is pathognomonic( an medical identifying feature typical of any Eritrean corpse). lol

It is fair to say Nat Berhe has learned his lesson and is going to be super cautious talking to the media about stuff in general. He will probably make sure that he is not going to be misquoted again not just about his heritage but also about stuff in general. He will be selective with the people he talks to or gives interviews to. This is baptism by fire. Welcome to the NFL! .

I can’t be proud of Eritrea government actions as long as I know how it has been achieved.

non-habesha people in Eritrea( Rashaida(Arabs), Hedareb Beni-Amirs(Sudanese), the HadHarem(from Yemen). But, the Sahos, Tigres, Kebessas, e.t.c. are HABESHAS.

  84. "i believe your people are known as the 'House niggers'".That statement only perpetuates hate and racism. I personally see all africans and caucasians to be the same, honestly. I am not the one to judge. Please don't complex the Christianity faith as it confuses people; yes,the enemies of god are technically your enemies but i believe it's the bible that says if your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink (proverbs). I feel like you already knew that but wanted to use the bible as leeway to prove your point.
