Qatar Airways Delegation Arrived in Eritrea

Qatar Airways aims to make Asmara its 21st African destination

Qatar Airways Delegation arrived in Eritrea

Qatar Airways delegation arrived in Asmara to discuss its plans to start direct flights to Eritrea, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The visit is a strong indication that Qatar Airways is closer to making Asmara its 21st African destination, an observer noted.

News the Doha-based airliner is going to start flights to Eritrea was first announced in November by Simon Teklesenbet, an official working for the Eritrean Embassy in Qatar.

  1. Let the good news keep coming!

This is great news because prices to Eritrea have been ridiculously high due to lack of competition from carriers. With Qatar Airways joining and Turkish Airlines to follow after, airline prices to Eritrea should fall in the coming months.

  2. Is Eritrean Airlines still in service?

  3. Nope. Eritrean Airlines is extinct. Thanks to your stupid government ahaha

  4. What happen to Lufthansa? Lufthansa was providing an excellent service for the past 10 plus years. Eventhoug the price was high, comparing to the shitty service Egypt and Yemany air was providing, it was worth the price.

  5. Is this for 2015?

Currently planning trip for July and only option to book is through Cairo?

Until they announce flight details I consider this false news.

  7. Rising cost of fuel and other expenses are making airliners such as Lufthansa cut back on many destinations in Africa in order stay profitable. After 51 years of flying to Sudan, they recently ended their services to Khartoum (for more, read the bottom article).

I think the reason Lufthansa suspended its flights to Eritrea had to do with their contract ending. Negotiations were underway last month but they failed because Lufthansa is being extremely unreasonable with its demands.

IMO, I think Qatar Airways is better and more affordable than Lufthansa.

German airline Lufthansa, the last European carrier with direct flights to Sudan, will end its service in January, a company document obtained on Sunday says, citing economic reasons.

Flights between Frankfurt and Khartoum will end on January 19, says a letter to clients signed by Hartmut Volz, the airline's Sudan general manager.

"Lufthansa offers its customers an extensive worldwide network and regularly monitors its profitability," it says.

"In this context it was decided to suspend services from Frankfurt to Khartoum."

The move comes after 51 years of service to Sudan, an industry source told AFP.

Early this year the Dutch airline KLM ended direct flights between Amsterdam and Khartoum, citing rising costs.

The Sudanese capital is still served by Turkish Airlines as well as by some African and Middle Eastern carriers.

  8. This is a big misconception. Eritrean Airlines is still in service. It flies to and from the Middle East and other African destinations. If you take the time to visit the link below, you can see Saudi tourists boarding Eritrean Airlines in Jeddah in late November: http://travel.maktoob.com/vb/travel884044/

  9. A delegation from Qatar Airways is in Asmara, this is not false. Qatar Airways hasn't started flights to Asmara yet but it will this year.

  11. It is unfortunateo that Lufthansa service to Asmara got terminated. Now we have the unforunate situation that Egypt Air as the only service to Asmara are profitiering to the maximum, almost doubled the fare to 1,200 british pounds for off peak flight (March - April). It is a tragic as many Eritreans would not be able to afford such rediculous amount!

  12. Thanks for the learned input. If after 51 years of service Lufthansa decided to stop its flights to Khartoum is more of an indication that the company has decided to cut back on its services to the region. I applaud the Qatari Airlines for moving in to take advantage of this lucrative market, not to mention the benefits derived from regional cooperation.

  17. It's great and all that we have Qatar starting flights to Adi soon, but i'm still disappointed on the lack of transparency of the reason why Lufthansa isn't operating. They have not yet said they stopped flying to Eritrea and as far as i know they have huge demand and for them to stop the flight to Adi is a high revenue loss but again what saddens me the most is the fact no one really knows what the cause is and we keep saying they are no good or expensive now that they don't fly but enjoyed their services with no complaint when they were operating, not to mention the praise for Qatar and Turkish which we don't even know how well they will serve us is deafening as suppose to Lufthansa's immaculate repetition over the course of the years. Thus, lets not get emotional and make a reliable assessment to a valid conclusion. FYI, i'm not spokes person for Lufthansa this is just my opinion.

  21. This so called Afar person's IP address says he's from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. You're probably talking to an Amhara or a Tigrayan man with too much time on his hands at an internet cafe.

  22. I neither agree nor disagree with your point Lela, but first of all, the transparency should be two way, the airlines should be clear what their factors for doing business are. In spite of any regulation pressed by the Government, they are external actors and should be open about their terms. Since they are quiet, my guess would be they are reserving any comment because they foresee a future possibility of opening service. I would however, disagree with you about the lack of complaints about Lufthansa; comments on the internet and even anecdotal evidence that prices were high and respectfulness to customers was poor. As far as Qatar and Turkish, I have never flown on either, but both are higher ranked (http://www.worldairlineawards.com/awards_2013/airline2013_top20.htm) airlines as far as service quality than Lufthansa, I would expect service quality to be commensurate with that ranking.

  23. My dear red sea the one which is under Eritrean territory it belongs to Eritrea, which has 9 ethnics groups, not to afar in red sea.... If you want to be independent then go and join to your other group members who re in Ethiopia or Djibouti.
Even if u seek for your freedom you won't get it. Look at the majority of afar population in Eritrea its 480,000 out 6.2 millions which means only 7.7% of the population....wake up and stop dreaming or dream something else!

  25. Hi Merhawie, Regardless of the hidden agendas or some external factors, we the people deserve to at least know what's going on and i'm not sure where the transparency lies. The complaint i was referring is mainly from us "Eritreans" since we usually have worse experiences with third world airlines, the complaint on Lufthansa from us i'm sure doesn't exceed 1% at the same time, when i check most comments most people refer Qatar and Turkish as the greatest thing that has happened to Eritrea without having to see their performance which i'm specifically opposing to that. Let's not kick something when it's down, and praise what we don't know. I have had a bad experience with Turkish before including many people i know.

  26. Airlines around the globe are in their most widespread financial crises since 2008 economy melt down. Therefore, many airlines to avoid bankruptcy reduce its flight and laid off employees in the face expected weak demand in the future. So, it ain't big deal Lufthansa to stop its flight to Asmara. Sorry haters.
