Is Wedi Tikabo Eritrea's Version of the Dixie Chicks?

Struggling singer Wedi Tikabo (the man with the flowers) befriends convicted criminals in a bid to stay relevant. The overweight man second from the far left is Solomon Assefaw, who is the wring leader off a violent Ethiopian-backed criminal organization. Solomon, including the thin-faced man on the far right, Bemnet Mesfen, and the man without a hat in the far back,  Fitsum Arefaine, are the three men who were convicted of vandalizing the Eritrean Community Culture Civic Center in Oakland. These criminals are now Wedi Tikabo's friends and business partners.

Is Wedi Tikabo Eritrea's Version of the Dixie Chicks?

On March 10th, 2003, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks stood in front of a crowd at Shepherd’s Bush Empire Theatre in London, and uttered these now infamous words:

“Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.”

The comments, which were made 10 days before the beginning of the Iraq War, resulted in one of the biggest boycotts in the history of American music. The backlash took the Dixie Chicks from the biggest concert draw in country music to relative obscurity in a matter of weeks.

In making the comments, the Dixie Chicks forgot who their core fans were. The country music scene is filled with patriotic Americans who are proud of their country and troops. Wrong or right, their fans felt the Dixie Chicks betrayed their country at a time when they needed to rally around the flag.

Like the Dixie Chicks, Yohannes "Wedi" Tikabo seems to have forgotten who his core fans are, too. After completing the Hade Libna USA Tour last summer with fellow musicians Dawit Shilan, Zeineb Beshir and Melekin Atombes, Yohannes decided he needed to extend his time in America by claiming asylum, while his compatriots went back home in disbelief of his selfish behavior.

Months later, Yohannes disappointed his former fans again after giving an interview with Amanuel Iyassu, a highly controversial person who works closely with the Ethiopian regime. During his interview, he gave long-winded answers to simple questions that left people puzzled as what to make of his ramblings.

Despite Yohannes giving the interview with Amanuel, many Eritreans still felt he wasn't genuine with his new found grievances, and that he was putting on a show to get his asylum papers approved. Other Eritreans who claimed asylum before him, including most of the Eritrean soccer players who defected a few years ago, ended up to be staunch government supporters once their papers were approved in the West. However, Yohannes has shown his objectives are far more sinister than just gaming the immigration system.

On Friday, Yohannes was spotted in the Bay Area with convicted criminals Solomon Assefaw, Fitsum A. Ghebreegziabher aka Fitsum Arefaine, and Bemnet Mesfen, who were all found guilty in a California Superior Court for vandalizing the Eritrean Community Cultural Civic Center  in Oakland.

Video of Solomon, Fitsum and Bemnet vandalizing ECCCC in Oakland, California:

If the old adage of 'show me your friends and I will show you your future' still holds true, then Yohannes is destined to be like the criminals he is surrounding himself with. Whether we like to acknowledged it or not, our friends have a strong influence on the type of people we become, and Yohannes will not be the exception to this rule.

In contrast to the reaction of American fans of the Dixie Chicks, Eritrean fans have largely been indifferent to Yohannes' 15 seconds of 'me time'. Most Eritreans have been very respectful to a man that is now openly working with people that have physically and financially harmed their countrymen. But there is one area the Eritrean diaspora and American country music fans share the same approach and that's through the power of boycott.

For fans, there is nothing more effective in showing their disdain towards a musician than boycotting them and their work. Even for the most arrogant divas who live on cloud nine, a boycott of their music will bring them down to earth faster than gravity. Ultimately, this is the price Yohannes will pay for sleeping in bed with sworn enemies of the Eritrean people. The change he naively thinks he can bring by singing in dusty bar rooms for middle aged criminals will not come to Eritrea but to to his wallet.

While it is true that the Yohannes is the furthest thing from the Dixie Chicks in terms of music genres and styles, his career will take a similar path. Not only will Yohannes' career fade into obscurity but he himself will become a social pariah among the Eritrean diaspora. When you betray the people that help you become who you are, you are ultimately betraying yourself.

Peace!

  1. Ato awet. It is not about choosing to staying in US. It is about who's he associated with. And what he was singing yesterday. He is a flip flop. With no direction.

Happy holidays to you and your family members. My point is and was, we, Eritreans, are too busy assassinating characters. Once again, I am not in a position to judge him nor is anyone. He is a grown man, let him hang with cats and dogs if he wants to.

As to what he was singing yesterday, I haven't heard it so I can't comment on it.
    one again, happy holidays brother!

  4. This isn't about judging anyone. Wedi Tikabo's decision to work and befriend men that have attacked innocent Eritreans says more about his character than anything else. This is like a nun preaching about the virtues of celibacy to children but befriends and works with prostitutes that have sex with minors. What kind of nonsense is this?

Please don't use that lame excuse of if you love Eritrea so much, why don't you go live in it. It's simple buddy. It's for the same reasons why the millions of American Jews who love Israel so much, but don't live in it. It's for the same reason with the millions of American-Germans, Swedes, Norwegians, etc and others who love their country but don't chose to live there. The point is people can not just leave everything behind and move to a country to start over, regardless if they love that country and speak good of it.

If people want to insult and belittle Wedi Tikabo, then all they have to do is play his new song.

Madote.com: This article has been posted on the Eritrean Youth Solidarity for change, a Facebook group in which illiterate fobs come together to make plans to attack Eritreans in the diaspora. They are telling each other to come here show support to their new "hero", whom they spent the last ten years calling a short "Agame" and an alcoholic. You can tell them apart from other Eritreans by their poor grammar and heavy use of "kkkkkkk"; the ultimate trademark of a fob.

As for that bald and ugly Solomon Assfuck character, you're gonna pay for your crimes fat ass. Just wait fat boy, revenge is coming for you.

absurd beyond any measure of logic and reasonable contrast. Standing up for
rule of law and justice in the face of opposition even from fanatic supporters
of any merciless regime is a noble act deserving respect and honour.Great
leaders such as Nelson Mandela ,Dr.King , Mahatma Gandhi to name few have all paid dear price for
freedom and justice. Dixie Chicks took a
heroic stand opposing a war the whole word regarded as unjust and they were
proud of it,even if it meant loosing popularity, or risking their career for a
    noble cause.

    But
venom filled PFDJ supporters give little regard for justice, human rights and
libery an inherited disease from the cold blooded dictator who is ruling
Eritrea with Iron fist. They would put their self interest giving a cold
shoulder to the Eritrean people’s suffering under the PFDJ repressive regime.
Eritrea doesn’t equal PFDJ.knowing this simple concept would have saved you
from being herded to a slaughtering machine of Isaiase.

History will judge the indispicable crime
perpetuated by suppressive PFDJ regime and its supporters against innocent
Eritreans who languish inside Eritrea, the Sinai, and Mediterranean Sea.

Wedi Tikabo is not or was not a significant person in the lives of Eritrean, folks we're not talking about a scientist or an intellectual scholar here, he's just another poor street performer. Anyways, as for the gangs who vandalize community centers, just go after them with AK's and shotguns, raid their rat hole and finish them. These are bunch of Bantu race monkeys. 25. I'm honestly not down with the comparison because The Iraq War was a total sham and the US had absolutely no legitimate reason to enter Iraq, not for reasons of defense nor for "diplomacy"; it was imperialism at it's finest. Eritrea is anti-imperialism. And our security problems are ON our OWN turf, i.e. Algiers-peace agreement, unjustified sanctions, and despite that we are still absolutely PEACEFUL while still fighting to get international justice, UNLIKE the Iraq War which just killed tens of thousands of people for oil and regional hegemony. Second from what I've had interpreted (beles here, sue me) he wasn't against the govt's decisions in what he said, he was just ambiguous and dumb for his choice of outlet, unlike clearly opposing the Iraq War like the Dixie Chicks and questioning the president's identity.

So those are the main things I want people to realize while reading this, to avoid coming to the conclusion of Bush-like/Texan hillbilly thinking. The point is Wedi Tikabo is skating on thin ice and as the author alluded to, with stupid, aimless, loose canons as his company, it's only a matter of time before he falls through and struggles to swim in the waters of frigid delusions.

I always want to find a media that is neutral but it seems to be hard this days! Radio Erena seem to be better so far than any Eri Media out there although i still think they are a bit too much too. And as to wedi Tikabo, I think he is not a kid to judge him and decide whats best for him. Lets not act childish..

I think fear has pushed him towards those people and not knowing their back ground may have made things worst, meaning no point of return, however he chooses to pursue the rest of hia musical career is upto him and all he had is that an artosy who expressed his interpretation of the audiouses feeling. Here he will have to find an audions that will dance to his tunes. I couldn't say that Wedi Tikabo is taking a detour to the disgruntled weyane's cronies, the so-called opposition groups because I missed his interview with weyane's media. One thing that bothered me, if Wedi Tikabo hanging out with those three guys who vandalized the ECC in Oakland California he is taking a premature short cut to hell. Before we bombarded him with sever criticism and boycotting his concert we should help him to get asylum and guide him to be a productive citizen as often.
I can give a good example about Eritrean singer in mid 80. I with held his name because he is in his twilight. I call him X singer. X singer was from my hood Keftegna ShweAte. When some of Eritrean singer joined the arm struggle and some of them escaped to Europe and Middle East, X singer remained in Asmara he was active participant in Kebelei Kinet. X singer was forced young Eritrean girls to join the kebelei kinet and ended up a sex slaves for Derg cadres and security personals ( yehizb dehinent or death squad). This tragedy happened in my own hood. I decided to discus with two urban fighters(wufuyat) how to stop X singer and thugs their pimping job. I was chosen to give the first X finger the first warning. After meticulous surveillance, one day while X singer socializing with his three yehizb dehinet in Bar Caravan, I approached them as postcard (cartelina) seller. I separated the postcard with the warning letter. The three yehizb dehninet pick up their favorite three postcards and paid me 10.50 Birr. I said hi to papa X singer and gave him the postcard with the warning letter in the face of those three death squads. When X singer opened his postcard and read the warning letter, he was shocked totally. He excused the death squad and followed me outside Bar Caravan. He tried his best to intimidate me. He asked me who send me to give him the warning letter. I told X singer, if you have any question regarding this warning letter ask my dad, X singer met my dad with fear in his eyes. My dad told him if you don't want stop what you are doing to your own hood, you will receive two more warnings. After three warnings deqina (tegadelti) will hang you up side down in Mai Bella and you will be consumed by rats. X singer, after first warning realized the damage that caused to young Eritrean girls and stopped right away and became a father figure to my hood. X singer still living in Asmara with dignity and respect. He is in his twilight.
Wedi Tikabo he smart Asmarino like X singer. Let's give him time to explore the good, the bad, and the ugly. If wedi Tikabo sympethised with enemy of Eritrea, then we could give him all the shit a store could hold it.

What you really missed it, Wedi Tuquaqbo loves his people and his country -Eritrea. Go and listen properly to his first interview with Assena. It was an eye opening for him, when he saw some government stooges were dancing around ,while other Eritreans were mourning on their loved ones-who lost their precious lives in Lampadusa. At the end, you mentioned that because he is standing against the dictatorial regime, you are going to boycott from buying his music. Very laughable !!. But what you failed to understand is, at this time the number of Eritreans opposing the regime is growing and the number of the dictator supports is shrinking. Only, idiot people are left out with the regime. Hopefully, one day you will get it, otherwise you will be left out with DEMHIT !! Ha Ha Ha !!

People leaving the country are not "defectors." They are escaping tyranny, they are not defecting against their beloved Eritrea or its people. They are defecting against the WRONGS that keep prevailing. These people paid to secure their country with their sweat, blood and lives.
Who are you to judge these bravehearts?! What gives you the right and authority to "appear" more nationalist than these people, while you dwell in the luxury and liberties of the west. Most of these people would not make all of their sacrifice in vain by harming Eritrea even after they leave. It is the country they paid dearly to secure. They many not support the way the country is being run, but that does not mean they are defectors. The same goes for Yohannes Tiquabo. So refrain from judgement and condemnation of this proud ERITREAN, who has probably done more for his country that any of you who are stoning him.

  66. What this article does best is to totally deceive the uninformed and the politically immature sector of the society. The writer applies and latter reenforces his belief with his philosophy telling us whom we should fashionably considered as a true Eritrean. The writer quotes the interview Wedi Tikabo gave to an anti-government news outlet and uses a picture to justify an intent of his negative propaganda / PR.

Unlike the writer of this article, Wedi Tikabo has proved his patriotism and commitment to Eritrea through his service to the nation both in times of peace and war. He might have had many ups and downs through out his career as a musician and also being in the national army. His ability to unite people through music was so invaluable at one time that some of us started considering to put his name along side Abraham Afework and Yemane Baria.

However a minute he finds himself out of favour with some, he suffered the same fate as many Eritreans did before him, which is to be labelled Agame. Some Eritreans believe in the notion of either you are with us or you are aginst us hence "AGAME" as if Tigray people from the Agame region do not deserve to be treated as perfect human beings.

Like any one of us Wedi Tikabo has the right to voice his concern regardless where he lands either the right, left or even centre side of the Eritrean political spectrum. To be continued...
