New Sudanese-Eritrean highway reduces road travel

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and his Sudanese counterpart Omar al-Bashir on Sunday inaugurated the first phase of a 400 kms highway from Port Sudan to Karora.

The new highway will reduce travel significantly between the two towns, going from 1200km (745 miles) with the previous connection to 400km (248 miles).

During their lengthy meeting, the presidents also agreed to boost cooperation in agriculture, energy, trade, tourism, transport and to further enhance cultural ties among the people.

"The borders drawn by the colonialists will not be a barrier to prevent communication between our two brotherly peoples," said al-Bashir.

As part of promoting regional integration in the Horn of Africa, entry visas between Eritrea and Sudan were abolished in 2011. Citizens seeking to enter each respective countries are only required to carry an ID card.
