H.E. Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed wrote a thank you letter to H.E. President Isaias Afwerki following their successful and historic summit in Asmara. The following is the full text of the letter:

His Excellency  President Isaias Afwerki 
President of the State of Eritrea 
Asmara 

Your Excellency, I have returned to Addis Ababa elated with the historic breakthrough we have made in our sincere effort to bring a lasting peace between our two nations. I am immensely encouraged by the great strides we were able to take and the mutual trust and friendship we quickly forged.

I am truly grateful for the incredibly heartfelt reception and hospitality extended to me and my delegation during our visit. I am also touched and humbled by the overwhelming love, warmth and joy with which the good people of Eritrea received us.

We can now confidently say that we have effectively closed a bitter and destructive chapter in our two nations' histories that had lasted way too long. The Government of Ethiopia is deeply appreciative of the cooperation and readiness that your Government has shown to make this historic milestone possible.

The peoples of Ethiopia and Eritrea are eager for peace and normalization of relations between the two nations. What we have achieved during this summit is to bring to reality our peoples' hopes and dreams.

My Government is keen to implement the terms we laid out in our Joint Declaration so as to quickly make up for lost opportunities and create even better ones for our people. I sincerely hope and believe that the process we have started will continue with the same enthusiasm and energy as was evident during this summit.

I look forward to continue working with you and to further deepen our engagement. It is my earnest hope that our efforts will lay the foundation for a positively inter-twined and bright future for our two nations.
