Team MTN-Qhubeka has received recognition from the highest office in South Africa for their achievements at the Tour de France so far.
President Jacob Zuma has conveyed his message of congratulations to Africa’s first professional cycling team at the event.
The team has exceeded expectations in their first tour, winning a stage, having one of their riders wear the polka dot jersey for king of the mountain and being ranked the best team after four stages.
Zuma expressed great pride in the team winning stage 14 in Mende, as the victory came on Nelson Mandela’s birthday last weekend.
To go with their stage win, MTN Qhubeka’s Eritrean rider, Daniel Teklehaimanot, became the first African to have the honour of wearing the polka dot jersey for being the best mountain climber, a feat the president also applauded.
