Politicizing a Human Tragedy A la “The Opposition” Style

By Bruh Tesfa

Last Saturday May 16th, 2015 as I pull into the parking lot of the venue to join my compatriots in celebrating  Eritrean Independence I was astounded with dismay to encounter a handful people on the corner of the street with dim lights holding what appeared to be the old Eritrean flag and chanting something I couldn’t make a sense out of. On the ground not far from where these “protesters” stood lay two burial boxes , presumably to symbolize the migrants who drowned off of Mediterranean Sea in recent months.

And here I’m insensitive to those who met death tragically, fully devoid of any compassion passing by the box to party without a pause. Shame on me! But my inner feeling was in no mood to entertain any sense of guilt the people in the street were trying to instill in a futile hope of disrupting the event. So I chose to keep going with even greater determination to be part of the joyous occasion. And, I’m glad that I did. After all, this was not the kind of party one participates for a mere self-gratification. It was a very important holiday reserved once a year to commemorate Eritrea’s Independence day.

Let me put things in perspective before I go on to make my point. Everyone knows that May 24 is Eritrea’s official Independence Day, a holiday which has been celebrated with great zeal for 24 years. Politics aside, May 24th denotes the day in which the enemies of Eritrea, those who subjected the Eritrean people to horrendous sufferings for over three decades were defeated, surrendered and sent home packing never to return. It’s also the day that made it possible for Eritrean families that were scattered every where as a result of foreign occupation and oppression for decades to rejoin and rejoice. This holier than Holy day May 24th is also the day that reminds us all that the huge sacrifice of our brothers and sisters, cousins and uncles, nephews and niece, mothers and fathers in the liberation of Eritrea from shackles of colonialism did not go in vain.

Sometimes I lose words as I try to make some sense out of the silly acts our “opposition” groupies engage in to discredit Eritrean government. And interestingly, the more they engage in such silly behaviors the more their inner motives are exposed. And this one where they go around celebration sites, shedding “crocodile tears” and intimidating people and preventing them from celebrating their hard-earned independence, takes the cake.

It’s quite natural for inhabitants of a given country to have differences in opinion and express whatever grievances they may have over a given issue. What’s unnatural and immoral is to see people to stoop so low and degrade and downplay the very essence that has given them a distinct identity, one with a remarkable history they should be proud of instead of mocking it . And the sad part is that those victims of ship wreckage for whom we all mourned and paid respect in due time, are being used as tools to drive certain political agenda. One should recall that these shameless and faceless elements also pulled similar political ploy as Eritreans in Europe were gearing up to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Bologna festival.

The hypocrisy in all of these dramas is that the people who are crying “wolf” over the tragic accident off of Mediterranean Sea which, as sad as it is, has no any correlation or link to Eritrea’s independence day celebration, are the same people who are and have been campaigning openly for the continuation of the illegal UN sanction and petitioning to disrupt the EU-Eritrea development plans underway. What kind of opposition that’s completely devoid of any sense of nationalism/patriotism can engage in such reckless activities and expect to win people’s hearts. Do they not realize that the continuation of the sanction is prolonging the suffering of the people and pushing some to take this dangerous journey? On the same token, isn’t calling European governments to stop economic cooperation with Eritrea tantamount to denying food and medicine to the very same people they claim to care? Who in the right mind can support let alone trust organizations who, on one hand, work with smugglers hand and glove in enticing young people to leave the country promising them the sky just to turn around and cry wolf and point fingers at others when tragedies strike?

In life things change for good or for worse and we, as humans, react to them accordingly. The tragedies that occurred on Mediterranean Sea that consumed the lives of our precious people on numerous occasions have touched everyone’s life. Not just did we grief over such tragic loss of lives we also demanded for an independent investigation to apprehend those who are directly and indirectly engaging in human trafficking, a multibillion dollar lucrative business, that is the cause if not the primary cause for the tragedies in the seas and Sahara and Sinai deserts.

Therefore, if the safety of the people is truly of our main concern it is a must that those in the opposition stop playing political games and work for the betterment of the country and the people without jeopardizing its sovereignty. To start with, whatever campaigns and programs in place that would slow down youth migration should be encouraged and not condemned. And most importantly they need to cease working with the enemies who are hell bent in destroying Eritrea’s economy and reversing the very essence for which thousands fought for and paid the ultimate price.

Happy Independence Day Everyone!!

  1. Putting the pictures of these political corpses and human garbage on the front page of an Eritrean website isn't a wise journalistic decision.
These low lives, lost souls, turncoats, sellouts, traitors, jihadists, fundamentalists, regionalists, rapists n garden variety criminals and the lowest of the low of the Eritrean diaspora communities could consider it as a success and mission accomplished. Thus, not giving them the attention they crave, ignoring them and dismiss their shameful activities are the best course of actions.
The Triple AAA toxic damp websites of Awate, Asmarino and Assenaa ...etc...etc which are funded and instructed by the minority of a minority Tribal Junta in Ethiopia are the appropriate places for these kind of political garbage.
Now, it's time for celebration on the occasion of our nations birth day. It's time to reflect and double our mekete efforts and work hard to build the Eritrea of our dreams and worthy of our martyrs' sacrifices.

  4. .. I'm surprised to see those old fools are not dead by now, it's been a long time since the 70s. hah... those f#@^s are just victims of their own deception. So the story goes... Jebha planned to strike a deal with Ethiopia by selling Eritrea back in the days, so Shaebia destroyed Jebha as a result and those old-goats with an old flag have been chanting on the streets of Europe since. So what are those Jebha old-timers bitching about now? FYI... "the old flag" is the federation flag, a slavery flag, designed by the U.N and it represents nothing but foreign rule and oppression. Jebha likewise represents only fanatic muslims, irrational tribal freaks and the mindless, that is all.

  5. These people are creazy they don't learn from mistake. I follow the esat radio very cautiously!
The three A (interesting to name it) are not only jebbeha sympathizers are also nominal ex-fighters so we have to watch these people. I feel they are not concerned about the unity and sovernighty. What is the use of working against yr people and country? Wasn't the aim of the struggling to fight for the Mass? I read Wrong (the writer) comment which she said what is MDG. Hehe it is good to be cautious both Eritreans who live internally and abroad.

I repeat what y said 'without jeopardizing its sovereignty.' That is the most important part to deal with . Opposition is not bad if it has genuinity and able to analyze the pros and cons..

  12. You personify utter servitude in the service of the gangs of criminals ,isaias and his tegaru agents, when you badmouth the patriotic Eritreans who have been struggling to free their country and people.

Eritrea was liberated from Ethiopian colonialism twenty four years ago; the People's Constitution ratified in 1997 ; the Eritrean people, at home and abroad, expected the implementation of the Constitution and to place their democratically elected representatives in the government.

Sadly, that expectation ,to date, is never fufullied and ever since, the country and people have been facing catastrophy after catastrophy,of which the evil engineer and author is none other than isaias afewerki, eulogized and cheered by you and your likes.

It was in order to preempt the implementation of the People's Constitution that isaias afewerki launched premeditated war on Ethiopia in 1998. He misinformed the Eritrean public that the war was in response to woyane invasion. It was a lie. When asked by the eritrean-ethiopian Claimed Commission, he could not substantiated it. The Commission found him guilty of War Aggression , which he submissively accepted.

Badme is often mentioned as the cause for the ignition of the war. But we must never forget the fact that this piece of land was transferred illegally to the ownership of woyane by isaias afewerki just before eritrean independence; its Eritrean inhabitants were excluded from voting during the 1993 referendum, in the aftermath of which woyane starts border instigations.

Now, connect the dots and you will see the ugly face of isaias afewerki emerge. The inference can only be that when isaias afewerki handed over Badme to woyane, he did it to serve him as a pretext for war and for all the consequencea that have befallen on our country and people.

In 2011, in New York, he had promissed to those ,who came to welcome him, that the People' Constitution would be implemented. But after three years later, he declared that the People' Constitution is dead and that he had initiated drafting for new Constitution.

Knowing his very essence, shameless liar, he is not up to any good; he has no intention of producing any constitution but to hoodwink those who are investigating into his human right violation into softening their resolution bewitched by his illusion of Constitution and other subterfuges he has undertaken lately.

  13. Mr. Can you please tell us what the differences are between your above comment and the one that is made by the alley-dog there after? The later does not deny he is against any thing Erian, does not also claim to be Eritrean; how about you?

  14. ..with a society like ours and the neighborhood we live in, hard-core conservative nationalism is the only way, anything else is unthinkable.

  15. I wish you also muster courage and forward that question to isaias afewerki, hagos kisha, Abraha kasa, asmelash abraha ,yemane monkey, yemane g/meskel , all tegaru ,and all at center of the helm of Eritrean government , waging reign terror on our people.

I am patriotic Eritrean through and through but let me make myself clear from the start, I do not discriminate on the bases of his or her ethnic origin, as long as he/she is committed Eritrean ready to give his/her life in defense of sanctity of Eritrean sovereignty, I solute him/her without reservation.

Let me also make clear another point that ,before 2011, I was defending isaias afewerki against those who were attacking him for his tigrai descent. My travel to Eritrea 2011 changed all that. It was then that I discovered isaias afewerki was decimating our people and country under the disguise of false patriotism, that the 1998 war was purposely launched to put the country under his total grip and to bring about the current devastation as a means to the end of his diabolical dream.

Just ask yourself, if, as he would have us believe , that the 1998 war was in defense of woyane invasion, why didn't he inform the UNSC of the invasion before he ordered all out invasion?

And if indeed our country were invaded by woyane, why did he leave eritrea for a visit to a foreign country the very day he ordered the EDF to wage war?

And how come he was not able to successfully argue his case before the Eritrean Ethiopian Claim Commission but submissively accepted the verdict that it was he who was the aggressor?

The same is true with the issue of constitution. Remember what he said, that the People's Constition is dead, alegedly because new developments have rendered it irrelevent. This is completely a lie. The people's Constitution is immortal, it was written in such a way that it can meet any challenge by amendment.

The reason he resorted to such subterfuges was because he knows the implementation of the People' Constution means not only that he will be indicted under its terms for his willfully suspending it for decades but also his life long scheme of decimating Eritrea will end in smoke.

However, there is another potent reason of which he is having a nightmare of his life, he will be indicted in the international Court of Justice for Human Right Violations.

And I might add, there is no a single crack that he can wiggle out through from facing the crime he willfully committed. None whatsoever!!!
