U.S. NGOs Kicked Out of Eritrea: Foreign Aid Is Meant To Cripple People

President Isaias Afwerki in New York City, 2011

By Ezili Dantò

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki

Interview with President Isaias Afwerki:

“Anyone who takes aid is crippled. Aid is meant to cripple people… Governments in Africa and elsewhere are not allowed to write their own programs. And when it comes to implementing programs, it deprives you of building institutions and the capacity to implement your programs…We need to write our own programs in the first place. We need to articulate on the projects we write. We need to have a comprehensive strategy, plans on how to implement those programs…Unless we do that on our own, we can’t possibly imagine that we are achieving any of the goals – millennium or non millennium.” — President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea

Eritrean’s president has kicked the U.S. NGOs out of Eritrea. The tactics of President Afwerki of Eritrea defies the US and its imperialist policies toward Africa. All African Heads of State need to kick out the NGO charitable industrial complex and design their own reforms by themselves for their own implementation and independence.

President Isaias says African mineral resources are not sustainable for economic development in the immediacy. Developing infrastructure for this will take generations to come. Comparative advantage are of greater immediate importance. “Your location could be a comparative advantage. If you have a long coastline, then you develop fisheries, develop your services industry – shipping, transportation – air, land. Provide industry and manufacturing.”

“Africa can produce its own food and grow more. Why aren’t we able to do that?” You have to produce something. Emphasize sustainable sectors. Agriculture is a sustainable sector. You need to put in place agriculture infrastructure. It’s a strategy commodity for communities.

“You need to think least on mineral resources (for economic development)… Gold glitters but it blinds people…If you forgo agriculture because you have gold, you go into a trap. If you forgo comparative advantage that you have because you have gold, then you make a big mistake.”

Food sovereignty and local production, local manufacturing and development are more critical than depending on resource exploitation. You must have a balance, comprehensive program that takes stock of your comparative advantages in different sectors and local needs first.

“Local markets are everything.”

  2. You're right Salwa...wish our immediate neighbours has a charismatic and man of principle as him as a leader...then we would have a better horn of Africa.

  3. This ideology alone makes me the proudest young Eritrean in the planet. There are some minor things I use to complain about, but it now makes sense when you factor in the countries who had their independence 30yrs before us and are 90% worst off then us today.

I believe It's our duty and obligation to preserve our resources, leverage our ability our people and as we grow richer as a nation, we should develop our technology to advance our reach and future prospspects. I have couple friends from Haiti where I went to school. They envy what the Eritrea has achieved and the direction it's headed.

When you have a feed, educated and healthy generation, your setting a platform of a paradigm shift to happen in Eritrea. Can't wait for my generation to reap the benefits of the next 25yrs of my leaders foundation. I won't be surprised when in turn 50 (2040) Eritrea will undoubtedly be the Singapore of Africa. Even the Singapore leader (who recently passed away) faced similar challenges in his first 25yrs of Independence.

Go Eritrea and remain truly Independent! NO DEAD AID IN ERITREA, TURN AROUND AND GIVE IT TO POOR IN THE U.S. 46 MILLION ON FOOD STAMPS AND HAVE A NICE DAY!

  4. Yeah me too I am so proud. And everyone in the world knows what an incredible success Eritrea has become. What a man. My mom use to be in love with him but now says that he has become old and looks like my grandpa. But for me he is still one super sexy man. Hey look the guy is almost 70 years old and still has jet black hair and mustache. He has incredible genes.

  5. Jegna with all due respect, Eritrea was supposed to become the Singapore of Africa more than 20 years ago. And, in regards to preserving our resources, not sure about that. Not real convinced with the potash deal that has been made with Australia. And, if Eritrea is truly becoming aid free, we better kindly decline the large EU monies that we are now saying that we will take as well as the bilateral donations of food that we have received over the past several years from Japan. Are you in America now? Seems that you are. Have a nice day.

I am sure, absolutely sure, that he has a plan to take Badme within the next 10 years. We need to support him. Even if we are not in Eritrea. Me too, I am so proud. Almost make me cry that proudness I feel inside. It is incredible. who needs to go to church when they feel this good. It is like some imaginary drug. Wow. He is such a man.

  15. I think NGOS are not the angels as they portrayed themselves to be. Sometimes they don’t have the best interest in their heart for the host country. The fund they bring to a host country is used 70% for administration the rest for projects the fund intended for Ethiopia mandated all NGOS to use their fund 70% for projects and 30% for administrative purposes if these NGOS want to stay in the country, some left some stayed, even though those who stayed resisted the policy for a while. Of course, some government official uses these funds for personal leisure. Regardless of these setbacks, some NGOS do a fairly good job. In some countries like, Eritrea, Zimbabwe, North Korea some times in Sudan and Egypt these NGOS kicked out of the country. These NGOS in addition to providing humanitarian assistance also try to advocate human right issues in the host countries. For some countries particularly, countries that have one leader for a long time, this NGOS bring political risk that challenges the leader of those countries. Leaders tend to weigh in the political risk that comes with these NGOS and make a decision to keep them or kick them out of the country. For Eritrean officials, the political risk NGOS bring in outweighed the economic benefits they bring in, that is the only reason the Eritrean government kick the NGOS out of the country. This is a mechanism used by the regime to stay in power by limiting the activism these NGOS bring in to the country. The rest is, as they say, is history or, shall I say cheap politics advocated by juvenile politicians whom livelihood depended on the existence of the regime .

It is expected to decline further as a result the stock price down to minimum level in the world market. This is bad news for Eritrean and Ethiopian which are in the queue ,the next potash market in the world. Really bad luck.

“LOVE is the key to LIFE”. That was the word from Dr Ukaka when I consulted his powerful Love Temple. I married the wrong man; I realized that after four years of our unfruitful marriage. Everything was going from Best to Worst in our life, no child, I got demoted from work after our marriage, my husband was sacked a year after. His application for new job in various offices was constantly declined even though he was qualified enough. I was made to take care of my family with the low income I earn get that wasn’t enough to pay our rent. We keep praying a seeking for help from some people, my friends laugh at me behind because I was advised not to get married yet.It was one Thursday night that my husband woke me up and told me that has thought enough about our crisis, he said that our crisis is not ordinary and it’s beyond our spiritual level. He suggested we should consult Dr Ukaka from testimonies he showed me online about how he has been helping families. I was afraid, I don’t like evil or spell but I supported him to contact him if he can help us. We consulted him via freedomlovespell@hotmail.com and he replied positively after 20munites with congratulating email that he can help us but he will need our pure heart and trusts in his work if he will cast the spell on us and purify our life. We agreed to his terms. He cast the spell and told us to expect results within 5days. I waited for three days nothing happened, so I started having doubt and blaming my husband for emailing Dr Ukaka. It was on the fifth day that my husband was called for an interview and he got a well-paying work, I was prompted to a higher position. I missed my period on the 5th day and it was confirmed that I am with a baby. Things have really changed for us for good and we now have our own house and cars. I will never forget what Dr Ukaka told us “LOVE is the key to LIFE”, this word keep me going. People that laughed at us are coming close for help and I am delighted to welcome them because my family is now blessed. Dr Ukaka is a savior and man that keep to his word even when I doubted his powers at the end of the spell. Thank you great Dr Ukaka and your Oracle for helping us via freedomlovespell@hotmail.com and I will keep spreading this message to people in need of help. also contact him for help.website address: freedomlovespelltemple.yolasite.com ;),

  30. This man is a legend!! We cannot be blinded by our minerals. True, eritrea is on its way to balance it's budget (being one of the few countries in Africa) , but hopefully we will use the minerals to build a sustainable economy!

Btw, someone should make an compilation of all his English interviews. Because everyone of them is amazingly good.

  32. He has been advertised as Eritrea's savior for over 20yrs now and the progress he has made in our country is negligible. Blaming external forces doesn't help, it didn't in the armed struggle and doesn't now. He has corrupted our country and lost a generation of Eritreans in the process. What he is saying in this interview is correct, but he is not practical and is simply repeating this rhetoric to feed his supporters and justify his stranglehold on Eritrea's freedom. He has shamed our martyrs and has failed his people. May God look favorably upon Eritrea, we would have to go back centuries to find a time when we were at peace!

The Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue was established in 1991, one year after Kreisky’s death, by his companions and friends with a view to pursuing those objectives which had always been close to his heart during his entire political career.

Over decades, the Kreisky villa at Armbrustergasse 15 in Vienna was the scene of international and national meetings as well as a centre of political decision-making. In 1991, the Bruno Kreisky Forum acquired the building with the support of the Republic of Austria and had it converted into a modern forum for dialogue.

As a European think-tank it acted as a centre for dialogue where politicians, scientists and intellectuals from all over the world could get together to exchange their ideas and views, to analyse complex issues and problems, work out approaches to global solutions and take a public stand on political events – especially confrontations and armed conflicts.

The year’s diary is packed with discussions, symposia, lectures and seminars, and hence the Kreisky Forum has established itself as an indispensable element of intellectual and political life in Vienna, Austria and Europe.

  50. The Eritrean government kicked out NGOs to avoid political risk that comes with from NGOs social activism they do. The regime in Eritrea calculated the political risk of having NGOs in the country with the economic benefit they bring to the host country and the regime did not want to risk political turmoil for the sake of economic benefits, a political turmoil that risks its survival. The government decision to kick out NGOs has nothing to do with the Eritrean people. Only hot head dictators from Zimbabwe, Korea, Eritrea kicked out NGOs because they can't gamble the political risk that makes their survival diminish. They do it to live longer, even though citizen lose the benefits.

  53. This is why I admittedly have some resentment, perhaps
unfairly, against you guys that are commenting from outside of Eritrea. Back on
Friday, May 24th, 1991; when we entered Asmara, it was a special
time. Asmara’s population seemed to instantly double and everyone went on a one
week nonstop party. I cannot remember
how many months it was in the following that commercial airlines started again.
But whenever they did, we quickly would see a lot of Eritreans from the Diaspora,
coming back and they seemed as happy as we were. We were all happy as it was a
special time. Coming from the field, both
our men and women fighters in dirty in plastic sandals and with field clothing,
we at some point, not all of us but most of us, began to feel some animosity
towards our Eritrean sisters and brothers coming from abroad for they were
coming back to Eritrea after the war in new fashionable clothing with
education, money and a desire to invest while we on the other hand, had in some
sense, been lost in time and were not sure what our future held for us. I remember feeling sad for some of our women
fighters as Eritreans returning from abroad seemed to bypass them in favor of
non-fighters that were with modern clothing and had money to go to beauty
salons. Even a lot of male fighters were chasing these city girls and at times
leaving their wives that had for years
waited for then. PIA was actually good at giving preference to
ex-fighters but still those coming from aboard with money, education and skills
were the ones taking the best opportunities. And when the 1998-2000 war was occurring,
a lot but not all of our Eritrean brothers and sisters that had come to invest
in Eritrea quickly took off for countries that they had passport affiliation with.
I remember even being disappointed by Tesfay Girmatsion, who had been one our
vocal heads of the EPLF Liaison Office in the USA, who was made Minister of
Agriculture after liberation, leaving for the USA when things started to heat
up. So yes, maybe it is not fair to criticize you young Eritreans that are
living outside but the past somehow has a way of sticking in our minds far
    longer than it should.

    ReplyDelete
  54. As a youth I too idolized PIA. He was my hero and nobody
could say anything that could do harm to his name. I remember the first time
that I had met him, that I had dropped to my knees to kiss his feet. He was the
motivating factor behind my joining the EPLF front in 1987.

After 1993, I had left Asmara to work with an international organization
in Addis Ababa as I had admittedly wished to make money for which I did not
have at the time and I guess I was selfish to some extent, in that I did not
wish to continue working for low pay in Asmara. I had hoped to make enough
money and then return to Eritrea and invest and work.

In 1997 when we started to hear of disgruntlement between the
Eritrean and Ethiopian Governments, we could not have imagined that it would
have escalated into full blown war. There use to be an Eritrean bar on Wello Sefer road in Addis Ababa that was owned by Lucio Di Masco (an Eritrean football player
that along with Girma Asmara had led the only Ethiopian football team to win
the African cup). It was a hangout place for Eritreans including those from our
Embassy in Addis Ababa. I guess it must have been sometime in late 1998 that we
noticed that Tigray security were coming to the bar to see who was going there.
I remember Lucio waving me to get out of the bar when one of the security
people had gone to the toilet but I did not catch his cue in time. In April of
1991, I was deported but still with employment rights with the international organization that I was working with. I would then be assigned to another country and would only return during the war and following, on short vacation trips.

I guess for me, in terms of changing my perception of the Eritrean government, it came in 2001 with the locking up of the G15. Asmara is small in many ways and most people knew the G15 members. For me personally, I was shocked to hear that Petros and Haile were amongst the G15. In the following, many of us had expected that there would have been some type of judicial processing of their cases but that never came.

While I do not hate Ethiopians, nor even Tigreans, I do have
distain for the TPLF core and security apparatus which really controls the
Ethiopian Government. I too am very disappointed by the UN and international community in regards to implementation of the UN border decision; it is indeed a shame.
While I agree with PIA on many issues to include the view that international aid is bad, I am critical of the Eritrean Government for not implementing a judicial system and a constitution and for not opening up the country to private investment. At least implementation of a judicial system would give the Government much needed transparency and mitigate a lot of bad international press.
In regards to the border, I really do not have any answers other than to sound the war drum in an attempt to get international attention or to more actively pursue diplomatic channels which will require our government to loosen their hold on certain positions.

    ReplyDelete
  55. They must have increased your pay! You know all this about Eritrea, how? Were you consulted? You even unabashedly claim that NGO's were kicked out of Eritrea for reasons that have nothing to do with the Eritrean people.

Yes, Eritrea or any other country will have to calculate the risk and benefit of hosting NGO's--the benefit on would get out of the development that they claim to bring and the foreign currency they do bring versus their nefarious activities: espionage, effectors of colored revolutions, being the "ministry of development," interference in internal affairs (which you call activism), promotion of culturally insensitive activities, perpetuating their job instead of completing their jobs successfully, etc., etc. . .

Now, who are we going to believe, what we ourselves witness and what our own president is telling or Erty? Mr. Erty, you should know that many economists are agreeing that foreign aid which often comes along with the NGO's implementing the aid are ineffective and tell you the reasons. One such economist has written about your country! You should find and read it. It was posted in one of your compatriots websites.

The more you try to be an authority on Eritrea, the more you show that "your knowledge" is fictitious which is equivalent to nothing!

  56. Eritrea as nation is younger than me, there is just enough
to know about Eritrea history. Sometimes
NGOs are diabolic but all NGOs are not the same.

  57. Are U calling urself civilized or do you mean obeying the white man is civilized? Just get the fuck out of my face and I´ll show you if I can make it alone or not. In fact, my friends are many but with a neighbour like you around, an attack dog of a foreign superpower, makes my friends shy away for the meantime. What U mean by dialogue and diplomacy is double speak for "give it up. Be like me. A beggar on his knees". Drbay!!!

  60. We kicked the U.S. NGOs out of Eritrea, b/c they are the cancer slowly trying to decay us, coated with spies to cripple our country and divied people. just like the bible says-lusifer was once an Angle, he twited the mind of..Adam and hiewan...in the garden of Eden in order to sprate them from GoD and make them fall from grace. u get wat i mean. :)

we expeld them cuz we do not fear them, b/c they don't own us. Africa is in deep shit cuz they fear them, b/c if they expeld them, the Aid they get from them will be cut off. and thats why, when we say they are our enemise the other African countries try to say...some NGOs are good not all of them are bad just like a dulional slave would say. there is a saying in Eritrea..."Dorho's Anwihka te'aserkaya's Z'gedefkaya Y'mesla".

Fear has always been the biggest stumbling block to success of Africa. More people are held back by fear than by any other factor. "A mind focused on doubt and fear cannot focus on the journey to victory." Fear confines u to ur comfort zone and prevents u from stepping out and unleashing ur full potential. It is fear that makes u avoid risks and keeps u chained to ur limiting beliefs thus hurting ur odds of winning aganist ur enemise.

So ma beloved Africa Wake-up before u fall to farther darkness. Never allow fear cripple you!!!....

  62. It is important to note the NGOs gets their funding from USAid which is infamous for being a haven for spies. they're not just getting expelled from Eritrea also in Russia, Bolivia, Ecuador and so on...

And don't forget the US plan to destroy an Agricultural economy in Haiti thru their NGOs.

” The most common, official CIA cover, is provided by the State Department, which permits operatives to carry out diplomatic duties in an American embassy by day and their real jobs by night: trying to get local officials and other foreign nationals to turn coat and secretly work for the CIA. Other U.S. government agencies like NGOs so on...provide cover as well. In South Vietnam, the U.S. Agency for International Development(USAID) provided cover for CIA operatives so widely that the two became almost synonymous.”

Allen Weinstein, a member of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) working group known as the Democracy Group, which first proposed the formation of a quasi-governmental group to channel
U.S. political aid, served as NED’s acting president during its first year. Talking about the role of NED, Weinstein told the Washington Post in 1991 that “a lot of what we do today was done covertly 25 years ago by the CIA.”

  69. Then is sad if you talk negatively about it, as you been there, somehow nobody forced you to be there..in some sense is like "spit in the plate were you eat"..
Advice: to be a fair human being, try to see also the positive aspect of anything, unless you don't find one..Then people will see in you a natural fairness..And will help you to have your opinion and not a collective one, as today world wide we know there are several media prone to distort people's image..
