Former Kenyan Official suspects Ethiopia is in alliance with Al-Shabab

By Ramadhan Rajab

Farah Maalim is a former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya. He spoke to our reporter Ramadhan Rajab about Amisom forces role in Somalia in relation to al Shabaab militants. Here are excerpts:

RAMADHAN RAJAB:  The political interests you hinted at, who are out to maintain the status-quo of a failed State in Somalia, what is the way out from that limbo?

FARAH MAALIM: Right now people of the region are asking those questions too. Personally I don’t think regimes in this region have a long time to hide.

Look at al Shabaab and Ethiopia, there seems to be a tacit understanding between them.

Al Shabaab moves in a zone and the Ethiopian forces moves out from that zone and vice-versa, you hardly hear of an engagement between these parties.

You wonder sometimes whether there is an unholy alliance between them. Look at the region like Mandera where the al Shabaab sneaked in and killed Kenyans in a quarry.

It is around the Ethiopian forces sector but the militants are able to infiltrate cross over the border and kill and return back. Ethiopia has capacity and resources to clear that menace in less than a week but they seem uninterested to clean that area.

The global community and funders of these operations should start asking hard questions on whether they are putting their money where their mouths are.

They should make sure that the forces utilise resources to meet the set out goals and objectives and give a timeline because as there is now an impression that the Amisom forces don’t want al Shabaab menace wiped out because it serves as shield to fend off international scrutiny and pressure on towing the good governance line.

  6. Isn't in europe the same way, you go to italy from spain without visa? or viceversa? why shouldn't the same in the "african union"?

  7. Not for all European countries only those that belong to the EU. Albanians for example are not a part of the EU. And with Eritrea, there are very few countries that are allowed to enter without a visa, Somalia and Kenya are two of them. Not sure what the latest these days is in regards for USA people not or Eritrean descent getting entry visas for Eritrea. Do you know?

  9. I have a number of American friends that ask me all the time if they can get visas to enter into Eritrea but I do not really know. I knew a few years back there were some issues but did not know if the same held true today. Did not know if there were tourists companies that I could refer them to or not. I remember the last time that I was in Roma by the Massawa restaurant, the owner of Africa Restaurant, also an Eritrean, also owned a travel agency but I did not ask him.

  14. Europe is feeling it 2., the destruction they caused in libya is flooding them with migrants quarter of a million a year. Now kenya is feeling it with a sense of danger all over bombings here massacre there. This is why being neutral is good.

  15. For sure alec., and i think this is just the tip of the iceberg because Kenya doesn't seem to "get it". They double down in the invasion instead of handling their own business. The worse problem is that the Somalis will always remember it also. Even if peace is reached some how it will be on thin ice. When you have a serious trojan or virus best thing to do is go and see the last save you did with your OS and reboot the computer to the time before you had the virus. I remember a time when Kenya was relatively safe before the invasion. LOL so i would tell them to remember their non interference before the amisom money came rolling in.
