Video: Controversial Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project delayed due to shortage of money

By France 24

FRANCE 24 - Due to a lack of sufficient funding, work on the project – estimated at four billion euros – is delayed. Our reporters went to see.

The Nile dam is expected to produce as much energy as six nuclear power stations for one of the world's poorest states, but the population may pay a high price.

For Ethiopia, this "Renaissance Dam", as the Ethiopians have nicknamed it, brings the promise of irrigated agriculture and energy independence.

However, the project is controversial. Damming a river has implications for everyone who lives nearby and anyone who makes a living on the waterway.

Downstream countries – Sudan, and especially Egypt – also see the project as a threat. Although diplomatic tensions, which were high at the project's launch, have eased somewhat, the dam continues to cause concern.

Remember we were giving views and ideas from many Eritreans in this web how the donated
money mischief by the chifra-militia and the NGO, it will take years and they will beg again and
again. What a corrupted NGO's these western countries have.

  7. Dubale! Duba ras! It is just news Madote is a news outlet. why do you see it that Eritreans are against Ethiopian development? we are happy for the Ethiopian people if they eat "three times a day" we are happy when the poor have access to medical and clean water....I beleive a prosporous Ethiopia is good for the region as a whole but a corupt regime and trying to prolong thier grip at the expense of depcting Eritrea as an enemy and in the process getting the productive youth killed is not good and will always stand against that but that is not to say we hate Ethiopians we just don' t allow any one to walk all over us..Hope you understand Dubale Duba ras.

  8. sudan and egypt have already agreed to have the dam built, even though eritrea made its stance that it is against the dam on the nile, and that they want to be involved in the nile committee

  9. No Eritrea only said that it backs Egypt's right to have water..... because with it the society is doomed and also most likely erupt in war. They called on Ethiopia to work cooperatively.

  15. That is what you get when you reduce your self to begging to survive or when you let your country and people be "neocolonized". Just take a look. Here the UK stopped 4.25 Billion aid to Ethiopia in the first week of March and here your dam stopped in second of week of March.

First week of March, UK stopped 4,25 Billion in aid = Second week of March, Dam project stopped..

What is to follow? In the 4th week of March, get ready to read half of the civil servants of Ethiopia, which includes teachers, shall be kicked out.

Then again, why should you be shocked by this. After all, this is what you call colonizing a country without sending an invading army.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It quite educational and enlightening to see here is UK to have stopped 4.25 Billion in aid to Ethiopia in the 1st week of March and here is the "dam" stopped for a lack of money in the 2nd week of March. What more "stoppage" shall come, come morning, in the accursed land we call Ethiopia? And that is the question.

They asked for it and here it is; they got it. And that is what they get when they let them selves "neocolonized" by the NGOs of the West.

As our wise Eritrean forefathers put it, it is "May God not make you an example for others to learn from your mistakes; but may God give the wisdom to learn from the mistakes of others".

But here is timely lesson for Eritreans to learn more about the evil nature of NGOs of the West.

  17. i think some Ethiopian misunderstand the stand of Eritrea & Eritrean, as i have in a number of commented stated THIS WATER I BELIEVE IS A GOD GIVEN GIFT TO ETHIOPIA and ETHIOPIAN in general and well neither do i like Egypt or believe they have more say than those countries the water comes from (this also included Eritrea.) however as a slave Ethiopia is answerable to foreigners subjection added with a corrupt regime that subjects its own for the interest of others, and honestly this project should have started under your last king rather than putting Eritrean and Ethiopia into a 50 years war, showing how Ethiopia is cursed by bad leadership
even these bonds they are selling in real term have no value (maybe it would have a value 50-70 years on - which in reality would've lost it real value due to the time span) but not for the current or next generation ... and cost of builiding this single project at the expence of there needed projects with the view if succesful here, it will cure all the other illneses only harm Ethiopian people in the short and long term.
the Egyptian fear has a lot of truth on it as the power Ethiopia will have over Egypt like it or not would be so immense to the point of having power over life and death ... over all though i think Ethiopia need to finish it ASAP, Even by getting finical assistance (although they are poor themselves) from other neighbouring nations and then use it for the good of the whole area .... for i'm 110% behind Ethiopia on this project but it need to be for the good of the people and not outsider who will run to use it when the project is finish and Ethiopian will welcome them with open arms, forgetting their past stand for simply because they are white ....
finally do not take Eritrea or Eritrean as been against this project rather, what our government has stated is Ethiopia needs to work and respect the right of Egyptian to life,
p.s. what that Ethiopian leader was talking about in regards to Ethiopia works on the win-win principal has not been demonstrated in anything (although he did say on this project), so its when one hears bulls***t like that makes me question even my own support of this project, i believe its Ethiopia's right to this water but this does not mean that due to this power they forget their human responsibilities as they have don in the past... "for with great power comes great responsibilities" and Ethiopian leadership have always failed on the responsibility part - i hope its different this time

  21. Easy does it Wedi Mai Telamit. My posting is not meant for you to educate but to remind or inform my patriotic fellow Eritreans. The message is clear and it said, if you let your country be "recolonized" by outside force, what you get is what is happening to Ethiopia. That is, what you get when you reduce your self to begging to survive or when you let your country and people be "neocolonized". Here the modern-day colonizers to have conquered Ethiopia without shooting a single shot. That message to my fellow Eritreans is what I wanted to convey.

You see Wedi Mai Telamit, there is saying in our country which goes" May God not make you the bad example for others to learn from ; but may God give the mistakes of the others to learn from. In short, I am telling Eritreans to learn from Ethiopia, the accursed or the unlucky country.

  23. The dam on the Nile is an Ethiopian project on Ethiopian waters and on Ethiopian land. The last I heard, the ኣንበጣ north of the Mereb fought tooth and nail for 30 years to separate from Ethiopia. But now, the ኣንበጣ is back pontificating on matters that is none of it's business, rather than deal with it's own myriads of issues, such as the floods of refugees leaving its country, or the floods of refugees that have become organ farms or shark feed, no freedom of movement, no freedom of speech, no constitution, a prison state under lock-down, the ኣንበጣ has decided to pretend none of this tragedy is happening in it's own country and has decided to imagine itself as an important entity in the region and the world, pontificating on matters that are none of its business and giving advise that are not requested in a forum only where the blind read what the blind have posted, is simply a tragic case of ቂጥ ገልቦ ራስ መከናነብ or is it የራስዋ ስያርባት፣ የሰው ታማስላለች. Which is which? You decide.

  24. blah, blah, blah, blah, >>>>>>>>>>>>>!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Again - የራስዋ ስያርባት፣ የሰው ታማስላለች. Say what you will and scream what you will, the fact is the ኣንበጣ will never, ever, ever be able to leech off Ethiopia and Ethiopians for it's own benefit. The ኣንበጣ will never live in Ethiopia and prosper economically on the back of Ethiopians again. The ኣንበጣ is out in the cold fending for itself in its beloved sand-box that is Eritrea. Goodbye and Good Riddance!! When the ኣንበጣ has hemorrhaged from the inside out and its corps lies dead in the torrid sands of Eritrea, the Afars, Saho, Kunama and Nara can join their brethren in Ethiopia, once they are finally rid of the ኣንበጣ of Hamasien and Seray.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So a single reporter makes a comment without any substantiation or factual evidence that the project has been delayed and the ኣንበጣ on this form goes into delusional verbal diarrhea. Anything that may or may not be bad news for Ethiopia, (who cares whether its true or not but as long as I get a high out of it), the ኣንበጣ starts hoping around. The alleged delay of the dam construction has not been reported by anyone else. Why don't you substantiate, do your due diligence and investigate before you rejoice for joy? Oh, wait, the ኣንበጣ brain size is that of a grain of sand. Such intelligent thought process is not possible. Never mind!

oh you forked tongued ተመን if you really want to see the face of a true ኣንበጣ just look in the mirror and you'll find the personification of ኣንበጣ and how he loves nothing more than to look and take what's not his, condemning more than 4 generation into a state of war in order to claim what does not belong to him/her, so i apologize to one of God creation ኣንበጣ for i'm compering a child of the devil to this creature. i'm so sorry ኣንበጣ for i know this foul creature child of the devil is lower than you. .... you do understand even when God made this head ኣንበሳ north of the Mereb, he made him to look down, lower than his feet in order to see this ኣንበጣ / ተመን south of the Mereb

He united Eritrea with Ethiopia and while he started big projects like the study of Renaissance dam (by then border dam) you aligned with Egypt and did what you did. He is gone long ago but look where our relations is so low as bitter enemies, down from one nationhood. Don't accuse any one who can't defend himself. Ask yourself what you did for our common good? At least you should not oppose this dam as it is the asset of the region.
    PEACE

  40. Why don't you let Egyptians boast about their military prowess and talk about your own? Where're Eritrea's Air Force and Army? Why don't you take back Badme? What are you waiting for? Egypt does not have the capacity to to invade and control Ethiopia. Everyone knows that excepts the Eritrean Anbeta.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Who counted the dead? you? Issayas? If Ethiopia lost 150,000 and Eritrea won the war, how come Ethiopia ended up in control of 1/3 of Eritrean territory in just 5 days?? How many of your soldiers did you lose at Badme that was, in a surprise military move completely surrounded and wiped out by the Ethiopian army? What kind of reality do you live in? What kind of drugs are you on??

  42. Ethiopians have no desire to be associated with a humiliated, denegrated and ostracized Eritrea that is synonymous with "refugees", "organ farms", "drowning in seas", "prison state". It is an embarassement to be an Eritrean. That is why when your own flesh and blood drowned at Lampadusa, your own government denied that they were Eritreans. YOUR VERY OWN GOVERNMENT IS EMBARRASED OF ERITREA!!! So... if you ever had the notion that Ethiopians desire to be with Eritrea, or be associated with Eritrea in the remotest sense, think again and get another notion... like you're on your own and you have no one to blame but yourselves for the humiliating state you and your country is in. If throwing insults at me makes you feel better, I'm happy to be of service.

    ReplyDelete
  43. No you're not from Eri Bekentu or Doro Manequa. You're right. You are in the refugee camps in Ethiopia and Sudan. You are in jail in Eritrea, or treking in the desserts of North Africa. or captured by Organ traders and making calls to your family in the West to pay the ransom or drowning at sea in the Mediteranean and Red Sea or in the west working as Taxi drivers or Parking lot attendants and paying 2% of your income to Issayas and his thugs to continue to terrorize your family left beind. You'd kiss the ground you are standing on if you were in Eri Bekentu or Doro Maneqia. That's for sure!!

  44. Hidrom - the land that is cursed is Eritrea. Ill wished against Ethiopia are not new. But that is all they are ill wishes. Don't forget, there are over 110,000 Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia. You should be thanking Ethiopia for playing host and taking care of your unfortunate country men rather than wishing bad luck on Ethiopia. But then again that would be expecting too much.

    ReplyDelete
  45. well if you do not know what your emperor did, then i'm sorry but i can not teach you your own history so i advice you to look back and study your own history and the cause of the war between these two countries....furthermore i'm accusing where accousation is due (do not forget the present is the product of the choices and decisions made in the past, in the same way the future is the result of the choices and decisions we make in the present) i do not know if my wording is not clear or your choice to see Eritrea as an enemy is preventing you from seeing the truth as i have never opposed this dam, i do not care about what others say or view my comments as but i've always viewed this water as belonging to Ethiopia and never have i opposed it so stop seeing what you want to see. however as your name shows you do not desire or want peace rather you are the agent of hate and war as your name clearly shows and contradicts your choice of saying PEACE in capital letters ... anyhow as an Eritrean i only want peace and justice which will be for the good of both people and even the whole african nations so peace

    ReplyDelete
  46. you're really delusional, you forked tongued snake seriously you need help and not from me, what planet or reality do you live in, when you spend half a century fighting to keep Eritrean and now you are illegally keeping Eritrean territory under your control under the notion that you'll somehow get Eritrea back, and you know what no Eritrea ever and i mean ever claims to be Ethiopian yet your people do, i even meet one yesterday who claim to be Eritrea until i deeply questioned him and then he try to say we are the same. you are delusional and need help its your people who claim to be Eritrean all over the world but anyhow how F***ed up are you to claim i thrown any insults its you who tossed insults at me 1st, even though my original message was that of peace... seriously i hate wasting my time on fools like you, who lie in front of every one., you are an agem as its clear to every one to see your twisted heart and forked tongue so please don't reply ... p.s. you're happy because an Eritrea is talking to you, it is like a dream come true even if its an insult, to you its haven on Earth and of course you are happy to be of service to me as its natural just like your mom and your sisters before you.

The war of 1998 that was triggered by Issayas was the best thing that could have happened for Ethiopia. 80,000 of your blood sucking Anbeta were vacuumed out of every corner of Ethiopia and emptied out at the border. There are 80,000 or so more that are still slithering in Ethiopia. I"m only sorry we were not able to kick them out before the West pressured Ethiopia to stop the deportation. How about the nearly 200,000 Tigrinya refugees languishing and festering in refugee camps in northern Ethiopia, breathing our sacred air? 59. Eritrea has no say about the dam. Nobody asked for Eritrea's opinon. Eritrea does not possess the political clout or importance to have a voice on any issue that concerns Ethiopia and Egypt. Eritrea needs to concentrate on this refugee exudus problem and try to figure out where her next meal will come from.
