Eritrean Airlines Begins Weekly Flights to Europe

In a recent advertisement made on Eritrea Profile, Eritrean Airlines announced it has commenced operation to a number of destinations effective this month.

According to the ad, the national flag carrier has added the routes Asmara-Khartoum-Cairo three times per week and Asmara-Milan-Asmara once per week to its destinations.

Moreover, Eritrean Airlines is operating its regular flights of Asmara-Jeddah-Asmara and Asmara-Dubai-Asmara.

The addition of Milan to its destination seems to be an indication that the EU Air Safety List (black list) on Eritrean Airlines from flying to Europe has been lifted.

The EU bans airlines which do not comply with the EU safety standards. In some cases, if the EU finds a civil aviation authority of a country that does not fulfill the required international safety oversight standards, it bans all the airlines that are licensed by the authority in that country.

  1. Civil Aviation is a very expensive business. Many reputable and international carries are struggling to break even. Given this fact we shouldn't run Eritrean Airlines for the sake of it. Only and only when it is in a position to generate profit and self sustain should it be revived to its full potential. For the moment if it is profitable, I am all for it. otherwise wait for the right time and let make use of the carriers serving Eritrea.

  2. Daniel, you are right. The biggest problem we have is the lack of market. With a small population base and an even smaller people who could afford to fly, it is going to be an uphill battle. But with the burgeoning mine industry, it is hoped that the market would be available for our Airlines to get launched from a solid background.
    Viva Eritrea!

  6. Let's just give it 3 to 6 months, and we will hear the disappearance of this plane. The problem is not because operating an airliner is expensive, the problem is luck of diplomacy and leadership. Eritrea is blessed with able people who can run any kind of business. However, the biggest problem is the interference of the child leader Esseyas Afeworki in all types of businesses. As a result, we are marching backwards.
MAY GOD HAVE MERCY UPON OUR BELOVED COUNTRY ERITREA!!!

  19. Madote, I am starting to believe the theory of woyanes low IQ! It seems their brain can’t distinguish sad and happy news when occurred in a short period of time. It is expected that no matter how small, good news about Eritrea is a terrible news to Woyane; however, you would expect them to show some respect to their loved ones of the red sea accident, by taking time before the start of celebration of the “small” airline business deal of Shaebia. Do you remember what Mengistu’s soldiers coming back to Asmara from the war front against the mighty Shaebia use to do? Dance on top of their Russian made trucks, we use to call IFA. Regardless how much they lost, they always danced. These were the lucky ones who managed to run away from the onslaught of Shaebia. They have already forgotten their comrades, they have no shame! what's up with woyanay? Could it be hereditary?

Woyanay, brace for a long winter, because, Shaebia that don’t bow even to CIA is getting stronger by the day.

  29. The fact that a lease of a single airplane by the barely functioning Eritrean Airlines was celebrated as a huge step forward shows how out of touch some people here are with reality. Eritrean Airlines started (or restarted) operations more than a decade ago (Queen Bee). After the first senior official Captain Asres went back to the US after about two years, Kibrom Dafla (a man who served many years in various financial departments of Eritrean government institutions (Ministry of Trade and Industry, Himbol Finance, Red Sea Trading Corporation etc.)) took over. He has explained in great detail (listen to his interviews on youtube) how Eritrean Airlines was micromanaged (and thus mismanaged) by the Presidents Office. The most revealing part to me was when the President demanded Eritrean Airlines make Massawa their main hub instead of Asmara International Airport. This is just indicative of the mindset of that man and Kibrom Dafla rightfully tried to convince the president that the board of the airlines should be left into making that decision.

After trying very hard for more than four years of making Eritrean Airlines a successful enterprise and trying to convince the president of stopping his interference into the day to day affairs of the airlines, the CEO became disillusioned and realized that Eritrea under the leadership of Isaias would not be one where a CEO of the national airlines could run that company free from daily interference into their affairs. After serving Eritrea and the EPLF for more than three decades he defected in 2009 and he now resides in The Netherlands. The airline meanwhile was run by the Pakistani Shakil Aftab Kashmirwala (who has since left).

Eritrean Airlines is a textbook example of the mismanagement of the nation. No transparency, no accountability, no annual report that is published and, from a marketing viewpoint perhaps the worst, no website. In the last decade it has operated it never had a functioning website where people could book tickets and receive flight information. Eritrean Airlines could have been a modest success story by now. The fact that a backward and war torn country like Yemen has a national airline (with a website mind you) with a fleet of around 10 airplanes, and more importantly flies to Asmara weekly, shows that there was plenty of room for Eritrean Airlines to succeed. Ten years later however, Eritrean Airlines barely has a functioning fleet.

A country with a coastline of more than a 1000 KM and only 8 hours away from Europe has everything it needs to be a tourist magnet and as a result have a reasonably large airline. The case of Eritrean Airlines however shows that government (mis)handling at the end of the day is what is the most defining factor.

But remember patience is not simply the ability to wait - it's how we behave while we're waiting.

And don't worry Agame boy why don't u pray for ur woyane gang soon they will run to dedebit when they get chased by the other Ethiopians.

Dear zombie, this is the 3rd or 4th time that you're posting the same boring tale of a QUITTER CEO, you're indeed a tea-shop talebearer consumed by chronic bad-blood.

The tales/whining of your CEO will not alter the evident facts laying behind the ups and downs of the national carrier, no need to list the numerous antagonisms & conspiracies the airline had to bear since it began existing 20 years ago. Any individual with a minimum knowledge of the air business would understand that it's not like running a coffee-shop and that it's tough not only for a nascent country but even for developed and rich countries e.g. Alitalia which after insolvency now is saved by the Qatar's Al-Itthad.

Your objective is to demoralize and demonize, good, go ahead but remember (for your own sanity), you're dealing with Shaebia, the silent, energetic and the never relinquishing Eritrean people's vanguard....revert to its glorious history, you may wise up.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Are you kidding? You do not understand Eritreans at all! It is better if you just keep out of this instead of making a fool our of yourself. When Ethiopian Airlines started its business over 50 years ago, Eritreans were the majority pilots, the mechanics, the managers at different levels, ... it was staffed by Eritreans from the smallest to the responsibilities. Ask the older generations and you will learn. You do not tell Eritreans to work hard! We worked hard even for your Airlines. We love hard work! Hard work is our middle name. Super, super hard work gained us our independence, kept us our sovereignty! Uwa'E!

    ReplyDelete
  43. The truth hurts doesn't it madame meriet. Everything he stated is factual and that's the reason you did not refute any of his points right. Poor Eritrean Airlines doesn't even have a website where customers can book tickets and find additional info. This is unheard of in modern day aviation industry.

What is your evidence facts laying behind the ups and downs of the national carrier. Go on and list the supposedly numerous antagonisms & conspiracies the airline had to bear since its so called beginning twenty years ago. Are you talking about the sanctions of the Somalia Eritrea Monitoring Group that were voted for by the UNSC in 2009, years (or if we take your timeline almost 20 years) after Eritrean Airlines began operations. There were sanctions and conspiracies against the flag carrier of Eritrea, but they were coming from the paranoid dictator in Asmara.

To ato Yohannes, I applaud you for telling the truth about the flop called Eritrean Airlines. If only there were more Eritreans like you that would be realistic about the state of their country, Eritrea would be in a better place. I remember when Ethiopian Airlines (the most profitable in Africa, with a fast expanding fleet and more than 80 international destinations) was called Ebola Airlines by this pathetic site. I understand that this site supports the regime in Asmara, but to stoop so low especially when your own Airline is all but bankrupt. Bytheway did you know that South Sudan has signed an agreement with Ethiopian to set up a flag carrier for that country. Ethiopian already has two subsidiaries (Asky in Togo and Malawian Airlines), that both have a bigger fleet than Eritrean Airlines. I’m sure that South Sudan Airways will become successful now that Ethiopian will provide technical and administrative assistance and that they will outperform Eritrean Airlines very soon. But then again, that is not a difficult task these days is it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I see a nostalgia in you. It is ok.You can still ask for Ethiopian citizenship. Do you seriously consider Eritrea as a country?

    ReplyDelete
  45. I can't believe any true eritrean would advocate agains his own country no matter what, what you saying wouldn't make sense by any measure . So you need to worry about your ethiopian self, Ya all please stop talking about South Sudan , they can't even hold their unity for two years after independence , let alone they gonna be a great success in the airlines business. I wish them the very best but with all the oil resource they have and what they perform for the last couple of years , good luck. No Eritrean will worry about any other country but our own. We know Eritrea is on a good hand no place for puppet and no place for handouts. Self reliance . I pray for the rest of Africa to have a president like PIA. Eat your hear out.

    Viva Eritrea

  46. I don't think so, you are talking more than you have. that is why I suggest to work in hard. Don't be fool we Ethiopian are over 80 nations and nationalities you can think the diversity is better than any thing. If you count Eritrean nations and nationalities all of them are also live in Ethiopia except Eritrean Arabs.
Therefore Eritrean didn't establish Ethiopian Airlines over 80 nations and nationalities of Ethiopian established our profitable and leading Airlines.
    Good day

Ouch lol, my goodness Berhane don't be too hard on these zombies. These fools live in their own world. Eritrean Airlines is a white elephant project just like Massawa Airport remember that one. Ethiopia is not just expanding in aviation industry. Perhaps the most important transport infrastructure to see huge expansion is the railway industry. At the end of this decade Ethiopia will have 5.000 KM or 3.000 Miles of railway network. Shaebia will have exactly 0 miles of railroads. That is of course unless you count the steam locomotive. Lol. Eritrea has no highway infrastructure projects, no railway infrastructure projects, no aviation projects, and of course no power projects. They are going downhill and they know it. Eritrean Airlines is a perfect example of that.

  49. Hidrom - the sanctions are restricted to purchase and importation of military hardware and the freezing of assets of Issayas and his goons. Nothing else. The sactions were not designed to impact the unfortunate masses of Eritrea economically. You are still allowed to run your mines, trade in human organs and illicit your 2% tax from your diaspora. The sactions are VERY effective. Your military has been reduced to an effective organization that is losing personnel to sharks in the seas, to organ traders in the Sudan and Egypt and to refugee camps in Ethiopia. Your Air Force is no longer flying. Your air defense systems no longer work. The sactions are not "toothless dog" as you put it. They have been very effective. That is why they're being renewed every year, like a gym membership. If they were so "toothless", your diplomats will not be scurring around world forums "meowing" to anyone who'd listen about the "unjust" sactions. Your fake posturing is not working... it's like trying to sell ice to eskimos. No one will buy it. Wake up! Smell the bitter poison Issayas has concocted for you and which he will force each and every one of you to drink.

  50. Ras Alula, keep repeating the falsehoods to make yourself feel good. But you need to be challenged.

You say: "The sanctions were not designed to impact the unfortunate masses of Eritrea economically".
That's a big lie. Of course they were. It is very obvious that they were hoping for popular uprising, but failed. Look at history how sanctions were used to bring about "regime change". Denying truth says more about your intentions.

You say: "You are still allowed to run your mines, trade in human organs and illicit your 2% tax from your diaspora".

Yes we are running our mines and doing a great job. Your accusations about organ trade and "illicit" 2% are fabrications and propaganda. Typical woyane.

If the Air Force is not functional why are your friends obsessed to have access to "evaluate"? Why make accusations then. Because the sanctions did not work as they intended and Eritrea has done a very good job at surviving, but now is ready for economic takeoff.

Your name sake Ras Alula, was a murderer of many and he did an immense damage to the relationship between us Eritreans and you Tegarus to this day.
You are continuing in his legacy with you fabrications and propaganda. Try to rise above that.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Arlight... you say the sactions are targeting the economy. Tell me... exactly what the sactions say. List for me exactly what the sactions have targeted. Give me virbatum what you read on what exactly the sactions target and also provide a citation to your source. Furthermore, the moment anyone opposes you, you automatically assume the person is Tigrayan. That has been your (Eritreans) mistake from the beginning. You think you're just fighting Tigray, you think you are just insulting Tigrayans. Be mindful that what you say and do Tigrayans you are also saying and doing to the rest of Ethiopians. Yes, there are 86 distinct ethnic groups that make up Ethiopia and no that is not a weakness but a huge strength as you had witnessed how all of Ethiopia rose against you when you set foot in Badme. Remember this.... if you don't remember anything else. YES, OUR VOICES ARE MANY, BUT WE ROAR AS ONE. ALWAYS!

  54. Forto (I won't demean myself to name calling..) I'm not trying to fool anyone. I'm only asking for facts to back up statements made. No one can fool the one that is already a fool. The well being of Ethiopia's distinct ethnic groups are not your concern. You're an outsider, a foreigner to Ethiopia. Worry about your other 8 distinct ethnic groups that are under your Issayas and his trignigya tribe. The well being of Ethiopia is not your responsibility. We now have the burden of hosting over 110,000 of your people as refugees. You should be thanking us for what we're doing and not insulting us. For if the shoe were on the other foot, you would not be kind to Ethiopians who come seeking your shelter.
