Ethiopian Airlines’ Sales Hit by Ebola Fears

Ethiopian Airlines is losing $8 million in sales per month over Ebola fears

Ethiopian Airlines’ Sales Hit by Ebola Fears

By Robert Wall

ANTWERP, Belgium—Ethiopian Airlines is losing around $8 million a month in sales as travelers cut back on African trips as concern about the Ebola outbreak in West Africa affects far-afield airlines, the carrier’s chief executive said.

“The Ebola scare has caused weakness in demand,” Tewolde Gebremariam said in an interview Thursday. Ethiopian Airlines has been hit even though the airline’s main hub in Addis Ababa is several hours flight time from the Ebola-affected region in West Africa.

Flights across much of the continent have been affected by the regional outbreak, Mr. Gebremariam said. “This is a major concern for African airlines,” he said.

The World Health Organization said more than 5,000 people have died from Ebola. Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone are the countries most affected.

The carrier has tried to cut back on capacity to help mitigate the effect, he said on the sidelines of the CAPA World Aviation Summit.

Ethiopian should still deliver a full-year profit for the financial year ended in June, though the extent of the final impact from Ebola on the bottom line is too early to assess, he said. Concern over regional instability in countries such as Mali and Nigeria also has hit demand, Mr. Gebremariam said.

Despite the difficult market conditions, Mr. Gebremariam said long-term growth plans aren't being curbed. The airline still expects to take delivery of eight aircraft in the first half of 2015, including three Boeing Co. 787-8 Dreamliners and three 737 single-aisle jets, as well as two of the manufacturer’s 777-300ER long-range jets. “”We believe Ebola will be contained in a few months,” Mr. Gebremariam said.

Ethiopian Airlines expects to have a fleet of 150 or more jetliners by around 2025, double today’s number, Mr. Gebremariam said. As part of the growth plan the airline is considering buying Boeing 777X jets, the newest model of the large twin-engine widebody, with a commitment possible next year, he said.

The airline also is considering buying the 787-9, a larger version of the Dreamliner that Boeing started delivering this year. The carrier will likely also exercise an option for two more Airbus Group NV A350-900s on top of the 12 already ordered, Mr. Gebremariam said.

Separately, Ethiopian Airlines has struck an agreement with the government of South Sudan to establish a new carrier for the three-year-old country. The government will own 51% with Ethiopian Airlines controlling 49%, Mr. Gebremariam said.

  2. yes Ethiopian Airlines is the leading and profitable air line in Africa, that is why we establish air Malawi in southern Africa with 49% share and Togo Asky Airline in west Africa with 49%. So we are very proud in our flagship air line to establish another south Sudan air line with share. Therefore Africans air lines will follow our airline move.

  6. How can we Eritreans and you Ethiopians own it together when we were not together, from the begining, anyways? Wasn't the UN and the US illegally federated and then abolished the federation, respectively, for geopolitical reasons? True, you have drained our weatlth and moved our factories inland by dismantling our country. In that sense, you're right you owe us a lot of wealth, big time!
Eritrea & Ethiopia are two different countries. Swallow the bitter pill!

  8. This airline is profitable 1) Ethiopian airlines employees are like slave. They are not paid like an airline employee. The salary of kenyan airways is 10 times more than Ethiopia airline employee. 2) The airline is subsidize by Ethiopian government. Every Ethiopian haileslssi derg and weyanie government subsidizes the airline, because of fear that the people would revolt if the airlines bankrupts.

Any way this airline is the one responsible for spreading Ebola to america and the west. It would be remembered as an Ebola airline who spread Ebola from west Africa to other parts of the world.

  9. Truth is truth, Ethiopian Airlines is one of the best in the world and such short tern problems will not hinder it from flying all over the skies of our world!!!
In business lossing and making monies are the two things that existed and will exist.
The Airline is built on rocks not on sands like teh Eritrean Airlines.

  10. Let we think rationally . It is true many Eritreans played big part in shaping Ethiopian Airlines to be the best in Africa, unfortunately the narrow minded Tplf and the greedy and mafia style of government of higdef inverted hate rate in two brothers people. The success of one should be the pride of all not the fall of one . Imagine , if we have visionaries leaders in both countries how better could be for the economy and relation of two countries. Love and respect can take us to prosperity and peace.

  11. THE Ethiopian government has been consistently denying reports of any confirmed or suspected cases of Ebola in the country.

However, a leaked top secret letter from the health bureau of the Benishangul Gumuz Regional State in the Western part of Ethiopia exposes how the government tried to conceal the outbreak from the public and the media.

The letter that was dated and signed by the Chief of the regional health bureau Mr. Ayele Jirata on October 4th, 2007 Ethiopian Calendar (or 14th October 2014) was addressed to the Assosa Referral Hospital.

Mr. Jirata, in his letter, acknowledges that a team of health professionals that was tasked for Ebola infection preparedness and response have confirmed existence of three cases of Ebola in the region and the patients already admitted to the regional referral hospital.

Mr. Jirata, however, strictly informed the hospital administration to conceal and contain the outbreak by carefully execute, burn and bury the infected individuals.

He said the regional office lacks resource and treatment center to deal with such a deadly infectious disease – Ebola.

  12. simerrrrrrrrrrrr2012... you said love and respect can take us to prosperity. I agree with this. But how do you think Eritreans can live with Ethiopians in peace, prosperity and love when the woyane junta has occupied, Eritrean land. Occupation is an act of war. Do not blame the victim. If Ethiopia leaves Eritrean soverign land we can work together next day. Eritrean government and people accommodated peaceful living between the two countries, but the woyanes, hell bent to destroy Eritrea, declared war on us. Ethiopians always declared war on Eritrea. Occupying a country by force, dismantling the federation arrangement even though it was not the choice of Eritreans was the first act of war declared by Haileselassie. Then Derg continue3d it with brutality. Then woyanes then came with another war aggression, after even it seemed Eritreans try top forget the damages and massacres by the previouse eth. governments, and started to establish neighbourly norm to coexist in peace. Eritreans have done no single harm to any Ethiopian at any point of our lives. Not even harmed a single person of Ethiopia. The Ethiopians have commited repeated aggression, massacres of villagers and dwellers of towns and cities. Ethiopian crimes are numerouse and that does not invite for love. Do you love someone who is continually killing your family and members of your family. I wish if you could show us how.

  13. How about Eritrean Airlines sales? Oops I forgot, Eritrean Airlines is barely functioning and has less than a handful (wet) leased planes. If anyone is interested how Eritrean Airlines got into its current coma like state, you should listen to the radio interviews that Kibrom Dafla gave that are available on Youtube. He is the former CEO of Eritrean Airlines and has explained in detail how the dictator in Asmara was micromanaging (and thus mismanaging) every aspect of the flag carrier.

This project was initially led by captain Asres Araya, but he too left Eritrea after he got tired of the president frustrating the work of the board of Eritrean Airlines. The nations flag carrier had everything going for it to be a successfull airliner similar to Ethiopian, Kenya Airways etc. Eritrea has a big diaspora of whom a significant portion visit the country regularly. It has a long beautiful coastline, it is only 8 flying hours away from the tourist markets of western Europe, it is close to big airport hubs like Dubai, Istanbul Ataturk, Cairo etc. It had all the ingredients of becoming a successful airliner. However presidential incompetence and mismanagement led it to its current state. Ethiopian airlines was called Ebola Airlines by this site. My question is if that is the case, then what should Eritrean Airlines be called? Perhaps Greyhound Airlines, or Eritrean Bus Lines? Her wings are gone, and we can thank our dear president for that.

  14. If Shaebia sabotage it when was this? in the 1960 or 1970's? That was the time when Eritrean land, trees, rocks, humans and animals were burned indiscriminately by Ethiopian Haileselassie. Remember what would you do when pregnant women's womb was torn with Sanaja . This was to kill a child before he was born in order to destroy a country. This was the sort of Ethnic cleanzing. That was when the inhabiatants of Akoradat, Hirgigoo, and the many lands and villages throughout Eritrea were being burned down to ashes. Animals were not spared, they were slaughtered eaten by Ethiopian army until they had enough meat to feast and the rest left to die. Their owners already killed or flee their habitat. That was the whole lowlands inhabitants were driven out from their homes throughout the lowland of Eritrea. I was the witness. Eritreans villages were the target for the Ethiopian army. time and that was just to get at that time hijacking a plane was just call for attention for the cause. oh you must be naïve. Why was not for you to be fair. How many times did the Ethiopians hijacked Ethiopian airlines. The last been the one to Switzerland about 3-4 years ago. Remember the one that crushed in Indian ocean. This is recent ones. Ethiopians have probably hijacked the airlines on 5-7 times only .
Hijacking a plane just to get the attention was a norm as that time. But massacring thousands, torching their house, gassing people, using chemical and napalm gasses on civilians and animals, the worst and worst acts of crimes by Ethiopia is much gross crime. All Eritrean property, wealth was removed from Eritrea , Factories, were dismantled and transferred to Ethiopia. ( read Micheala wrong book as a proof) Who sabotaged who? you get the answere. if THE ETHIOPIANS DO NOT ACCEPT FOR THE DAMAGES THEY CAUSED TO ERITREAN ECONOMY AND THE LIVELIHOODS OF THE PEOPLE, IF THEY DO NOPT APOLOGISE FOR THE MASSACRES TO CIVILIANS AND THE EXTREME CRIMES THEY COMMITED AGAINST THE PEACELOVING ERITREANS, THERE ALWAYS WILL NOT BE TRUST. tHE CRIMES ARE COMMITED , HISTORY IS THE OWNER, BUT AS SIGN OF REGRET ETHIOPIANS SHOULD ACCEPT THEIR GRUESOME, CRUEL CRIMES AGAINST THE Eritrean PEOPLE APOLOGISE.
You cannot accuse Shaebia for sabotage when all this crimes were committed by Ethiopia successive governments. If you think positive, it is good to not blame the victim .

  15. why do you compare yourself with Eritrea. Eritrea is just 23 years old. it is younger than you. what have you achieved in your life . a country that came from ashes ( due to Ethiopian aggression and wars) never should be compared to Ethiopia a country you claim was 3000 years old as a government. Eritrean airlines tried to create one. We do not have airlines, we are trying to establish one.
Ethiopia should compare itself with Britian, America and many others. Not with Eritrea.
After independnence we used the service of Ethiopian airlines, That was normal. It is good Airlines, but I did not get it to be the same as virgin airlaines, Candan Air. I did not find it like British
Airways. or Royal Dutch. I did not find it as we;;l like Quatar airways.
But Eritreans do not have problem with your airline being good. I am happy there is service available to people. I wish all airlines in the west can travel to Africa and have big competition. so whay to bother about Ethiopian airlines being good or best. It is abusiness service to give me to travel. But the woyanes did not want Eritreans to Travel on their airlines. they stopped the cancelled the bilateral agreements without notice. Cancelling bilateral agreements without notice, abandoning port usage without notice, abandoning all agreements reached without even giving the second chance and now you blame Eritreans for anything that has had happened as the hastey decisions taken by woyanes.
It does not matter wether your airline is the first or the best. Just solve your problems and l;ive in peace within yourselves . Stop blaming Eritrea for all your failures. I do not have any problem for Ethiopia to be rich, first class . tHE PROBLEM IS STOP MAKING PROBLEMS TO OTHERS.

  16. Ayda, how old are you? Probably you are an adult with a three old child mentality. 23 years are more than enough to establish an airliner. The problem is we don't have a constitutional government that rules by the law. We have the best people in the world who can run an airlines in a constructive and business way. The problem is not because Eritrea is 23 years old, the problem is that we are being ruled by a mafia group. Got it baby!!!

  22. Don't worry about their expansion plans, perhaps we should worry about Eritrean Airlines' expansion plans. Last time I checked there was a (wet) lease of a two decade old airbus from Ukraine that was celebrated here as if Eri Airlines was being named African Airlines of the year. Never mind the fact that the airline can not even fly to its lucrative European market. Never mind the fact that not one, but TWO airline directors have defected (Kibrom and captain Asress). Never mind the fact that the Eritrean flag carrier does not even have a website. Can you imagine a national flag carrier without even a website?
There is no good news regarding Eritrean Airlines, it is indicative of the horrible managing of the Eritrean economy. There were many professionals capable of making Eritrean Airlines into a profitable, expanding airline. But with a government structure where one man decides all, you won't get that far.

We value our precious soldiers, people and property. We are not like you, for you a war is a profitable business as it was always been and a system to decimate thousands of poor peasants as it happened in 1998-2000.

Ethiopian people especially the poor peasants
have always been victims of their own leaders, leaders who prefer to kill them by any means,
the Eritrean people/Shaebia are the only side that would like to help and sympathize.

  28. You said it all. Before any thing we should expose the crimes committed on innocent people. why is no book is written on the atrocities committed on our people by Ethiopians?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm not bitter. Why should I? Am just stating the facts. First Ethiopian airline is not business company like other airlines of the world. Other airlines through out the world operate like any business company. they operate by simple methods of profit and loss. Ethiopian airlines is not business company. It is government institution subsidized by successive Ethiopian governments to keep their regime and fame alive.
Second even if the governemnt spends huge amount of money on the airline, its performance is not satsifactory. Look at how other airlines such as Emirates, Qatar, altahid airlines perform. They are only ten years old, but look where they are now. Ethiopian airlines is 70+ years old and is no where to compete those Arabian airlines let alone other western airlines. Most employees of ethiopian airlines are migrating to those arab airlines cause Ethiopian airline is inferior comparing to those Arab airlines. The dream of every Ethiopian airline employee isto work for Emirates, suadi arabian, alitahd or qatar airways. Thus there is nothing to brag about Ethiopian airline. All it did was borrow huge money from western countries and spend it buying new airplanes.
It is believed Ethiopian airlines is spreading Ebola to other parts of the world. Because it is the only airline that flies to Ebola carrying nations of west africa. Many healthy airlines have stopped flying in fear of Ebola

  31. Here I disagree with you. Yes 23 years old, but had the govt used all the skilled man power Eritrea could have an airline that shines out others. Thousands of Eritreans who used to work as management, pilots, technicians, and sales people were deported by Ethiopia. Did the government try to make use of those professionals? I do not think so. Even now the government should wake up and use those professionals before those get old and useless. Eritrea is located in very strategic place and should have been center of aviation and maritime by now. It should develop its human capital if it wants to compete the dynamic world. Eritrea should start establishing aviation school that teach technicians, marketing, sales people, and pilots using those professionals. It can even get better income by training foreigners such as other africans and arabs. The same should be done on establishing strong shiping lines and training school. Thus we are only 23 years old can not be an ansewr. 23 years = quarter a century. Much could have done. Eritrea needs visionary leaders who want to set better future.

  53. I never said a successful flag carrier is indicative of being a wealthy country. Nor did I ever state it as being the main priority of a nation. You are using excuses to explain why the Eritrean Airlines project has been an abysmal failure. Just because it is not a priority does not mean the president should micromanage the airline into its demise. Kibrom Dafla has explained his tenure at Eritrean Airlines in the greatest detail. He talked about his conversations with the dictator for life. With Hagos Kisha, with many others. In addition to that he gave detailed briefings about his time at the ministry of Trade and Industry, at Himbol Finance, and at the Red Sea Trading Corporation. This is a man that has seen all aspects of Eritrea's economy (with the exception of the mining sector) up close. He defected after realizing that he could not lead the airline without constant interference of the president. I suggest you listen to his interview. It will give you far more insight into the history of Eritrean Airlines than this site (Ebola Airlines lol) ever will.

23 years is more than enough for a single company to start and grow like what Emirates and others did. However, no healthy government would put building an airline as a priority before building other mandatory infrastructure and human intellect for that matter. Go read about the achievements in MDGs and most importantly in building a solid foundation for the development impetus soon to come.

  57. 'Ethiopian Airlines sales hit by Ebola'

'Eritrean Airlines sales not affected since it's hardly flying anywhere'

Bytheway The South Sudanese are not the first to seek a partnership with Ethiopian Airlines in establishing a flag carrier. Malawi (Malawian Airlines) and Togo (ASKY Airlines) both are partly owned by Ethiopian Airlines and have a bigger fleet then Eritrean Airlines. I guess that explains the hatred that this site has for Ethiopian Airlines. Let alone the carrier itself, but even its subsidiaries outperform Eritrean Airlines. The attempt by the Eritrean government to start an airline company has been a total and complete flop. Perhaps its time that this site would pay some attention to that.

  60. This kind of argument is out of its time. We have moved on we are a country. A whole country to ourselves, a whole destiny to chart for ourselves independent of Ethiopia!

Ethiopians should move on! You seem to be saying that Eritreans didn't suffer more than Ethiopians did. Well, suffering is suffering and in that sense it is true. However, suffering for 50 plus years and intense suffering through out the country (I am talking about Eritrea) is different. You have no idea about it. How could you know? You Ethiopians have no idea of the sufferings of Eritreans at the hands of Ethiopian ruling class because you live far away from the action!

If what you want to say is, "We all suffered and therefore, the independence of Eritrea is not legitimate" then the answer is: It is not up to you to decide that! Since when has it become that legitimacy is proportional to the degree of suffering? Move on man, we are already in the second round of fighting, this time against you people to retain our sovereignty!

Moreover, the problems that are directed to us from you Ethiopians arise from the same false history you have been told by your ruling classes and your "intellectuals." Whatever your understanding we have made our decision; first by the blood of our martyrs and then through a referendum.

  68. I'm not PIA, how could I be? Yes, PIA is a person but a special one, he is one of those men who appear in the world once in a millennium for extraordinary missions.

His 1st mission was to unite the Eritrean fighters then the people. His 2nd mission was to empirically teach the Ethiopians about justice and the concept of peaceful co-existence. His 3rd mission....next time.

Shaebia is not a political club and the Eritrean people are not a property belonging to somebody.
Shaebia is the embodiment of the Eritrea people, a unique one, a dynamic entity that guarantees the independence, sovereignty
    and development of Eritrea.
Shaebia, was, it is and it will always be.
    Accept it or just vanish!

  70. You seem to totally misunderstand the real meaning of positive-thinking.
The above is a normal description of a delusional sort of people who are hell-bent to destabilize the unity and harmony of a nation to serve only the malicious interests of our enemies.

    Lesson No. 13:
A cat does not and neither is it expected to think-positive while being menaced/threatened by a venomous hissing cobra.
