99.9% of Eritreans who leave their country are economic migrants: Western Diplomats in Asmara

A report from the Danish Immigration Service’s fact finding missions to Ethiopia and Eritrea reveals that 99.9% of Eritreans who leave their country do so for economic reasons.

The Danish mission points to the large Eritrean Diaspora coupled with the preferential treatment of Eritrean asylum applicants in the West as major pull factors that cause young Eritreans to leave their country.

Moreover, unnamed Western embassy officials and a UN agency in the country informed the mission that "hardly anyone leaves Eritrea for political reasons."

The report also states "There are no mass violations of human rights in Eritrea", and compared the human rights situation and poverty levels in the country as being "no worse than in most other African countries".

The following excerpt was taking from page 41 of their report:

Diaspora

According to a Western embassy (B), approximately 50% of all extended families in Eritrea have a family member living abroad. Going abroad has been a tradition since at least World War II. Thus, a well established network between the Diaspora and families in Eritrea has been in operation since then. The two percent income tax levied on members of the Diaspora is considered a ‘rehabilitation tax’ by the government intended to help financing the rebuilding of the country. It should be remembered that other countries charge their citizen fees for issuance documents such as passports as well.

Emigration patterns

Since 2013 there has been an increase in the numbers of Eritreans leaving Eritrea. The major cause for this is the so-called Mare Nostrum, i.e. the Italian navy’s operations where asylum seekers are being picked up in the Mediterranean Sea and transported to Italy safely. Thus, it has become much easier and safer for asylum seekers to cross the Mediterranean and get to Italy, many of whom are Eritrean nationals. The biggest risk to their lives is the way through Ethiopia, Sudan and Libya. In addition to that close to 100% of all Eritreans are granted asylum in Europe.

According to a Western embassy (B), 99.9% of all Eritrean asylum seekers in Europe are economic refugees. The extended families, which may comprise 50 persons, merge their savings in order for them to send a bright young relative, usually a man, to Europe. It is an investment and it is expected that the young man will send remittances back to his family in Eritrea. As long as the family knows that he will be granted asylum, they will not hesitate to send him off. But if the outcome was not given, the family would think twice before they send the young man to Europe. It was emphasized that the human rights situation in Eritrea is no worse than in most other African countries and poverty in Eritrea is not worse than in other African countries. There are no mass violations of human rights in Eritrea, and European countries do not grant protection to everyone from Guinea, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic or Egypt. In this respect, it could be argued that the Eritrean government has a point when it states that Eritrean asylum applicants received preferential treatment in Europe.

Commenting on Norway’s recent policy towards Eritrean asylum seekers, the Western embassy (B) stated that the Norwegian announcement of a possible return agreement with Eritrea had a huge psychological effect and it effectively drove down the number of Eritrean asylum seekers in Norway. That happened despite the fact that no one has been deported from Norway and despite the fact that though Eritrea accepts voluntary returns, especially when the returnees are given some money, it does not accept forced returns. It was added that Eritrea will not give assurances regarding human rights and it will not allow European countries to monitor unsuccessful asylum seekers who have been returned to Eritrea.

  1. Ofcourse Denmark as a very racist country have an interest in labelling them as economic migrants, in order to deny them asylum. Don't tell me pilots, former CEO, national football teams, minsters, famous singers, ambassadors, doctors .......are economic migrants. Even with African standard it is not normally all those proffesionals leaving their country.
BTW even economic migration is a failure of the governments economic policies!!!!!!!

  4. How convenient!
Now that you have the whole Young population from the CONTINENT of Eritrea on your door steps, suddenly you decided to find out some truth. And why did you decide not to tell the whole truth? Keeping the 0.01% refugees as political? Is that for keeping the sanctions? Shame on you African leaders for allowing yourself to European & USA abuse.

If there is anyone who deserves to leave Eritrea because of abuse, that is, too much work for too long with Little appreciation, it is H.E. Isaias Afeworki.

  5. The swiss start the strict control on the immigration on 2013 when they saw an infinite list of people coming from all over the world with the pretext being Eritrean.. they get the game immediately when their country being invaded..now is turn other nations as well to unveil the fact..And most of all understand that africans will continue to fill all the west until peace will be gained in africa, and the west will help africans to restore truly peace and not fueling anger among nations & peoples.

  6. It would be better if the youth can stay at home and fight back the mafia regim. When the youth realise that fleeing is not a solution that is when tangible change will happen. The days of Tegaru mafia rule in Asmara is coming to its end.

  7. This is just a trash. Who is the Western diplomat? What is the relationship between this diplomat and the mafia group in Eritrea? He could be a paid mercenary who enjoys the suffering of our people.

The main cause of our youth exodus is simple and that is the indefinite slavery by the mafia group and that constitutes political asylum.

  9. Weather you call it economic, political or anything else, that does not change the basic fact on the ground. The fact is a leader who can not
embrace his people or can give a hope (perspective) for the young people
of a society is a failed!!! leader. It is as simple as that, President Isaias and PFDJ must go now or wait until the wave of change eradicates him.

  10. Who can live in a nation that is deliberately kept in a permanent state of emergency so that the people can not entertain their Human Right, Legal and Democratic Rights ? Who can live in a country where people are detained indefinitely without any reason whatsoever ? Who can live in a nation where young people have absolutely no chance for a normal life: where young people can work, earn decent compensation and raise their families ? Who can live in a country where there is a permanent fear of war, deliberately kept pending by the ruling regime ? Why had not the Fact Finding Mission members try to critisize the regime, while they were in Eritrea, and saw what he would have done to them ?

It would have been more convincing if those so called Fact Finders state that they have economic problem of their own, and that they can not prioritize the problem of Asylum Seeker to their own problems.

  11. The root cause is Ethiopia's no war no peace policy coupled with the USA policy that encourages Eritreans to emigrate. There is hope for Eritrea, because not all Eritreans are selfish. Our enemies will be defeated.

His people are not traitors! There is a reason why he cannot embrace you! You can demand your hope from the Weyane, your masters. That is a "hope" that will never realize, a "wave" that will never move!

It sad, if you are to be an Eritrean "Benedict Arnold". By the way, your assignment is to read the history of Benedict Arnold by googling his name in the internet,

  30. The Eritrean government and the Eritrean people knew all along what the USA and its puppet minority Woyane regime in Ethiopia were up to when they were offering refugee status to young Eritreans who were willing to demonize the Eritrean government on paper. In fact, it is reported over 50% of the so-called Eritreans that were whisked to the USA from UN refugee camps in Ethiopia were actually Ethiopians (Tigrayans) of the Tribe of the minority Woyane.

Everybody knew that this offering refugee status to Eritreans was a big joke and everybody rose to take advantage of it. Undocumented Ethiopians (Oromos, Amharas, Tigrayans) in the USA suddenly became Eritreans that left Eritrea because of the "oppressive" policies of the one party government of Eritrea -- and received resident permits and even brought relatives posing as Eritreans, mind you. It was a big joke.

But as all good things do also come to an end, it appears the West is now admitting that the CIA driven charade of vilifying and demonizing the Isayas government has actually boomeranged and ended up solidifying the independence of the Eritrean land by exporting new and young Eritreans to replace the aging Eritrean Diaspora that played a very important part in the Eritrean struggle for independence.
