Eritrean Airlines wet-leasing a Ukrainian A320

By chi-aviation,

Eritrean Airlines (B8, Asmara) has wet-leased an A320-200 from Ukrainian ACMI specialist, YanAir (YE, Kiev Zhulyany). According to Skyliner Aviation, UR-CME (cn 671) was ferried from Kiev Zhulyany to Asmara on September 30 where it has now joined a B737-300, on wet-lease from East Air (EG, Dushanbe), and an in-house B767-200(ER).

  1. Give it three to six months and it will disappear from the skies of Eritrea. We have seen such airliners come and go. That happens when a country is ruled by one mad dog man.

  2. Poor Eritrea!!! In 23 years, we are still unable to own a single plane!!! What a wasted 23 years!!! This leadership of PFDJ lives by lies, blames and defamations for its inability to lead.

Unlike many countries over 60+ years still living in handouts. I would like to know what kind of progress you made in your life mr ciber hero. We own one single plane or not is not your problem. But we are seb mestenkr

  5. B.Adal,
It is not fair to compare Oranges to Beles, as woyane had the advantage of ruling Ethiopia with some 3000 years long of progressive history. You know what 3000 years mean? It is a 1000 years before the birth of Jesus!

  6. It is more profitable to lease than to buy an aerplane for commercial reason . Have a bussiness oriented mind brother. Do not compare an aviation industry of Ethiopia with Eritrea. Because Ethiopia avation industry is almost 70 yrs old. God bless Eritrea.

  7. So what's your point, Tesfu. Just because of the previous mishaps or diffiulties do you expect the govt to simply give up and throw in the towel? Didn't your mother or father ever advise you that if you get a "D" grade on a given subject to work harder to improve your score? Besides, although important the govt has higher priorities that have immediate impacts on the people's livelihood: improved health, free education, agriculture, provision of clean water-something every genuine Eritrean should take great pride. As for your prediction on the future of the Airline, regardless of what the future holds, the people and govt won't stop and as always will strive to make it work. And one (minus you) can only hope they succeed.

  8. The fact that a lease of a single airplane by the barely functioning
Eritrean Airlines is celebrated as a huge step forward shows how out of
touch some people here are with reality. Eritrean Airlines started (or
restarted) operations more than a decade ago (Queen Bee).
After the first senior official Captain Asres went back to the US after about two years, Kibrom Dafla (a man who served many years in various financial
departments of Eritrean government institutions (Ministry of Trade and
Industry, Himbol Finance, Red Sea Trading Corporation etc.)) took over.
He has explained in great detail (listen to his interviews on youtube) how
Eritrean Airlines was micromanaged (and thus mismanaged) by the
Presidents Office. The most revealing part to me was when the President
demanded Eritrean Airlines make Massawa their main hub instead of Asmara International Airport. This is just indicative of the mindset of that
man and Kibrom Dafla rightfully tried to convince the president that the
board of the airlines should be left into making that decision.

After trying very hard for more than four years of making Eritrean Airlines a
successful enterprise and trying to convince the president of stopping
his interference into the day to day affairs of the airlines, the CEO
became disillusioned and realized that Eritrea under the leadership of
Isaias would not be one where a CEO of the national airlines could run
that company free from daily interference into their affairs. After
serving Eritrea and the EPLF for more than three decades he defected in
2009 and he now resides in The Netherlands. The airline meanwhile was
run by the Pakistani Shakil Aftab Kashmirwala (who has since left).

Eritrean Airlines is a textbook example of the mismanagement of the nation. No transparency, no accountability, no annual report that is published and,
from a marketing viewpoint perhaps the worst, no website. In the last
decade it has operated it never had a functioning website where people
could book tickets and receive flight information. Eritrean Airlines
could have been a modest success story by now. The fact that a backward
and war torn country like Yemen has a national airline (with a website
mind you) with a fleet of around 10 airplanes, and more importantly
flies to Asmara weekly, shows that there was plenty of room for Eritrean
Airlines to succeed. Ten years later however, Eritrean Airlines barely
has a functioning fleet and more importantly, it has been blacklisted
from flying to the lucrative market of Europe.
A country with a coastline of more than a 1000 KM and only 8 hours away from Europe has everything it needs to be a tourist magnet and as a result have a reasonably large airline. The case of Eritrean Airlines however shows that government (mis)handling at the end of the day is what is the most defining factor.

  9. I think it is good progress for Eritrea Airline b/c you have 2 planes now but you should learn from other air line like Ethiopian Airline the fastest growing and Africa leading airline.

  10. Poor Ambesa, do you really know how many nights are in a span of 23 years? how delusional you are! The guy above is talking about 23 wasted years and yet you have the audacity to comment by saying "only stupid believe, expect, fantasize everything comes over one night". Get life brother. Over the same years the brave woyanes have quadrupled the number of Ethiopian passenger and cargo planes and yet they came to power at the same time when your useless goons came to the grip of eritrean destiny. One of them is building their country while the other is destroying it exponentially.

  12. Eritrea has been claiming to be on its way to fulfill the MDG goals quite ahead of time. But when people wonder how come, the secret is by downsizing its population. The majority of Eritreans have been fleeing their country in droves left and right, and the government is tacitly encouraging illegal migration of the eritrean people at every opportunity. When the number of newly wed young eritrans is hitting bottom rock one can't expect the procreation to happen and therefore only few children are born every year. By so doing, eritrea had the audacity to claim only recently that it has already met the MDG goals in child mortality rate when the rate of child-birth has dwindled drastically. I am sure Eritea will be the only country to find a way around of meeting the MDGs-by pushing its people away and putting the future of the country at risk.

  13. What about these ? Are these refugees a waste of overpopulated Ethiopia, who otherwise used to get dumped at Eritrean war field for their final graves? Ethiopia (specifically tgray)cant feed itself. If not for leftovers we would witness them singing another round of WE ARE THE WORLD as yesteryears across the atlantic and worldwide too. Remember Raya ? But in modern "Democratic" Ethiopia the nationals been exchanged by chinese, indians...to spread themselves, proudly calling themselves Eritreans:)

Hoping that you will not be disillusioned by my response, I would like to enlighten you with the facts on the ground as follows. Leave alone UN and CIA even DIA doesn't know the size of the eritrean population...he doesn't even bother to know all about it. Otherwise can you please tell us when the first time and the last time public census was conducted in eritrea over the past 24 years so that we might be able to look at the references thereof? By the way which public census data did the UN and the CIA used as reference in giving account of their pseudo statistics or it purely based on speculation? Please don't ignore my questions...and try to say something in return.

    Politely yours!

  29. -Lufthansa at one point offered to help develop Eritrean Airlines however our president rejected their proposal.
-Mercees Benz wanted to build an assembly line in Eritrea but our president rejected their proposal.
-The European Union offers 100million grant (not a loan) every 5yrs to developing countries and our president basically told them we were developed and did not need their money (even though that decision was later reversed).
-The U.S. in 2005 offered to give Eritrea aid in any sector of its economy and to put pressure on the Ethiopian regime to implement the final and binding boundary decision in exchange for the release of two Eritreans who worked for the U.S. embassy being released from prison. They wanted to make sure they were still alive, and this was confirmed. The U.S. then began to put pressure on Ethiopia to enforce the boundary decision (which gave them a real scare), showing that they were going to fulfill their end of the deal. However our president responded by throwing the prisoners back in jail and closing all ngo and foreign aid offices in eritrea. This marks the beginning of the end of our relationship with the U.S.
-I recommend reading Andebrhan Welde Giorgis (a member of the EPLF central committee who left his phd studies at harvard to join the armed struggle and also served in various capacities in the Eritrean Government) book Eritrea at a Crossroads. He does a good job telling the history of Eritrea (even some of the ancient stuff) and exposing the president's true nature through his actions and conversations he had with the president while also discussing all of the opportunities that passed Eritrea by because of its poor leadership. My conclusion after reading it is that our president is trying to destroy our country, there really is no other explanation for some of his actions and some of the things he has allegedly said while drinking (like "I will bring this country down the same way I brought it up").

  30. You sound so immature ., As any TRUE Eritrean parent or Elder will tell
you in the outside world my son/daughter there is NOTHING for free.
Isaias along with our many tegadaly learned this the hard way., like the
Russians (for there interest) that helped us one day and switch to
mengistu the next. We see the same behavior in the west., one minute
Obama is telling Egypt ppl to settle down they are acting irresponsible,
and the next minute when they see the ppl will not be stopped they turn
on there puppet mubarak at a moments notice telling him to step down.
Thats the past tho. I know the current Eri gov., tends to want partners
who are willing to work side by side and make an investment in eritrean
ppl., and i bet like many ngo's etc and Mercedes they want to bring
there OWN ppl., not teach the "Africans' ANYTHING., there by
contributing nothing to Eritrean society. Then again if Eritreans learn
to build there own car's lol., whats the use of a title like mercedes
right? But you saying they offered this they offered that? for free?
    grant you say?

I really hope you are below the age of at least 25
to be liberal., that you have such a "simple" thinking pattern. Ppl
like you God forbid come to ANY power (if you are Eritrean that is) will
be our undoing. Christ, how can one be so simple.

His mention of benz and beemer may appeal to a teenagers fads and trends but not to a seasoned and farsighted principled leadership and vision.

We are not aspiring to be a source of cheap labour or a trained monkey at the asseblyline.
