Eritreans Introduced Modernization to Ethiopia

By Barnabas Araya Yohannes,

Eritrea is so illuminated by Italian architectures raised in Asmara, Keren, Mendefera, Massawa, Asab, etc. with endless chain of beautiful homes in which masculine strength of outward form is always balanced by feminine grace and delicacy of interior ornaments.

In these sprawling villas-some with 25 rooms- all comforts and elegances were gathered: mosaic floors, columned halls, landscape murals, chandeliers, sculptures in marble and bronze, great fireplaces and baths, gardens and tennis courts, and environing woods in which ladies and gentlemen might hunt with all the glamour of falconry.

They brought not only magnificent marbles and bronze doors, but their craftsmen also adorned the interiors of their homes with mosaics, enamels, and artistry in metal, ivory, and wood.

Perhaps, out of all the Italian works, the most advanced and complex work was the 2400 m. Massawa-Asmara Cableway (La Teleferica) for transporting goods and services to and from the port to the capital. It was built in 1938/39.

The greater number Italian merchants and craftsmen became powerful corporations; they dealt in a variety of goods, purchased raw materials wholesale, organized the food supply and sewage disposals of the towns, paved streets, built highways, roads, bridges, tunnels, utilities, and docks, deepened harbors, policed highways, supervised markets, regulated wages, hours, conditions of labor, terms of apprenticeship, methods of production and sale, prices of materials and wares.

They brought their own minted currency, ordered and supervised public works, organized the food supply, forbade forestalling, engrossing, or leveling prices, brought seller and buyer into direct contact at markets and fairs, examined weights and measures, inspected commodities, punished adulteration of products, controlled exports and imports, stored grain for lean years, provided grain at fair prices in emergencies, and regulated the prices of essential foods, wine, and beer.

We must not forget, when the Italians were building and operating all these infrastructures, the Eritreans were working as paid laborers. Thus, through their engineers and craftsmen, Eritreans learned architecture, woodwork, metalwork, mechanical, textile and electrical skills. By the time the Italians left Eritrea (1947), the Eritreans were the most experienced and most skilled people in Africa. Once the Eritreans learned these skills, they went to Ethiopia and opened the eyes of the Ethiopians towards modernization.

Before, the Ethiopians were building their homes with water and mud. Then the Eritreans taught them building homes with bricks, marbles, and stones. Even their kings were walking barefoot and wearing only jalabiya (a long shirt); and some of their tribes were still naked. It was the Eritreans that built their cities, opened their first garage shops, adorned their women with fashionable sweaters, skirts, exquisite shoes, and their men with appealing pants and stylish shirts by opening the first tailoring, the first boutiques, the first shoe shops, and the first sweater factories.

Until the Eritreans came to Ethiopia, even their capital city Addis Ababa did not have a sewer system, let alone other cities. The Eritreans not only beautified the city, they were also the first to open and operate many car and truck servicing companies. Eritreans were among the richest owners of agricultural, mechanical, technical, and electrical turfs.

Ethiopia owes that vibrant awakening which caused and resulted in the flowering of Ethiopia’s new beginning towards modernization. However, unfortunately, Eritrea’s contribution to the modernization of Ethiopia is unappreciated.

  1. This history reminds me of Emma Sihela (the mother of my friend). Let her rest in peace! There were and are patriotic and reasonable nations. She was one of them. She even told me that she came with a passport. She promised to show me but I didn't see it. She was a very beautiful woman, very huge no body imagines she could run bare foot to warmly welcome 'tegadalti'. It is good to bring this issue for discussion but but one is evaluated with what he is and has now. I don't see those days intelligence, patience and farsightedness replicated these days.

  3. Those who don't learn from history are condemned to repeat it. When Ethiopian gov ethnically cleansed people of eri origin from Ethiopia during 1998-2000 war, it failed to realize it was destroying the life of those who played a very crucial role in modernization of Ethiopia. Some of those deported were the most patriotic Ethiopians, even though they also supported eri struggle for freedom and liberty. They probably saw success of eri will help ethio in long run due to peace dividend and political reform.

  4. Eritreans are talking the nonses stories. So why they are now at the tail of backwardness.at poverity.immigration, unemployment,no development but degradation of economy ,suffering, instablity, begging at all corners of the world!
If they are at this much capacity why not now show the world their capacity. It is not possible!
Because western proverb says a man who has nothing bosts and talks to much than who has!

  5. We, Eritreans, should lead with our intelligence and help Ethiopians to see the light. We should tell them that we have always respected them, eventhough they been acting irresponsible and ugly upon us. We should teach them how tolerable we are when it comes to peaceful resolution. We are not easy to forget by very used to forgive. We should show them the way to act humanly and elegantly. We are both there to live side by side and not necessarily need to eat eachother or make our priority to comfort outsiders before ourselves. Lets help Ethiopians open their greed and evil eyes and learn from reality.Lets also give a chance for Ethiopians to solve their insider difference by themselves, so that they let us solve our difference by ourselves too. Let us bring all our refugees back home and lets sit together to solve our problems. No more pain, lets learn from our past. As no African solve European problems, we Africans shouldn't depend on Europeans to solve our problems too. Lets live side by side PEACEFULLY.

  7. The article is talking about the past. It is a very important East African history lesson. Bro, did you learn anything? I hope so. Coming to the present, the current eri economic and political situation is very bad. Why is that? Most of the blame goes to the current eri gov. Eri gov failed to properly manage the economic and political situation in Eri. Nevertheless, ethio gov had significantly contributed to the current eri problems. First, it had stolen billions of dollar, from 1998-2000, from businesses and other wealth owned by people of eri origin living in ethio. Second, it fired thousands of eri folks from high skilled and well paying jobs and gave it to tigreans. Third, by secretly changing the Ethiopian currency the birr, it made the billions of dollar owned by eri gov and people worthless over night. Lastly, since eri still faces existential threat from Ethiopia, it is forced understandably to spend a large sum of its income on weapons and military related activities at the expense of other economic activities.

  8. BaRNABAS, WHAT KIND OF BOIOKS HAVE YOU BEEN READING LATELY? THOSE ON THE PICTURE ARE ALL ITALIANS. By the way, in 1928 there was no such thing as Eritrea or eritreans. At that time the contemporary Eritrea was part and parcel of Ethiopia. In 1928 eritreans has no right to study further that 4th grade. How is it possible for a 4th grader to be a pilot. |Stop writing mumbo jumbo and use your talent( if you have one) to teach eritreans that we are in essense ethiopians.

  14. kkkkkkkkkkkkk Madote this is hilarious. Eritreans taught Ethiopia? Ethiopia is home to ancient civilization.Eritreans were not even a country in 1928 and were embracing their slavery while licking the feet of their italian master. Eritreans always try to take credit for everything. You think asmara is Eritrean designed? It isnt called little italy for nothing, it was built for italians by italians. Look at Ethiopia and eritrea now. Ethiopia is hitting amazing development it all of its regions. Addis is projected to be a power house of africa and a leader in the world. Tigray it self has hit more development then all of asmara. Asmara is the same since the italians left and is falling apart. The rest of the regions are neglected that are not close proximity to asmara. This article, wedi afrom and and the eritrean mentality is a sheer joke. Instead of living an imaginary past try living in the realities of the present

More than two million Ethiopians are outside the country begging for their survival, so you have nothing to be proud of, you not different zezem.

  17. Less than 4 percent of the country has left Ethiopia, whether as refugee or as a visa holder to whatever country they go to. Many of whom are expected to come back to Ethiopia after jobs continue to grow. Ertirea as of March 2013 had over 15% of its population flee its country. It can be estimated that this will rise to 25% in the next five years. That is 1/4 of your country population. That is equivalent to the tigre people of eritrea just standing up and deciding to leave Eritrea. This is more sad and despicable.

  18. THIS PHOTO IS HILARIOUS! Eritreans are flying planes not to defend Eritrea. They are flying planes to attack Ethiopia in the name of Italy, as they are sworn officers! YOU GUYS LOVE YOUR MASTER! You attack your own to appease your italian master. This article, photo, and all comments below illustrate everything wrong with eritreans and eritrea. The other day, an eritrean told me Eritrea was civilized because they eat with fork. I told him then never eat injera then since its ethiopian. Kitfo-gurage, wat-ahmara/tigray, boon-oromo. You claim everything is eritrean, when infact you just take ethiopian culture and claim your own because without Italy, eritrea has no identitiy. Now you guys are just lost in the desert bouncing from camp to camp, to stubborn to fix your problems

  19. The present is an under developed camel paradise, with a leader who hasnt accomplished anything since independence. Tigray doesnt need to be in Eritrea, because Eritrea has nothing. Eritrea today looks like tigray 50 years ago. And eritreans are the true leaches. Using ethiopian electicity to power the country while also stating that you need nothing. You guys live a lie to yourselves

  20. There is no question about the hardworking and intelligence of the Eritrean people then and now. The question is what's is hindering us from utilizing our intelligence and hardworking habit inside our country now? Why are our youngsters leaving our country?

The answer is just in order to stay in power, the mafia group called PFDJ, is chasing, arresting and killing our able people and ultimately killed the whole nation.
I know an Eritrean donkey would agree with what I said. However, the supporters (supporters by dancing, clapping and not paying 2 percent) of the lawless leadership would say otherwise. They may even assign me an Ethiopian citizenship.

  23. It is so heartbreaking to see how colonialism deprived their identity. Eritreans with Northern Ethiopians have thousand years of civilization history. Before italy came to existece they were one of the world power conquering the horn and south Arabians. Now the writer is telling us, the two countries were backwards and then Italians came, first they thought the Eritreans and then the Eritreans in turn thought civilization to Ethiopians. That is very low even in shaboo cadre's Standard.
The self hate and the the white master's worship is just too much.

  25. Zemzem, you are extremely ignorant.
    1. Ethiopia lost skilled /educated people of eri origin. Do you value skilled human power? Who builds nations, invents new technology, writes enlightening books, come up with solution to humanity problems such as diseases, etc. The answer is you guessed it, Skilled/educated manpower. The smart and prosperous nations such as USA have thousands of VISA reserved you guessed it to skilled/ educated humans on planet earth be it from Africa or Europe. Ethiopia's loss USA gain. Most deported eri folks were accepted with an open arms by USA and are doing very well and their adapted country has benefited.
    2. Due to very distractive war imposed by ethio gov on eri, the life of thousands of law abiding and successful tigreans working in eri was disrupted and destroyed. Because of safety reason, they had to leave a country they loved and a successful career and/or business. Where are they now? Do you care about them? May not. You strike as a very selfish, narrow minded and immoral individual.
    3. Regarding 10% growth yearly, that is a pipe dream. It is due to manipulation of data by dictatorship ethio gov in order to get western and/or china foreign aid. The gov lives on aid, stolen and borrowed money, period. First stole money/land from eri folks, then amhara followed by oromo, afar, Somali, gambella, etc etc etc, it never ends. Oh by the way, Ethiopia is the only country on earth that enriches itself by exporting, mind/body/soul alerting/damaging drug call KHAT to neighboring countries. What a lovely neighbor to have. Lastly, most business owned by gov or affiliated individuals. Very minimal private enterprise.

  28. Dude, your name is cool and original. I believe you misunderstood the author. When Italy started to come to our neck of the wood around 1880's, about a decade after unification of Italy after centuries of division and foreign invasion, they saw a divided region in a constant state of war. They used divide and rule technique in order to acquire present day eri which at the time was governed by its own governor. At that time Ethiopia did not exist. But Abyssinia, comprising present day tigrea and amhara, led by king yohannes existed.
Governor of amhara region, menelik, was aspiring to take power from king yohannes. King yohannes has an aspiration to control present day eri. Unfortunately, Italy also wanted to take over eri hence a conflict with yohannes. Menelik conspired with Italy in order to take power from yohannes. Menelik got weapons from Italy to be used against yohannes. Italy got a promise and support from menelik on its plan to colonize eri. The rest is history.
Your are right the region comprising present day eri, tigrea and north amhara was world power and highly civilized for almost 1000 years, from around 500bc to 500ad because of unity under the leadership of auximite kings. After the collapse of auximte empire, because of lack of unity and constant war the level of civilization, development, technology and innovation degenerated significantly. Therefore when Italy colonized eri it brought superior technology, such as road building, bridge/house construction, electricity generation, a way of managing business and gov. For their own interest they educated eri folks about list skills. The wise and shrewd king of Ethiopia haile selassie harnessed Eritreans skill by providing them an attractive term to emigrate to Ethiopia early on and later by forcefully dismantling eri industries and transferring them to addis.

3.The percentage of our growth is none of your business and mind only about yours by warshiping you dictator.
Finally, when we come to the article you guys think you was the only people who was civilized people than the rest of Ethiopia that introduced modernization to Ethiopia is nothing but laughable because if you think being a Banda of Italy for sixty years makes you proud and left you with out identity is ok, you shabians are nothing but the animal of the World.

  34. "1. We kicked your ass from Ethiopia because there are Ethiopians who was waiting for jobs that was given to them."
Well, you confirmed what's been said by the author, ethiopians were not in a position to compete with Eritreans.so you had to kick them out to occupy their wealth and positions.

  35. You guys you don't know history and politics. 1st Eritreans were given a land in Shashemene because they fought bravely. After some were deported after a while it was stopped! Your government is ignorant and only think by his being upper hand he makes a lot of mistakes which will never be corrected. 2nd started to deport UN staff and this was stopped after a while.
3rd. In the news paper I read a title 'Eritrawewe teshome' I know this person. He had brought a lot of income to Ethiopia and was very dedicated worker. His name was written in your newspaper with a false father's name. In the end he was laid off and deported.

4th ERi govt promoted Hamasenune .... and replaced ....but little knowledge is dangerous both of them are from the same region.

5th. When they were looking to replace their people: Your govt. representative went to an office and said 'yehe yega aydelem' because the dept head was from Eritrea. Immediately they laid him off.

6th. Let me add you my experience in 'sedet'.
We were practicing in a language class with an Ethiopian young girl. She started boasting about Ethiopians. She is very young. She definitely be my daughter. That time I was so frustrated. I acted very badly which I regreted later. The other day I tried to explain to her the real history. I was brought up in Ethiopian and I know the in and out. I didn't expect young Ethiopians are not fed false history.
So brother and sisters this is not at all a dialogue I feel just we are back to 0. No development comes unless we learn from our mistake and tried to narrow the gap between us and try to work together. By denying the facts we only bury our hatred and boiled now and then. Let us boldly admit our mistakes. I really wonder when I read we kicked you ass.. After that what did you do? You sold one Eritrean house to 20 people until the gov't couldn't find the proper and legal documents? How many Eritreans are back to Ethiopia to get return their houses, properties? Isn't the highly officials send out some of them 'bemasferart. Please please let us be sensible!

You have taken a "No peace no war" situation like blessing, because you feel threatened and afraid of Eritrean intelligence to share the love and respected we had all the time before woyane existence. Deep inside all Ethiopians know that an Eritrean is honest, hardworking and confident by nature. That is the reason you want to keep us away of Ethiopians for you to belittle, kill, deprive them from their ancestors land and do whatever you feel with nobody to stand beside Ethiopians. I feel sorry for some egoist oromos who clap for woyane while the people of Ethiopia is deprived from their land. Woyane is ugly by nature, Sad indeed.

  39. 1. Thousands of Ethiopians of eri origin were deported. If Ethiopia is for Ethiopians, how do you reconcile the fact of deporting Ethiopian to a land they never knew and the language they don't speak. Don't be a hypocrite. If Ethiopia is for Ethiopians it should be for all Ethiopians not just for Ethiopians of trigrai origin.
    2. How did you know if the deported people of eri origin were supporters and/or spies of shabia regime? What is your prove? What is your evidence? Remember in any civilized world, which Ethiopia is not a member of since it a barbaric and lawless country, you are innocent until proven guilty. Did any of the deported got a chance to defend themselves in court? Were they given a chance to hire a lawyer? The answer to all my questions are a big NO.
THE FACT IS MOST OF THE DEPORTED HAD MONEY, WEALTH, GOOD JOBS AND BUSINESS, SO SOME OF THE BARBARIC, LAWLESS, JEALOUS, SELFISH AND GREEDY TIGREANS WANTED TO LOOT, PLANDER AND GET RICH FAST AND TAKE THINGS THAT DID NOT EARN AND BELONG TO THEM AT THE EXPENSE OF HARD WORKING, LAW ABIDING AND PEACEFUL PEOPLE. PERIOD.
    3. Regarding some of my comments being that of a typical shabia, I don't know which comments you are talking about. Please be more specific. Also, think and use facts before you say/write anything. I am not a shabia supporter. I am not only anti the current ethiopian regime, but also against the current eri regime for a different reason. I don't take side with anybody or group for its own sake. I take the path of truth and righteousness. In other wards if people of tigria origin were oppressed/abused by eri regime or anyone else, it will passionately join them on their fight for justice and assist them in anyway I can. PERIOD.

  40. 1. Your are admitting in front of all the million folks in world wide web, internet, that you, with the help of your decadent/immoral/sadistic government, stole the job some family's bread winner and in the process placed the family, especially the kids, at high risk for suicide, psychological and economic damage. I DARE YOU TO GENERATE A SINGLE EVIDENCE, SUCH AS COURT DOCUMENTS, RECORDED ADMISSION, ETC, THAT PROVES WITHOUT A DOUBT THAT A DEPORTEE WAS SPYING FOR ERI GOV.
    2. Ethiopia declared war on ERI. PERIOD. IF YOU DECLARED WAR YOU STARTED THE WAR. THIS IS A VERY COMMON SENSE AND A TEENAGE IS ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT. Prior to the declaration of war their were border skirmishes, as the border between the two countries were not demarcated and each side was claiming a given peace of land is theirs. The solution was sitting down and hammering out a win win border demarcation which would have resulted in peace and cooperation between the two countries. However, the egotistic ethio gov wanted to teach eri gov a lesson for disrespecting them and some in ethio military leadership saw the billions of dollar loot from rich eri people in ethio that may result from the war in addition to taking all eri ports or even taking over the whole eri.
    3. The percentage of growth is a farce and joke. It is due to manipulating economic data. The ethio gov generates all the economic data, Foreign aid is directly proportional to progress as reflected in economic growth. Therefore ethio gov has tremendous incentive to make a false and extremely inflated growth numbers.
Moreover, the gov in involved in a lot of illegal activities. Such as making close to a billion dollar exporting mind/soul/body damaging illegal drug called KHAT to neighboring countries, stealing fertile lands from southern people such as GAMBELA and selling it to foreign investors, selling teenage girls to muslim countries, etc etc. The list of illegal activities is too long to list.
    4. It is undisputed fact that people of eri origin played a much more crucial role than any other ethnic group in present day Ethiopia in modernization of Ethiopia. That is a historical fact.
    5. Regarding eri folks being foot soldiers for Italian colonizers, it was wrong and it represents a dark history of eri. I believe it was wrong to fight their brother/sister in Ethiopia for the sake of Italy. But, we should never forget those we left eri and Italian army to join the Ethiopian side such as zerai derus who is not only eri/ethio hero but an African hero.

  42. Let me add to your points. The Ethiopian gov't rather Weyane was calculated to make Eritrea down from the beginning. Before the war broke Eritreans 'gerehe lebu' were trying to do business and were having agreement for many projects. The officials of Ethiopia go back and immediately write or call and tell to our gov't they have stopped the project. This has happened not only once but several times. After that they start replicating in Mekele or else. I remember once my Ethiopian boss heard him saying we should do this and that before the Eritreans dump their product. Is this a good attitude for development?

  47. Terry car, when these clowns say "Before, the Ethiopians were building their homes with water and mud", it shows how ignorant they are of the splendid ethiopian history. They think the prehistoric Obelisks, and monolithic stales in Axum, the rock hewed churches in Lalibela and the castles and palaces in Gondar were all made with water and mud.Or do they think these historic landmarks in ethiopia were built by their masters - the Turkish, The Arabs or their recent masters the Italians?
Wonders never cease in this land of clowns who are proud of their colonial history under the italians, who used them as canon fodders in all the wars they launched in Libya, somalia, ethiopia and others.

  49. I think you have some truth when you say "nobody learns in their mother womb", the problem is your trend of inconsistency there, ...you seem to approve it as a positive move when the Eritreans copy or learn it from their masters:- the italians, while demonizing the Tigrians when they do the same by adding a qualification "..they pretend as if it is theirs". By the way who did the Tigreans copy from ,the architecture they used in building the Obelisks and monolithic stales they erected more than 2 thousand years ago?? Don't you know eritreans know no shame when they brag and boast as "all able" people, i hope you know what "Yikallllllooooooo.....kulu Dikalooooooooo" means while they can't even survive by themselves. Look at the number of eritrean refugees all over the world from a very tiny country.

Let me give you one example what some of your people did to one of the Eritrean during deportation. They went straight to his store and looted all the property there. Who gave the information? You were ready to do this before hand because the list of Eritreans were given by our Tigryans neighbors to your officials for this purpose. This was told in every meeting held for you guys only. You tried every bits to change the name begger and to give it to Eritreans. If we are refugee now the reason is well known. Y people close your house and come to Eritrea or else to literally beg. This is y whether y like it or not. I could have brought 101 reasons but does this help to both of us? You mentioned Yekalo. Didn't the Eritreans tegadelti put you on the throne? Y mentioned 'oblelisks' where Tigray at that time? This will take us no where except being ridiculed by others. I heard Tamagne interview today and he brought many evidences how the situation were before and what is going now. I mean it Suliman it is no of use!!!!! Your revenge and hatred bring no solution to our poverty. Try to see things 360 degree.

  51. Hei,

I am so happy that I have a chance to give some ideas sometimes rather 'qoika' which I don't want to do it. I follow hard talks and discussion among the newspaper heads in BBC. I envy the level they are. Most of the time we come up with the wrong conclusion or else unnecessary reasoning out. This is my last discussion. It takes me nowhere as long as I learn nothing from the discussion. There is no emotional intelligence among us including me.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity at least to give you my view.
    Best regards

  52. I knew you are Amiche. No wonder why you are so ignorant on the real Eritrea.
You have fictitious Eritrea in your mind. The real one is a nightmare to its children.

  53. I am not 'Amche'! I was born in Eritrea but brought up in Ethiopia. Kene seme lenegerehe 'Aineseba' yesowocha ayne malet newe because I was the only one born in Asmara, Eritrea. All my friends knew very well that I advocate to Eritrea before Eritrea got independence. It is not because I am blind or have a fictitious Eritrea but the real one. Don't try to turn back into 0. Everything has gone out of your hand. Eritreans were not either respected or not treated well. Yedele atbeya arebega endatelege enji salebarere beselamu geze newe wede agere yegebahut. In the end I would like to assure you if you think very positively we can work beyond our country to the extent of our Africa and to the world as a whole. No need to nag or look down each other. To eradicate poverty we should work together.

  54. Sorry Saba, I must have misunderstood your view.
It is in Ethiopia's best interest to see peaceful and prosperous Eritrea, Somalia,Sudan,Kenya...
You can not create an Island of peace and prosperity without your immediate neighbors.
"a concept from Ethiopian foreign policy".

    ReplyDelete
  55. Which Ethiopian policy? The new one? I am sorry Abe. After everything is rotten? Are you kidding to keep the best interest of Ethiopia? What about the interest of the others neighboring countries? If you are advocating about Ethiopia only, y r fooling yrself. 'Kebaleshe bale yebeltale shiro abederegne weyneme lerase sikorsu ayasanesu endemibalewe endayasemeselbehe. I was listening to an Ethiopian 'activist'. He said don't call me 'activist'. His name is Tamagne. I remember he was 'astewawaki' in National Theater of Ethiopia. I don't know what his position was in the Dereg Regime but those days there were up and downs between supporters of the regime and anti. Both were playing a great role but many innocent have died for nothing. Smart one are hiding themselves now rather are activist or rich now or some leaving everything behind might be living happily or not happily. According to his analysis he has brought evidences which he believes supports his stand. Politics is a dirty game my dear. Why should you try to convince me. I have never been a politician and I don't want to be a politician. I want to advocate for true love, respect, understanding, tolerance and patience. Money and power are stirring people. By virtue of being an Eritrean I faced or else experience severe situations. It makes me cry or depressed when youngsters of the different eras died very untimely. I still remember of my days. Young citizens of both Ethiopia and Eritrea. They died for nothing. Now a days we and the Tigryans could have not reached this stage. We could have been a good example to other Ethiopians. In my age there was an insult or nagging attitude of ones origin. That has brought a very wide gap in the past but should have been narrowed now and we work for development. I don't see it. I feel so bad!! When and how do we learn? War brings leads to poverty, revenge by revenge results to hatred if hatred continues war never stops, trying to own others sweat is unfair. Let me end up by bringing a story which my relative's wife (she is an Ethiopian married to an Eritrean) told me. It was in Assab. Origin of Eritreans fled their country of fear. Those Ethiopians who own their property claimed that they were sent empty handed to their country. You know what this Ethiopian said 'keyet yametashe weyeme yamethewe ezhu kuche belen aydelem nebretachewene eyaseferarachu yewesedache whut alekuachewe alechegne. History repeat itself! If you are pretending to be wereja now. We know each other are the answer.

  56. You forgott to mention those gallant Eris who died to safeguard Ethiopia's interest in Ugaden. Their blood spilled in no vain and their children been deported to Eritrea by woyane eventhough they never know where Eritrea was. Now the most successful businessmen and women are our PRIDE amiches. Thanks God they are back to Eritrea and we thank woyane for his ignorance lol

  57. Sleman, you spoke my mind, thank you!

  58. Saba, no Ethiopian, including Tigrayans, with his/her right mind accept the deportation. It was wrong. It was wrong though Shaibia has been engaged in similar atrocities in smaller groups since long ago (since 1991). But alligning yourself with the likes of Tamagne to settle old scores is not the way out. I tell you. Regarding the current situation Ethiopia/Tigray, u better ask some out of the hundreds of thousands of Eritrean refugees (not beggars) in Tigray. They are more credible a witness that the racist hate monger Tamagn-who hates Tigreans and Eritreans alike!!

  59. KKK... what a joking Eritrea thought Ethiopians about modernization. Funny, I think Eritreans have got identity crisis.
    God bless Ethiopia

  60. Saba,
I think you jump to writing your diatribe without reading or trying to understand what I wrote to you.I suggest you read it gain. I stand for Ethiopian interest and Ethiopian interest does not antagonize with its immediate neighbors interest. It is clear.

Did You say you listen to Tamagne ? and you believe the cut and paste nonsense.Do you people have a very short memory .I thought you were complaining of ill treatment during the DERG?and now you start worshiping it's die hard tentacles? Saba you need to do some serous soul searching before you decide to respond to me.

  61. Nonsense,
Eritreans are no better than any people in Africa.
Eritreans modernizing Ethiopia my ass. Why wouldn't Eritreans modernize Eritrea in the past 23 years???????????????????????
    Empty pride.

    ReplyDelete
  62. And how many Ethiopians where deported with humility empty handed from Eritrea?
Do you care ? I bet not.

    ReplyDelete
  63. What is diatribe? I don't know the meaning. Yes what surprises me is you only stand for Ethiopian interest? If there is no peace in you neighborhood you can't sleep well. That is what I want to tell you.

Oh Abe why I should I worship him? What I wanted to tell you was situations are not improved. When one region goes and another comes immediately dissatisfaction of people follow and tried to appreciate the past. That is what I want to mention. My worry is why do people try to revenge and broaden the gap instead of trying to minimize the difference. Don't we have to try to eradicate poverty?

  68. So what should we do? It is so frustrating! Their lies have created a lot of fear among both nations and has created even suspicion particularly on us. Ata Lebamat abeyeti yelwune do? At one time individuals who were dedicated and very progressive became against and the interview they gave another time is totally different. For example it was a long time ago I remember one of the Derg minister's interview was totally different from the one he gave before he left the country. I heard exactly the same interview by the high official of Tigryan recently and also Seye Abraha and Asrat Gebru were humiliated in a meeting. For that matter it has happened also the same in our case. When does this 'cherechere' stop?
While I am writing this response I was listening to Ban Ki- Moon speech. Abet how easy is when y said it verbally. The suffering is unbearable!!!

Prior to the Italian invasion Etiopia was medioeval feudal country, before the Italians built the infrastructures , the first fascist amendment was to abolish slavery. Eritreans were smart they understood Mussolini's new lifestyle was better than being a slave of a medioeval savage negus.

The popular Fascist Era song: Facetta Nera (Little Black Face) was about the Italians coming into Ethiopia(Abyssinia) and abolishing slavery and freeing a little black girl to become a good fascist. In Sallassie's Ethiopia, slavery was still legal
