Ethiopian Regime Kills at least 47 people in Ambo

A resident of Ambo told the BBC she witnessed the Ethiopian army firing live ammunition towards unarmed demonstrators which resulted in the deaths of 47 people.

"I saw more than 20 bodies on the streets," she said.

"I am hiding in my house because I am scared."

The protesters came together to oppose the “Integrated Urban Development” Master Plan of Addis Ababa, a plan protesters say is intended at taking lands from Oromos near Addis Ababa and giving them to party loyalists.

The violent crackdown comes a week after the federal police reportedly killed 8-12 unarmed civilians in the Afar state after the locals demonstrated against the regime's human rights abuses.

Ambo is a key town for the Ethiopian military. According to the former US ambassador to Ethiopia, Donald Yamamoto, North Korea has an advanced military munitions factory in the town that produces rocket propelled grenades (RPGs), BM-21 (truck mounted rocket launchers), and modified AK 47 rifles.

  1. Think Outside the BoxApril 30, 2014 at 10:54 AM

These TPLF thugs have lost their mind. First they arrest nine journalists and bloggers on trumped up terrorism charges, then they kill 12 Afar civilians, now they kill 15 Amhara civilians in Ambo.

The timing of all this violence and repression may have to do with John Kerry's visit. If you ask me, this is an orchestrated state-sponsored drama to milk the United States and the international community for more money to 'stabilize' Ethiopia from its own terrorism.

TPLF is an advanced begging entity.

  3. While Ethiopia seeks military assistance from North Korea, North Korea seeks Egyptian military and construction assistance. Like I was telling the Ethiopians in the South Sudan article, Egypt is decades ahead of Ethiopia and its ally, North Korea.

  4. You got to be kidding? Ethiopians can defeat egypt without any difficulty. I think you need to refer history books. At the end of the day it is te courage that determines thw winner and arabs are not famous for their courage. Egypt beter resolve its case with ethiopia by peaceful means rather than day-dreaming about imposing its will on ethiopia by military means. If it comes to war, I am sure we eritreans will not be on the side of egypt. Even though we have cobflict with the ethiopian regiem, ethiopians remain to be our kins.

  6. I like the Eritrean saying "Ne Adea gedifa ne Hatenea Nafika", as Eritrean why should i care if the Ethiopians are killing each other?. If they choose to do that let them do it, that is their business. There are so many urgent Eritrean issues to discuss but this writer to choose to focus on Ethiopia. What about all Eritreans killed by the regime when trying to leave the country or what about all those who are dying in Sinai or in the sea, isn't that more important to discuss than Ethiopia?. But regime and its supporters are trying to tell us Ethiopia is worst than us hence we are OK. It is like as long as my neighbor is starving, then it is OK if i am starving too, what a shame.

  8. Egypt will remove your dictator in Addis Ababa if you don't halt construction of the dam. No one for a single second will entertain the idea that a backward country like Ethiopia has a fighting chance against Egypt's elite military hardware and training.

  9. Thanks for the vid. To think, this backward government is helping Ethiopia to advance its military. That's a telling sign of how backward Ethiopia's military is.

  23. ETHIOPIA ROCKED BY OROMO STUDENT PROTESTS

    May 1, 2014

Published in Horn of Africa News

(OPride) — At least a dozen protesters have been killed and many others wounded as students in Ethiopia's populous Oromia region clashed with military forces on Wednesday.

Student protests began earlier this month in response to plans by Addis Ababa City Administration which is expected to significantly expand the city's territorial jurisdiction.

Thousands of Oromo students at nine universities in Oromia have rallied in the last ten days opposing the plan, which they say would displace Oromo farmers and undermine their state's constitutionally protected "special interests." Oromo students at Jimma, Haromaya, Ambo, Wollega, Bule Hora, Madawalabu, Metu, Adama and Dire Dawa universities have turned out in droves denouncing the plan. At least 10 students were killed in Ambo while three others were shot dead at Madawalabu University on Wednesday, according to eyewitnesses. Unknown number of wounded protesters were being treated at local hospitals.

The Ethiopian capital falls within the Oromia state, the largest of Ethiopia's nine ethnic-based administrative regions, and also serves as its capital. The country's constitution stipulates the state's special interest in the city — providing for utilization of resources, service provision and joint administration matters. Protesters say the city's latest master plan undermines these interests.......

  46. Eri,

history books would also tell you that EPLF never defeated the Ethiopian people. Derg was hated by Ethiopians as a whole and all regions resisted, not just Eritreans.
However, the people of Ethiopia did come to fight EPLF at Badme and if there is a next time (expect us to come again.)

Furthermore, history books would also tell you that the U.S. played a heavy hand in dismantling Derg after Soviet collapsed and prior to that. The U.S military and its intelligence apparatus, led by Herman Cohen, were running the show worked tirelessly to remove a Communist regime. With this being said, it is hard to say that EPLF/TPLF would have defeated the Derg on its own.
