Eritrea Purchases $100 million Dollars Worth of Machineries

Updated:  The amount Eritrea spent on these machineries has been changed from the initial estimation figure of 12 million to the real figure of 100 million. All sources have been updated.

Dec. 08, 2011 (ASMARA) —  Eritrea has purchased a total of $100 million dollars worth of modern machineries last week, according to state media.

Some of the new machineries recently bought from China include hundreds of excavators, loaders, compact tractors, fire engines, water tenders (tankers), small and large lorries and dozens of other construction and agricultural related equipment.

The machineries are being introduced to assist local construction firms and farmers on various development projects such as real estate housing, irrigation, roads, bridges, water diversion schemes, as well as playing an instrumental role towards enhancing food security and stimulating job growth.

Eritrea's rapid economic growth, coupled with its strong agriculture sector, has accentuated the need for improving infrastructure. For the next four years, the government of Eritrea targets an impressive 7%-10% GDP growth rate and aims to completely modernize Eritrea's agriculture industry.

With the recent commencement of a $80 million dollar Gedem Cement Factory, a new foam factory and a soon-to-be inaugurated Dahlak Brick and Block Factory, Eritrea has laid the foundations to begin a massive development drive that will propel the economy and decrease housing costs.

  3. I'm very pleased to see the purchase of these modern and essential machineries imported to accelerate the on-going development in various economical fields. As predictable, for a reason unknown to me, the amount of money involved in the purchase is quoted to be US$12 Million. This is a distorted figure. A simple check on China SFECO Group (the company in charge of the tender) web site reviles the amount to be US$100 Million. Check the link below...

Shut the hell up, we make a big deal out of it because we bought it with our blood and sweat. Now, why don't you just go and celebrate the usual foreign-aid that's been handed down to you by your masters. In the mean time, we will gladly praise our 'silly trucks and dozers'. Muppet.

  6. It looks like we've a visitor from the land of "sleepless nights". Please forgive him for his ignorance. Because he comes from the land of begging, he has no clue what it feels like to earn once purchasing power. As Eritrean's, it's natural for us to be delightful to see these peaceful progress but our uninvited guest desired us to share his agony and short sightedness. I was tempted to give him a piece of my mind but afraid will fail to heal a crooked soul that is beyond repair.

  7. Details are sketchy. The picture is far from complete than what was presented on TV-ERI. US$100 Million is a very large investment for a country the size of Eri and these modern machineries will help reduce millions of hours of labor intensive work. Also introduce a much modern and hastier way of building the nation infrastructure. My impression is the final shipment is still on the way. To validate my assumption, please check the following links from one of the supplier's web site.

  9. 100 million dollar investment on construction material is a solid investment that will create jobs and grow the economy. I can only imagine Ethiopia's genocidal dictator foaming out the mouth and writing another bogus UN resolution to sanction these machineries on the grounds of it hurting his crippling inferiority complex.
