Banca d'Italia Project Design

A complete structural and architectural assessment has been conducted of Eritrea's Banca d'Italia building by the Lebanese-based Sabbag firm. The idea is to turn this historic building into an exquisite eight suite hotel and refurbish it with luxurious high end amenities. The project is being financed by Qatari Diar and the Government of Eritrea (GoE), whom together have invested on several construction projects along the Eritrean coast and capital with the goal of boosting tourism and modernizing urban centers.

The Banca d'Italia (bank of Italy) building is situated on Massawa's Taulud island and was originally built by the Italians in the 1920s. For decades, it served as the largest bank under the Italian administration and was later renamed to Haile Selassie Bank under Ethiopian occupation. During the liberation war for independence, the building was severely damaged by Soviet and Ethiopian bombardment, leaving the iconic building in ruins.

  5. The pictures look good, but changing bank into a hotel sounds really not so classy. Hotels should be given for people to run them, such a historic building should be used as a museum or make it a bank for the city of Massawa, as it is becoming more populated, more banks are going to be needed.

  6. they should of kept it as a bank. however, considering that the qataris are involved and are financing it, im sure that they will want to see a good return on their investment and tourism/hotels seems to be the decision they want to forward with by the looks of things. the building however looks good. good stuff eritrea !!!

  8. I AGREE WITH THE ONE ABOVE, WHO CARES AS LONG AS IT GENERATES MONEY. AND ACTUALLY IT'S MORE RIGHT THAN WRONG TO MAKE IT A HOTEL, SINCE IT HAS SPECIAL ARCHITECTURAL INTERESTS. SO IT JUST REMAINED BANK, IT WOULDN'T BE AS VISIBLE TO THOSE OF INTEREST (PEOPLE) AND THAT MEANS THAT YOU'RE NOT USING IT'S FULL PONTENTIAL. HERE, THEY CHOSE TO USE IT'S FULL PONTENTIAL AND IT MEANS MONEY AND INSPIRATION FOR THE ERITREAN PEOPLE. THAT'S CALLED WISDOM. THEY CAN BUILD BEAUTIFUL BANKS WHENEVER THEY FEEL LIKE, THEY HAVE DONE IT BEFORE. THEY NEVER DISAPPOINT. THEY KEEP A PRETTY CLEAN ARCHITECTURAL STYLE WHEN BUILDING PUBLIC BUILDINGS WHICH I LOVE.
