Tullow in prospecting mode in Asmara

By AfricanIntelligence

Africa Energy Intelligence understands that Tullow Oil Plc's vice president for Africa, Tim O'Hanlon, recently dropped in on Asmara, capital of Eritrea, to meet with several officials from the energy and mines ministry. O'Hanlon reportedly indicated he was interested in picking up blocks in the country, without specifying which ones.

In the past, several companies displayed an interest in exploring for oil. Indeed, Anadarko Petroleum Corp. drilled three wells in the 1990s.

More recently, Canada's Centric Energy and the Chinese firm Defba Oil Share Co attempted to acquire offshore blocks but failed to reach an agreement with president Issayas Afeworki's government.
